I came across a bomber magazine from 2004 which showed the playing list
It shows that of the 44 players in that list 15 remain

Is that normal? its just too much of a difference

i remember around the time of the finals in '04 (either shortly before or after) sheedy said in an interview that even though we'd reached the semis, the list we had wouldn't get us to a premiership, and that it would require a thorough clean-out.
funny that this didn't actually eventuate until sheeds was gone, 3 years later.

Add Rhys Magin and Jarrod Atkinson to above post, but it's still a hell of a clean out.

Perhaps the fact that almost half of our list has been turned over in 2 years??

Was well-needed though.

That's what happens when you fail to make the finals 4 years running... and for those retirees... all good things come to an end.

Damien Cupido was with West Adelaide in the SANFL this season (bottom of the ladder, two wins for the year i think)

Was at South Adelaide a for a few seasons before that (similar situation to Westies)

2004 for the bombers was actually a good season for us. Although, we did have a lot of older players playing back then. Since then we have been extremely dissapointing as a team. Maybe, last year mid-way through the year when we were about 6th or 7th after round 11 I thought we were a chance of finals. Besides that we have been shocking since 2004.

I think that is a bit harsh dumping a rookie player so quickly. I'd never seen much of Andrew Lee but you shouldn't just dump a rookie that quick before he hasn't even played many senior games.

1. he wasnt a rookie.
2. He's been around for 3 years and played like 5 games
3. If knights wasnt coaching, he'd still be around.

the average AFL player only spends 4 years in the system.

What a load of crap! Have a look at how many delisting/retirements happened every year. Knights didn't delist 25 players last year ya know.
The list turnover has been occuring for a few years now.

It's not what HAS to happen. Think of Brisbane. I'm not sure how many years they were in the finals on the trot, but four grand finals in a row for three premierships, and now seem to be heading back up without sinking as low as we have.

Whatever happened to the club "rule" that we MUST make the finals every year and win a premiership every, what was it - 7, 8 years? That was made a big deal of just a few years ago.

I'm not knocking Essendon per se, but when things don't go well, you have to ask questions, and do something about it. That may now be happening, with Sheedy and now John Quinn going, but list management and drafting really has to be looked at, as well.

What difference will 2 years will make?

I think they will be closer then most people would think.

Essendon 2000 Vs Essendon 2010

Lloyd Neagle
Lucas Gumby
Hird Myers
Wellman Pears
Fletcher Ryder
Mercuri Houli
Misiti Watson
Barnard Nash
Rama Lonergan
Bewick Jetta
JJ McVeigh
M. Johnson Reimers
Hardwick Slattery
Heffernan Stanton
Blumfield Welsh
Caracella Winderlich
Allessio Hille
Long Dempsey

If most of these guys can stay on the park and we can top up with some decent rookies and trades the future is bright.

Think that reimers better than MJ but not fair to put Myers against Hird. No one will match up against him for some time me thinks (about 11 years until we get Thomas Hird and he is best chance to be that good). In 2010 Lloyd and Lucas will still be playing. Dont think Fletch will somehow.

Apart from that love the match ups and is a good comparison except no Hurley :D

Have been fairly big changes in the last few years
Dodoro's gone from being the ground-level recruiter to a recruitment management, Merv Keane's taken his old job, few more staff got added as well
+ We don't have a cantankerous opinionated old coach over-riding the recruiters every year, apparently that helps.
