1) Important Notice

Hi,

A bit of a messy situation at the moment, with me moving to a new
flat which hasn't got a phone in yet (and thus no Internet access
for me), combined with me leaving my laptop at home.

The laptop contained some of this week's submissions, so they are
not available to me.

With this in mind I am sending out as much as I can right now.
More will follow on the weekend, including the latest from Phil
Doyle, but I'm afraid we have no preview for the Friday night
game.

The joys of running (and subscribing to) an amateur newsletter!

My apologies, and thanks for your support and understanding.

Kangaroos v. Richmond
Friday, May 04, 2001 - Colonial Stadium 7:40 PM

There are generally three types of Kangaroos supporters.
The pessimist will go into Friday night's game against Richmond
praying the Roos don't get flogged by one of the form sides of
the competition. The optimist will look at the Roos inexperienced
side, and believe enthusiasm can carry the boys to victory.
The realist will be in the Locker Room bar at 6 pm getting too
drunkenly numb to think too much about the game, and will watch
the match with an alcohol-opened mind.

Without Wayne Carey, much will be needed from the Roos other
senior players to overcome the red-hot Tigers. Richmond have
arguably the best midfield depth in the competition with the
likes of Campbell, Chaffey, Knights, Bowden, Daffy, Tivendale and
Duncan Kellaway likely to form a dangerous rotated combination.
An fitness cloud hangs over veteran ruckman Brendon Gale, and his
ability to play on Friday is crucial to his team's chances. A
Gale withdrawal would require Brad Ottens to do the ruckwork,
which robs the Tigers of a dangerous forward option, or would
leave the promising but still green Ray Hall to shoulder the
load.

The Roos may regret dropping Shannon Grant, as their midield will
be fully stretched to overcome the Tigers depth in this area.
Carey is obviously an even bigger loss, but his suspension
provides an opportunity for two players to show their wares -
newcomer Digby Morrell who fills in for the King at centre-half-
forward, and out-of-form ruckman Corey McKernan who may relish
the responsibility of having to be a matchwinner this week.

Richmond's defence may also have a little trouble with the size
of the Kangaroos forward line. Gaspar is the biggest and best of
their defenders, but still appears well and truly undersized for
an opponent of Sav Rocca's stature, so Ben Holland may be called
to defence to mind the ex-Pie, depleting the Richmond forward
line even further.

Matthew Richardson looms as a danger up forward for the Tigers,
capable of taking a double-figure mark tally, or kicking a bag of
six or seven goals. Glenn Archer has been successful on
Richardson in the past, and is likely to get the assignment
again. Richardson's inconsistency may suggest he is in for a poor
game, after kicking six goals last week against the Eagles in
Perth.

The bookmakers will have the Tigers instilled as firm favourites
for this match, but the Roos will be keen to atone for their
disastrous start to the season, and will play to regain some
respect by challenging a likely finalist.

The verdict : Kangaroos by 13 points.

Head to Head : Played 136, Kangaroos 58, Richmond 77, one draw.
Last 10 Matches : Kangaroos 8, Richmond 2.
Current Trend : Kangaroos have won the last 4 encounters.
At Colonial Stadium : Never played.

St Kilda v. Sydney
Saturday, May 05, 2001 - Colonial Stadium 2:10 PM

This is a must win game for both sides but more is at stake for
the Swans.

After starting the season at 3-0, the Swans would hate to slide
to 3-3, which would only increase the claims of déjà vu.

The Saints are 1-4. Their one win came first up so everyone's
expectation were raised, but 4 straight losses since then and
it's the back to the being the old Saints.

The Saints may fire up for Stewart Loewe as it is his 300th game
but that goes nowhere to compensating the Saints for the absence
of dual Brownlow medallist, Robert Harvey.

Lets focus on the Swans. Everyone expected them to lose to
Melbourne, but they came so close to winning and then faded. Now
they are facing 3 straight losses.

It was their defence against Melbourne that let them down. It was
the first time this season that they scored over 100 points and
couldn't defend it. It was the 6 goals to 1 in the second quarter
which really hurt them.

By contrast, the Saints have struggled at both ends of the park
and have only won 8 of their 20 quarters played this year.

But it's hardly panic stations for the Swans. They are still in
the 8 and a win here plus the imminent return of several players
should see them and their supporters calm down.

The Swans have never lost at Colonial and have not lost to St
Kilda since Round 10, 1998.

I tip Sydney by 8 goals.

Fremantle v. Melbourne
Saturday, May 05, 2001 - Subiaco 5:40 PM (7:40 PM AEST)
Both Fremantle and Melbourne had memorable games last week for
vastly differing reasons – Melbourne was challenged by Sydney
late in the match at the G, yet still came through with the
points; Fremantle was truly embarrassed in the last quarter by
Brisbane's amazing 13 goal onslaught.
Mid-fielder Shane Woewodin runs onto the field for the 100th time
for the Demons this week and that, combined with the afterglow of
Russell Robertson's match-winning last quarter performance next
week and David Neitz's goal-kicking display, suggests Melbourne
will simply pick up where it left off.
Without the exciting Jeff Farmer, the Demons will lack a bit of
spark – something the Dockers can offer if the team actually
performs as a consistent unit. Although yet to win a game this
year, Fremantle hasn't been entirely disgraced; indeed has looked
capable in most of its games. He-of-the-permanently-furrowed-
brow, Damien Drum, will take little solace from that and only a
win will stop him reaching for the anti-wrinkle cream or
something more sinister.
Tony Modra, strongly defended by Drum this week, needs to fire
and if he is adequately fed by running players such as Bell, Cook
and McManus, the ex-Crow could put on a show. Koops and Fewster
make their way back to the side; not so lucky was Derek Kickett
who must be itching to get back in the team after an eight-week
suspension. The Dockers lineup is quite familiar to Demons coach,
Neale Daniher, who was assistant to ex-Docker coach Gerard
Neesham, and he will no doubt be wary of the Dockers on their
home turf. But if Melbourne's midfield and rovers (sorry MCC
members, I don't mean the Range or Land kind of Rover) take
charge with ruckman White's help, combined with the tall timbered
Neitz and Schwarz making their presence felt up forward, the
Dockers will be found lacking.
Fremantle is possibly the league's most unpredictable and
frustrating team and it is not out of the bounds of reason to
suggest they could beat Melbourne. However the Green and Purple
(doesn't really have that much of a ring to it, does it?) will
have to put on an awesome display to defeat the Red and the Blue,
a team that is out to prove that its Grand Final appearance was
no aberration.

Port Adelaide v. Western Bulldogs
Saturday, May 05, 2001 - Football Park 7:10 PM (7:40 PM AEST)

Port Adelaide would have to be on their biggest high since making
the finals a couple of years ago. They currently sit 3rd on the
ladder with 4 wins, 1 loss. Meanwhile the Dogs are on a bit of a
low. They have been decimated with injury and suspension this
week and will be forced to make 5 changes. That is unless the
Bulldogs win the appeal on the Curley suspension. It has been a
very inconsistent start for the Dogs who are struggling to string
2 quarters together let alone 4.

The Power will start huge favourites for this game, especially
with the Bulldogs only experienced ruckmen, Darcy, suspended.
Primus is in great form at the moment. His opponent will likely
be Paul Dooley who has only played a few senior games. The Dogs
may also bring in Wiggins, another inexperienced player, to help
out in the ruck.

Unfortunately for the Dogs, Port Adelaide are the highest scoring
side in the competition at the moment. Meanwhile the Bulldogs
defence isn't going too well. There have been some huge scores
kicked against the Dogs this year which is a huge worry
considering the Bulldogs best defender, Croft, is out injured and
it is more than likely Curley will be out too. There is some good
news for Dogs fans with the likely return of Kretiuk from injury.

For the Power, they certainly have their forwards firing. Dew is
the leading goalkicker for the competition with 18 goals. He is
in great form, kicking 6 goals against Geelong last week. Also
last week, Schofield kicked 5 goals and Tredrea, 4. Other players
in form include Cornes, Montgomery, Francou and Primus. Really,
the whole team is playing well and their speed will really worry
the Bulldogs.

In-form players for the Bulldogs inlclude Brown, West, Hudson,
Smith, Robbins and Harrison. Brown and West will need to put in
huge performances in the midfield, with Romero and Dimattina out
injured. Also because the Dogs will want to limit Port's entry
into the forward line and the best way to do that is get first
use of the ball. Hudson will need to continue on from the last 2
weeks where he's kicked 8 and 4 goals. Grant played in defence
last week and didn't have one of his best games. He will be
looking to bounce back.

Well obviously my heart says the Bulldogs will win, while my head
says we can but it will take a huge effort. Considering the form
of both sides and the injury and suspension worries for the Dogs,
the Power should win this game. The Bulldogs showed time and time
again last year that when they had their 'backs to the wall' was
when they performed the best. Well, their backs couldn't more
firmly up against the wall this week. In a very biased prediction
I'm going to tip the Bulldogs. What kind of supporter would I be
if I didn't?!

I predict the Bulldogs to win by 1 point

Next issue.

**********

Collingwood v. Carlton
Sunday, May 06, 2001 - MCG 2:10 PM

I expect that this match will be won across the Centre where both
teams
Have some great players who can carve up an opposition. The
danger for the Pies will be Porter, Ratten, Koutifides and
Camporeale whilst the danger for the Blues will be O'Bree,
Buckley, and Tarrant. Accordingly there will be a lot of tagging
and I think Richardson and Rocca will be used in tandem off the
bench against Porter to try and wear him down and Fraser will be
used down forward.

At this stage I don't think Fraser has the strength to go with
Porter but his height down forward would cause problems for
Carlton's backline. I also believe that Rocca is out of form and
Fraser makes the Pies forward line a lot more dangerous. The
Blues will have a rotation of tags on Buckley and O'Bree and the
Pies will tag Campo, Ratten and Kouta.

I expect that the Blues will again use Manton against the
opposition's strongest forward in Molloy and Massie will get
first crack at Tarrant.
Beaumont on Fraser is a large mismatch and the Pies would be
amiss not to use that avenue. I think that if Beaumont is being
beaten the Blues may be forced to go with Hotton. The Blues are
sadly lacking height and a third key defender, which Molloy
Tarrant and Fraser will expose.

Carlton will be hoping that Plunkett, Ratten, Camporeale, Hulme,
Mansfield, Rice, Doering, Fletcher and Freeborn will provide lots
of opportunities for the Blues forward line. I believe the Pies
will bring back Burns for this game and will start him against
Fevola. Fevola doesn't take a lot of pack marks and seems to get
most of his goals on the fast lead. Burns will be giving away a
few inches but can match Fevola for pace and therefore is a
better match than Prestigiacomo or Wakelin. If Fevola gets on top
of Burns then Clement will go down back.

In order for Carlton to win Whitnall needs to play well. Last
year he lead the league in marks but he is nowhere near that form
this year and a lot of pressure will rest on Kouta, Hotton and
Fevola to kick a bag. Both teams have an abundance of running
players who can chip in with the odd goals but for both teams one
forward stands out for the Pies it is Tarrant and for Carlton it
is Whitnall. Tarrant has had a good season so far whereas
Whitnall has been the opposite and doesn't pose a lot of problems
for the Pies defence. On the other hand Tarrant has been firing
for the Pies and will create problems for the Blues in match ups.
Although Massie may get first chance at Tarrant it wouldn't
surprise if Beaumont also had a chance.

I expect that Steinfort will probably get the job on Kouta on
ball and
Down forward. If Rocca Fraser and Richardson start to create
problems across half forward then Kouta may end up at centre half
back.

At this stage I just feel sorry for the stats and interchange
stewards as this will be a merry-go-round with changes to nearly
every position. A lot will depend upon the weather as the Pies
are certainly more dangerous in the air than the Blues and look a
quick side. The Blues will be hoping for a wet or windy day to
take away the Pies advantage and keep the match a close in
struggle where the Blues have the advantage in under the pack
players.

Mid May in Melbourne and I think the weather will not be kind to
the Pies and Carlton to win by 24 points.

I would expect the teams to line up like this during the game:

Rice Manton Massie
N.Davis Molloy Tarrant
McKay Beaumont Bradley
Holland Fraser Clement
Fletcher Ratten Camporeale
Lockyer Buckley Licuria
Lapppin Whitnall Houlihan
Freeborn Wakelin Lonie
Fevola Koutifides Hotton
Burns Steinfort Prestigiacomo

Porter
Richardson
Hickmott
Betheras
Hulme
O'Bree

Freeborn Mansfield Plunkett Doering
Rocca Dimattina B Johnson Holland

Essendon v. West Coast
Sunday, May 06, 2001 - Colonial Stadium 2:10 PM

Bombers fans, prepare your jackets - chances are you're going to
need them this weekend. Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy
inadvertently began the art of high-octane circular jacket waving
after a stirring win over West Coast a few years ago.

These days 'Sheeds' talks down the incident but fans of each
relevant winning team have made it a traditional ceremonial
whenever these two clubs meet. In some ways this is good,
because pre match anticipation is hardly looming large and a
virtual scrubber rubber status beckons. To be expected is a red
and black sea of jackets and scarves of multiple proportions
partaking in anarchic rotation manoeuvres, perhaps with Sheedy
even doing the mamba, oh and also a footy game prior.

The AFL and Coronial Stadium could have milked the opportunity to
promote this game and the venue. With 80,000 of Melbourne's
punters already preferring The MCG this Sunday and with a free
parade occurring in the city (minutes from Docklands), why not
entice some of the city day trippers plus many others with half
price tickets to this game? You can't buy goodwill, unless of
course you make the footy cheaper.

Regarding footy tipping, last week I mentioned the safe one
acquired most weeks from backing Essendon. This week nothing
much has changed.
You can go for the underdogs from the west and finish either one
tip above or below everyone else for the round, an approach that
would have worked beautifully in Round 3 when The Bombers fell to
Carlton. Or for the less fuller of gut, you can simply play it
safe like the rest of us.

Naturally there are misgivings for anyone assuming Essendon as
absolute certainties to win. After all, it may not require a
team with 'premiership contender' status to knock off Goliath.
According to a walking, talking football encyclopaedia friend of
mine (hey, everybody's got one) West Coast have the edge as far
as history's facts and figures go. Including something about
Essendon's low scores against The Eagles who also have a higher
head to head point average, but that probably includes last
century for crumbs sake!

This week The Eagles are on the cusp of the upper bottom echelon
(top 12), will be playing a well rested premiership opposition on
enemy turf, their Coleman Medallist Cummings is re-injured and if
Ash McIntosh misses again there could be some bags on heads by
the third quarter, or perhaps a few hangings by jacket.

If the difference in respective ladder positions equate to
roughly one goal per position then why not tip The Bombers by a
lazy but safe ten goals. Of course if West Coast win, we're
stuffed.

Essendon by 50-60 points.

Hawthorn v. Adelaide
Sunday, May 06, 2001 - York Park 2:10 PM

York Park Launceston will host this very important game of
football can the juggernaut from Glenferrie oval continue to
explode everything in it's sight or can the battlers from
football park make it three on the trot.

Adelaide did look very impressive beating the kangaroo's last
week but was it a case of beating an opposition on the way down.
I'm not convinced with Adelaide just yet. Can Hawthorn make it 6
on the trot when one has a close look at Hawthorn it's hard to
believe at what they have done so far will the bubble burst, the
fact is they just cannot keep winning somewhere along the way
they will stumble.

Rehn the ex crow now hawk must be loving his new home at
Glenferie oval. The big fella has not gone wrong so far and the
truth is this fella is all class and appears to have a new lease
of life with his new club.

I dont believe Adelaide will be any serious trouble this year to
sides with speed and class but Adelaide has spirit and it will
win a few games but it would be a major upset if it were to
present it's self at this years final's.

Hawthorn are now the team to beat and it's not going to get any
easier for the happy hawkers each week opposition sides will
throw everything at them, there is no greater excitement in
football than the first opposition side to knock of the
undefeated league leaders of the competition.

Im tipping the crows to be the first team this year to bring down
the hawkers a loss to the hawks at this stage of the season will
be no drama although it is worth pointing out it will be an upset
victory and the crows will have a real reason this week to
celebrate.

Crows by 29 points.

4) The Quick Snap

"An Idea From A Man Called Shovel"

Comment from 'The Half Back Flanker' http://www.afltips.com/people/halfbackflanker.html

One thing that football and the Internet have in common is
nicknames. From the usual football nicknames using "o" or "y"
(e.g. Matthew "Richo" Richardson, Matthew "Matty" Primus), to the
more creative Greg "Diesel" Williams, everyone has a moniker.

On the Internet, you do get to choose your nickname, but often it
is something you have already been branded from friends or fellow
teammates.

Every football club has a "Davo" or a "Thommo", but there are
always people that are only ever known by their nickname. In
fact, at most clubs there is usually someone with such a
distinctive nickname that many members do not even know the real
name of the person.

An e-mail message hit my inbox this week from a man called
"Shovel". Who knows what mischievous act or idiosyncrasy caused
him to be known as this? Perhaps he chose it himself, or maybe
someone called him that once and it stuck.

Anyway, this man called Shovel suggested that anyone who would
like to see other teams playing on Anzac Day should lobby the AFL
via e-mail.

What a great idea.

Bombard them with requests to consider changing the Essendon and
Collingwood exclusivity of Anzac Day. Weight of numbers will at
least make them think about it and give some consideration to the
idea.

If you are interested in taking part, simply copy the following
text into an e-mail and send it off. Let's see if we can make a
difference!

------ Copy Below This Line ------

To: football.operations@afl.com.au
Subject: Earn The Right To Play On Anzac Day!

Message:

The existing arrangement of having only Essendon and Collingwood
playing on Anzac Day does not seem fair to other clubs.

Why not commence a tradition of staging a Grand Final rematch on
this day? It would only add to the already great tradition of
Anzac Day.

The two sides that met in the previous year's Grand Final playing
each other would give all teams the opportunity of playing on
Anzac Day, and not merely leave it as the sole domain of Essendon
and Collingwood. Playing on Anzac Day would become an honour only
achieved by reaching the Grand Final the previous year.

From the players' perspective, it means you would no longer have
to play for either the Bombers or the Magpies to have a chance of
playing on this great day and sharing in the Anzac tradition.
Instead, your club would have to earn the right by making the
Grand Final.

Should the AFL feel strongly about keeping the Bombers versus
Magpies clash in place, perhaps a compromise could be reached,
one that has the Grand Final rematch every year, and in certain
circumstances there would also be an Essendon versus Collingwood
clash?

If a non-Victorian club reaches the Grand Final, and neither
Essendon nor Collingwood make the Grand Final, two matches could
be played on the following Anzac Day, the Grand Final rematch
interstate and the Essendon versus Collingwood game at the MCG.

If two Victorian clubs, or either Essendon or Collingwood make
the Grand Final, then the next Anzac clash could be a Grand Final
rematch at the MCG, and there would be no Essendon versus
Collingwood clash that particular Anzac Day.

Please at least give all the AFL clubs and the football public
the chance to have their say!

I think clubs should earn the right to play on this great day,
and I am sure that the majority of football supporters do too.

------ Copy Above This Line ------

Thanks for the great idea, Shovel. If everyone gets behind it, we
can make a difference.
