Best win - Round 20 v Collingwood. Given no chance to win.
Best mark - Mark Johnson's non-mark v Collingwood - Round 20
Best goal - Either of Blake Caracella's grubbers v Fremantle
Best performance in defeat - wasn't a defeat, but the Bulldogs game was pretty good. A defeat would have been against the Lions in Round 18
Best individual game performance - James Hird v Bulldogs, back from his injury. Top Game.
Best overall moment - Beating Carlton in Round 22 to just rub in the fact they got the spoon!
Most valuable player - Either Johnson (Jason just)
Most improved player of the year - Mark Bolton
Comeback player of the year - Hirdy
Newcomer of the year - Andrew Welsh. I'm big wraps for this kid now.
Best coaching move - Elimination Final - Scotty Lucas up forward. Won us the game that day.
Funniest moment - Watching Gary Moorcroft trying to start something with Josh Fraser
Worst loss - Port.
Worst performance in victory - Wasn't a victory, but David Hille's game against Brisbane in Round 18 was probably the worst performance of the year!
Worst umpire decision - the Mark Johnson non-mark.
Worst overall moment - losing to West Coast when we had the game in control (almost)
Dumbest coaching move - playing Danny Mac.
Dumbest mistake - anything during the round 17 game v Richmond
Worst fashion statement - I can't think of anything Essendon, but Ronnie Burns' white boots were pretty poor!

Best win Loved the Hawthorn win. BAARRRRNNNEEYYYY!!
Best mark MJs not paid against Collingwood
Best goal JJ against WC in the last qtr
Best performance in defeat Port in the final, comeback against North was good too.
Best individual game performance Salmon against Collingwood. Well done big fella.
Best overall moment Salmon going off in the last qtr against WC. Great round of applause to kill the demons of the past.
Most valuable player Fletcher - can't win without him
Most improved player of the year Bolts, special mention to DJ
Comeback player of the year Pev after breaking his arm and Hird after the broken face.
Newcomer of the year Welshy, but keep your eyes on Sam Hunt.
Best coaching move Heffernan to the bench. nah, Scotty to half back, easy.
Funniest moment ****yn Tarkyn Lockyer kicking the ball out to Jacobs and Hird to result in 2 goals, and nearly a 3rd to Lloyd if he didn't miss.
Worst loss ANZAC day and getting spanked by the cats was embarrassing
Worst performance in victory Melbourne game last qtr collapse.
Worst umpire decision Can't remember who we played, but there was a melee right after a goal and the opposition ruckman was involved. The umpire at the center refused to ball up until their ruck ran back to the center to contest. Clear favoritism and it cost us a center clearance.
Worst overall moment Fremantle game losing Hird and Lloyd. Also watching Lloyd hit the deck against WC, sickening.
Dumbest coaching move Playing Reynolds and Harvey so much when they clearly weren't ready for senior footy
Dumbest mistake "NO RULES"
Worst fashion statement Jimmy's head gear

Dumbest mistake "NO RULES"

Can't agree with those two. Reynolds and Harvey will both go into next year having had a taste already. Has to be a good thing.

As for the "No Rules" thing........despite the fact that we lost, I thought that was the turning point of our season.

No Rules: fine to go into a game with that attitude but why the **** would you announce it to the media? Result - SLAUGHTERED by the umpires. It was just plain stupid.

Agree about McGrath. But you can't say that that the club is worse off for giving Reynolds and Harvey a decent run.

No Rules: fine to go into a game with that attitude but why the **** would you announce it to the media? Result - SLAUGHTERED by the umpires. It was just plain stupid.

It was still the turning point of our season. We weren't going to win that game, but at least we seemed to get a bit of the hunger back, and we let everybody else know as well. And by letting the media know, the players knew they had to perform - which they did. The fact is, we lost that game by 30-odd points and the media were then claiming that Essendon were 'back'. I don't know how you can complain about that. It was a great move - the turning point.

Think of the big picture and not the immediate consequences. At that point of the season, we knew we weren't a great chance of winning the flag. (or even making the finals!) Sheeds and everyone involved would have been thinking of next year and rightly so. No point chasing the
near-impossible when you can start preparing for the future.

At the end of the day, the club is in a better position now that it was halfway through the season.

How can you guys seriously say that the "no rules" comment was the dumbest coaching move?

Do you not believe that it was the turning point of the season?

How was it 'dumb' when it resulted in us playing our hardest and most physical game of the year?

Would we have played as we did that round had Sheedy NOT made the "no rules" comment........?

Our confidence (even that of the supporters) was sky high after that game because we knew we could still match it (nearly) with the most physical side in the comp.

It was only a mistake if you were under the illusion that we were going to win that game......

So we were slaughtered by the umpires?

As i said, that's only a mistake if you thought we were going to win the game.

And you didn't answer my question - Was that game the turning point of our season or not?

If it was, (as i'm sure most of us would agree) then how was it a mistake?

It was by a "John" from Croydon and it said:

"Even though the Bombers didn't win, it wasn't a bad 2002. The Blues spooned and the Magpies wobbled. Yep, not a bad result all round."

I thought it must have been John.

You people continue to say that the "no rules" comment was the dumbest coaching move, despite the FACT that it was the "no rules" comment that fired us up, fired Brisbane up, and as a result, brought the hunger back.

Must I delve into the old threads on this board and have a look at everyones comments after the game?

We were sh|t up until that game, yet emerged form it with a confidence we hadn't had since the start of the year.

Can somebody actually explain why it was a dumb move?

It may have been a dumb thing to say if you think only of that game, but if you look at the big picture, it was exactly the kick in the arse our guys needed.

topdon
6 Oct 2002, 16:19
I agree with you gPhonque totally! That single comment made the game what it was. It did bring our hunger and passion back, and we may have not made the finals if Sheedy didn't make the remark.

Disagree boys, we were always going to come out breathing fire in that game no matter what sheedy said during the week. It`s the reason why Adrian I was very keen to get goals in off a certain young lady....
