View Full Version : Nick Davis wants Sydney - but does Sydney want him?

While Nick Davis has stated quite publicly that he wants to move to Sydney, there has been no word yet on what the Sydney administration thinks of this. From what I can see, there are plenty of negative aspects - for example:

- Sydney has rarely used a small crumming forward in modern times. Derek Kickett played primarily in the midfield, Craig O'Brien was a marking target rather than a crummer, Simon Garlick had little impact and Robbie Ahmat quickly fell out of favour. For years the main scorers have been key forward targets (Lockett, Hall, Goodes) or mid-sized players (O'Loughlin, Lewis) with the midfielders chipping in. Introducing a small forward would be quite a change.

- He had a very poor 2002, averaging less than 10 posessions per game and kicking only 31 goals in 20 games.

- Collingwood would no doubt want a fairly high draft pick for him, and Roos has promised not to trade a first or second round pick. Therefore, it would be necessary to trade a fairly useful and experienced player, either directly to Collingwood or to another club for the required draft pick, for a player who is by no means guarenteed to suceed.

- Leaving him for the pre-season draft is a risk, with a few other sides having picks before Sydney.

With a few players like Bolton and Kirk needing to move into the midfield due to retirements after having spent much of last season in the forward line, there is definately a spot for a small forward available. However, do we truly want a person who is specialised in this position - particularly at the cost of a currently listed player?

Why not give Davis a run in the midfield and see what he can do? If he's just a small forward, then he might have add another dimension to his game.

I'm undecided. He has talent, so I wouldn't mind him playing for us. Having said that, he has been suffering from injuries, and Collingwood could be stubborn with trades, so I don't think I'll be distraught if we miss out.

we'll see.

I'm as ambivalent about Davis as the rest of you - not because I don't think he's a talented player but because I think we have other recruiting priorities and really want to see our young talent blossom on our list rather than Collingwood's.

But I don't think you can pigeon hole Davis as a small forward. He's far more of a running and marking goal kicker than a crumber and he's not acutally that small. At the start of the season his official measurements were 183cm and 85kg and if you look at him he's quite solidly built. As reference points, those measurements put him exactly midway between Buchanan (who is more of a crumber or midfielder) and O'Loughlin who is often described as a small forward but is really anything but. (Maybe that description was in comparison to Plugger!)

Fact:

Nick Davis wants to come to Sydney.

Fact:

Nick Davis is out of contract with the up and coming Magpies.

Fact:

Sydney has no real salary cap trouble.

Conclusion - Sydney should be able to snag Nick Davis for nothing in the pre-season draft.

If Sydney can get him in the pre season draft, GREAT. But I wouldn't trade to much for him. Definetly not draft picks.

Despite the fact that there are several other clubs with picks before Sydney, some who may also have room under their salary cap?

If Sydney won't trade for him, he won't take a chance in the draft of ending up somewhere else. He wants to go to Sydney, he doesn't hate Collingwood - its an important distinction.

I think the biggest winner out of this is collingwood. Porthos is right. Davis would like to go to Sydney, but unless he's burnt too many bridges at collingwood he will stay rather than go anywhere else other than Sydney.

He was told that he was not to come to the Collingwood Best and Fairest dinner.

I'd say he is going to go one way or another

Davis has stated that he's homesick and he would have signed a contract by now if he had no choice but to stay. No club will take chances with him, because he could just not turn up for the year and just live in Sydney and live off a contract. Not worth it.

Look what's happening with Des Headland...

Davis is not in the same class as Headland. Talk of draft picks 5 and Croad etc. would not be circulating if it was Davis.

Strong rumour down here is that Davis is as good as Sydney's, as of last week in fact. So Sydney, what do you do??

Anyone that follows Sydney that does not rate Davis, obviously has never watched him play closely.

He has Kicked 30odd goals this year, and that is with an injury, is a magnificent kick, plays taller than 183cm and is probably Collingwoods classiest player. Can become one of the franchise players in the league, without a shadow of a doubt.

He was being groomed for a midfield role, and due to sydneys ageing midfield, would be just what the doctor ordered.

I am a Collingwood suppporter and would like to see him stay, however I can sympathise with his wishes to go home, but he will not shaft Collingwood, he has said as much.

Sydney will have to extract their first round draft choice as well as brobably a third (similar to the williams trade).

i heard this morning that it seems likely, due to sydneys lack of willingness to lose draft picks, that nick davis will remain at collingwood.
on top of that lack we basically can't afford to pay a lot of the players that are out of contract with other clubs and so the swans are saying that the will pretty much stick with the core of the players which we have currently and use the money for the draft picks. but if any player may get traded it could be nicksy to port adelaide.
