Really sad news, but with the way he lived it isn't overly shocking.

One of the greats, will always remember his big knees. Hmm, I'm probably as sad as someone can be without knowing the person with this one.
RIP

Former UFC champion, great fighter very tough he fought with a lot of heart and could take a shitload of punishment. Not the sort of guy who you could tap easily, if you know what i mean. Didn't think much of his braided hairdo that he once had though. RIP.

WTF? He was on a spiritual journey...
It would be hard to say he wasn't a bit of a nutbag. Harder by droves not to say he wasn't what get's bandied about these days as a 'warrior'. The broken info about his death atm seems to prove both in a way. Sad day for MMA, seconded of course to Tanners family and friends.

Enjoyed his fights leading up to his eventual title win before dropping it to Franklin. Seemed like a real workhorse, tough as nails.

Pretty shocking stuff. Some of his blogs are pretty eerie too.

Great fighter at his prime, RIP Evan.
Shocking, he was a bit of a nutter but still, didn't expect this.

From what I understand, Tanner was a ****ing good guy. Reading on Sherdog, there are a few stories doing the rounds from posters who knew him personally, and the things he would do for others were class acts, like taking fights for charity when he was dead broke himself, driving across half the states to help build a playground etc. I used to read his blogs, and he was always brutally honest about his weaknesses, and was always willing to talk to his fans etc.
He was a something of a nomad, and an adventurer by heart. He had done many illogical things with his time and money, and it seems the spirit that made him who he was, eventually cost him his life.
I can only say that I was a fan of what he represented to me, that being a kind of peaceful way to turn away from normality, and of what people are generally expected to do with thier lives.
Here is a link (that someone posted on Sherdog), of Big John Mcarthy's thoughts on the man himself, which is a good read IMO.

I was watching the finale of the Ultimate Fighter from I think end of June the other night and he was fighting Kendall Grove. You could tell Evan was past his best but man, he is one of the best at being able to cop punishment and still stand. Groves knees were dangerous and Tanner kept on taking them. I think both were told before the fight that it was their last chance at UFC.
Wow, they showed a fight of his on Foxtel just the other day. He was a very entertaining fighter, and I'm a fan of beards (as my avatar suggests).
So is anyone else here going to grow an Evan Tanner tribute beard? :D Joe Rogan did. :D
Unfortunately a stiff breeze is all I require for a clean shave.

What a bloke? A tonne of courage and a heart of gold. Whilst I have seen most of his UFC fights, the one I unfortunately remember him most for was at UFC 53 where he lost his title to Rich Franklin. Evan got battered and his face was an absolute mess by fight's end.
You even had to feel for Rich Franklin during that fight, another top fighter and down-to-earth guy, who publicly commented that he knew Evan was badly hurt, but was such a warrior that he just wouldn't drop or give in. If you see that fight, Franklin looks at Big John M, from memory, as if to say, this guy is battered, should I keep hitting him?
