That we win a premiership?
It has suddenly occured to me this morning that the 4-year contract signed by Shane Crawford is probably his last. And it would be awful for a player of his calibre to not have won a premiership.
Without a doubt Crawford has been our best player since the passings of the great players of the 80's. The only deserving captain who carries the burden of this team through and through. The great players in the 80's have all won premierships, but Crawf haven't, not yet.
When you think about the current great players, you think of the Hirds, Vosses, Mcleods, even Carey, and they all proudly display one or more premiership medallions. I used to think, Crawford's time will come soon, he will lead the Hawks to a flag one day.
But all of a sudden I realise that Crawford is not immortal. All of a sudden I realise that he is 28 and will retire in the near future. All of a sudden I realise that our club winning a flag will not be so easy. The thought of Crawford finishing his career without a flag is sickening.
I know compared to the Lions and Port and others, our team is currently not in the position where they deserve a flag in the near future. Yet if there is only one player in our team who deserves a premiership, it's Crawford.
Just to think, Crawford finishing his playing career with a Brownlow, a handful of Best and Fairests, and as the Captain of a premiership side. It would finally make others realise that he has every right to join the ranks of Hird and Voss.
I know i might be sounding selfish, but I really hope that we win the flag within 4 years, even if it is just for Crawf. He to Hawthorn is almost like what Buckley was to Collingwood a few years back. I would feel absolutely gutted if he goes without a flag.
Any thoughts or comments?
