View Full Version : VDK Quits, who do we pick?

I saw in the HS this morning that Tim Van Der Klooster has quit the club because he is unable to commit to to the training.

So that means we have 1 selection for the pre-season draft on Dec 19.

So are the roos going to go for Warrior? Lindsay or O'Connor????????

Or indeed someone else Paul! As VDK is a tall I would think they'd go for a big bloke so that leaves Lindsay or O'Connor. I'd say Lindsay as he seems to be a genuine ruckman whereas O'connor is, well I'm not sure what he is!

Paul Lindsay is a ruckman who is quite capable of playing forward. He'd be better the Ryan O'Connor.

Lindsay seems to be the best option as a mobile ruckman. Having two slow ruckmen (Burton and O'Conner) would leave us open to slaughter by players like Matthew Allan, Jeff White, John Barnes, Steven King, Josh Fraser, Brad Ottens etc. etc. At least with Lindsay, you'd have a chance of creating a contest.....he may not win, but the last thing you need is a few early confidence boosting marks to the opposition ruckman.

After the draft, we have plenty of midsized running players, so that would put Warrior out of calculations. But if they were to pick up one, the Doggies fans seem to be impressed by Jim Plunkett (now training at Carlton).

Tony Brown

I think Tony Brown will go fairly early, though I'm not sure how many teams are selecting but we're nominally 13 I believe. Shinners I've heard nothing but good things about Jim Plunkett, Doggies supporters were very disappointed and I heard Rohan Smith sound genuinely shocked that he was chopped. He is a bit slow for a midfielder but the word is he's one of those that can get the ball and is very hard to tackle. Could do worse but I think they'll select Lindsay if he's still available.

I thought that Tony Brown wasn't that fast either. As the likes of Greg Williams, Anthony Stevens, Brett Ratten, Darren Jarman, and Peter Bell have proven, you don't have to be *fast* to be an effective footballer. So maybe Jim Plunkett, especially if he has good delivery skills, could be the way to go. But I'd still go for a tall because our list seems to lack one mobile ruckman (note to anyone on the North administration that may be reading this: this excludes Ryan O'Conner on the grounds that he is not mobile).

The order for the pre-season draft following the 2000 season is:

st kilda
collingwood
port adelaide
west coast
fremantle
adelaide
sydney
richmond
western bulldogs
geelong
hawthorn
brisbane
kangaroos
carlton (INELIGIBLE)
melbourne
essendon

As you can see, Carlton is ineligible due to salary-cap problems.

The amount of vacant spaces on each club's list (deadline for delisting players is 12/12):

adelaide:2
brisbane:1
carlton:INELIGIBLE
collingwood:1
essendon:2......assuming m.pickett is delisted, which was mentioned in the age last week
fremantle:1
geelong:0
hawthorn:1
kangaroos:1
melbourne:1
port adelaide:0
richmond:1
st kilda:3
sydney:1
west coast:0
western bulldogs:2

Thus the ORDER OF PICKS is:

1. St Kilda......................Brett Voss
2. Collingwood
3. Fremantle
4. Adelaide
5. Sydney
6. Richmond
7. Western Bulldogs
8. Hawthorn
9. Brisbane
10. Kangaroos
11. Melbourne
12. Essendon
13. St Kilda
14. Adelaide
15. Western Bulldogs
16. Essendon
17. St Kilda

Thanks for that Hilly. With the Doggies also casting an eye over O'Conner, hopefully they'll reduce the stress levels of North fans by picking O'Conner with their earlier draft pick. Lindsay could still be available by the time we get our pick as the teams with earlier picks all seem to have enough talls. Plunkett may still be in the mix since Carlton don't have a draft pick. Hum....wonder if there are any more Freo rejects we could recycle http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/wink.gif

Shinner.... nup we got them all... but I heard "one of the young players" was looking to come home at the end of season 2001.

http://members.tripod.com/bartron/afl/lgsmile-ROOS.gif North Melbourne will be Premiers in 2001 http://members.tripod.com/bartron/afl/lgsmile-ROOS.gif

......and that "young player" will be closely followed by a regretful Peter Bell who will do a Stuart Anderson by going to watch North training during September 2001 with a "What the **** was I thinking when I left Arden Street" look on his face. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/wink.gif

Can Belly play Cricket???

I can be so nasty when I try...

Not only can Bell play cricket, but he can reconcile Aborigines with white Australia, sort out the US Presidential election, develop a fair and equitable taxation and social welfare system that helps those who are disadvantaged and yet rewards those who work hard, AND he will lead Fremantle into next year's finals and onto Premiership glory.

Cheers

p.s. Obviously I was exagerrating when I wrote that bit about Bell leading Freo into the finals and premiership glory. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/wink.gif

FYI, It is unlikely that Richmond will pick in the draft, probably die to salary cap pressures.

I know your probally talking out your ass again rooboy
BUT
hmmmmmmm
My best guess would be Walker

But i might say Shipp or Shcell

But they will all stay
Walker is getting games now
Shipp will to next year
And schell is being groomed to take over from Modra

Then again, its probally hopefull thinking on your part.

You guys at the roos make sure you look after the dockers recruit for next year.
I want abraham in ship shape condition.

Isn't motlop from the west too
Anyway, he will be coming home soon too

Which reminds me, i gotta check up on another recruit of next year.

Has to be a ruckman or tall ... perhaps Lindsay although I know nothing about him.

At least he is young and could improve ... and Geelong owe us some sort of decent player in an exchange - Robert Scott excluded of course.

What is the drum on Smith .. I have heard the boy can play but how will this injury effect him????? Is he in full scale training?

And by the way sabre, you really are a character.

Although if karma has anything to do with it, you'll have to improve for all the poor decisions you've made in the past - nuffbags.

And btw, I will never forgive your club for forcing me through so many boring Sunday afternoons of watching second raters run around - although the glee with which I watched Chris Bond lead by example was extreme, if not a little tiresome.

Fremantle are not second rate, they are third rate, and should never have been accepted into the league. Just watch how Bell's standards drop when playing with that bunch of losers.

Third rate, god that is high praise indeed.

Expected better from you CIK after what I read on roos.com.

Bunch of brittle duds they do happen to be out there, and as for the spineless Peter Bell, how much do you think Pagan regrets playing him in 1996 now, little chameleon.

Surely Ross Smith would have been more worthy by a long, long way with the benefit of hindsight.

Shows one thing, Bell might be intelligent, courageous, strong and iron willed but he is a selfish little so and so.

Should fit in well at a club like Freo, he can be king of the castle there.

Might even make that a topic - Should North have played Ross Smith or Peter Bell in 96 with the benefit of hindsight.

Compelling arguemtns both ways I would imagine

If one of their young guns becomes available after next year, I doubt they will want to trade with us after we stung them for a fortune in the Bell deal. We got two very high draft picks and a goos young player in return for a slow midget whose team probably lifted him to higher standard than he would normally be capable of, and we swung half a million bucks of salary cap pressure around onto the poor hapless Shockers.
They won't want us to take them for a ride again next year!

I know he is a bit injury prone and also an ex Esadun player but I wouldn't mind us drafting Peter Berbakov - he seemed to me to be a pretty handy tall backman at the red and blacks and I was surprised he was delisted (unless of course he is physically stuffed). Our lack of options down back is a bit of a concern particularly with Micky M on his last set of creaky legs.
