What do we need?, who will we target in the upcoming AFL drafts and beyond. You can include in this draft the PSD (that being mature players).

There's a young Tasmanian, Maverick Wheller (?) who looks set to be an early draft pick in a few years.

Seems a likely type to be drafted by the Gold Coast.

Yes Ive actually seen him play, he is definately a player that would fit the mould.

Also he is only 16yo so hopefully he is on the recruiters radar. :thumbsu:

King...no

Raines.. well he started off well winning a RS nomination and getting regular games, but hes dropped off a bit now hasnt he? I dont think GC will really look at players like Raines, hes more likely to clogg a list.

I thought Raines had some major injury problem/s this year. I also thought I saw Terry Wallace saying that the RFC were committed to Raines. I think he'll be turning 25 that year (2011) also, so unless he becomes an out-and-out superstar over the next 2 years I don't see the Gold Coast making a play for him.

Any info on these guys FG?

Both U16 Vic Metro representatives.

They both play in my local league (not in my team unfortunately) and they're both guns.

Both can really play anywhere.. not sure what, but very versatile.

Excellent cricketers too.

Adam McKenzie ?? if so i heard he will bypass GC and try his hand in the draft , though a lot of time to change his mind , he is a KPP for Broady.

Bit of a write up here (http://www.eaglesflyinghigh.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=310602#p310602) on the U16 GF from last week.

Some quick thoughts on the top prospects from the U16 grand finals other than Mav Weller - who's been talked about a fair bit already:

David Swallow (WA): From what I've seen of him looks the complete package when it comes to midfielders. Good height (183cm at 15), big possession winner a lot of it contested/in tight at stoppages, can push forward effectively, dual sided, good pace, high work-rate/tank and leadership skills. Was BOG in the U16 GF. Will most likely play in the 2009 U18 Championships for WA.

Jack Darling (WA): Big bodied (188cm, 86kg at 16), powerful, pack crashing CHF prospect. Took some very impressive contested marks (often outnumbered) in the U16 GF and crashed several packs open.

Josh Toy (Vic Metro): Big, strong bodied, powerful midfielder/forward (183cm, 87kg - built like a man). Excellent composure/decision making (has time with the footy) and can roost the pill a long way (55m+). Apparently is very quick too (3.9s over 30m).

Josh Green (Tasmania): Tough, speedy, line-breaking, goal kicking bloodnut winger/midfielder.

Curtly Hampton (NT): Didn't play, but apparently has big wraps on him - commentators said Franklin-like qualities.

Prepared to be offered a bunch of Qld hacks because they are "from Qld and the Coast would want them". Or a bunch of rubbish fringe players because the "Coast would want experienced players".

You've just got to laugh at those suggesting they hold on to their hacks for another year and trade them to the Coast to get a good draft pick.

The GC FC's picks won't be just a free-for-all for any club with surplus players. They will recruit players according to their value, not just because they have to "fill a list".

Yep, hopefully we can learn from the mistakes of some of the other clubs.

Following the Hawthorn, West Coast formula is a must.

Piers Flanagan or Fraser Russell from the APS could be high picks if they decide to fully commit to footy

Number 1 on your list for next years draft should be Kane Lucas. He won the Colts best and fairest medal in the WAFL this year and was probably our best midfielder in the 18's carnival. He has a tremendous workrate great pedigree (his old man played for the Swans) and is by all reports a good kid.

Blood nut is correct. While the red is very quick he needs to work on his core stability. I would know this going to his school and quite often i sit him on his arse

Heres some info on some of the SA boys

Scott Lycett;
200 cm ruckman/forward with a fair frame on him already (roughly 90 kg). Good skills for a big man and good overhead.

Hayden Jolly;
Only seen him play a couple of times but he's an absolute ball magnet. Runs hard all day and reads the play well. Usually disposes of it well.

Mitch Grigg;
Doesn't turn 15 until early next year but he looks a lively type. A strong, inside midfielder with a penatrating left foot. Can play in next years 16s championship aswell. Should be interesting to see how he performs as one of the more experienced lads.

Jamie Solly;
My pick of the bunch. If he continues to develop he will be a gem. Rangey type HFF/wingman. At 190 cm he poses matchup problems up forward, but if he happens to get tied down he'll use his engine up on the wing.

Just a fluff piece ,

Gold Coast to chase Nathan Ablett

Craig Hutchison

THE Gold Coast Football Club has signalled its intention to talk to reluctant star Nathan Ablett when he moves north at the end of this year.

Only weeks after Ablett shocked Geelong with news he was leaving, the GC17 franchise is ready to pursue the 32-game premiership forward.

GC17 bid committee member Graeme Downie this week said the club would ask the question.

"I don't think there's any doubt the boy has a lot of ability, but if he didn't want to play at the club where his father was a star and his brother is now, he may not want to play anywhere," Downie said.

"But you'd have to ask him the question."

Downie said the new club was working solidly on building its list and had "a couple of other players in our sights".

"Without being dramatic, you don't know how many current players will be playing in two years given injuries and so forth," he said.

"All we'd like to see is that every player in the AFL is contracted until 2010 and no further.

"That will suit us perfectly."

The last thing you'd want them to do is invest all that time and effort to convince Ablett to join the club, only for him to realise that he really doesn't want to play at all. They could miss other opportunities in the mean-time.

Raines was runner up in the rising star 2 years ago but was injured from about rnd 2 this year. He will re establish himself next season. I think Gold Coast will have to lower their sights a bit its not like they are going to have all the superstars of the comp knockin their door down!

How would that work?

Is there only one phone in the office? Only two chairs in the boardroom?

While the consortium team may not be Rhodes Scholars, I reckon there's probably enough brain power down there to chase more than one player at once.

I'm not saying that it isn't possible. But in order to show how serious you were about it you would need all the big guns from the GC (pres, coach, head recruiter) continually meeting with him, his father(?) and his management around the clock for a period of time. In the mean-time other teams will be spending more time with other potential targets and sending some of their big guns out. If Ablett really wanted to have another go at the AFL he would be entering the draft of his own accord and wouldn't need to be convinced by anybody to do so.

Geez I hope he finds himself a decent girl in Adelaide, one who can persuade him to stay.

Would be a great pick up for the GC if they can get him, has the potential to be a real "marquee" player for them. Tall, strong, pack marking KPF, with the potential to also be a top class ruckman who, in 2011 will be just entering his best years. If he does go as an "uncontracted" player, I just hope the AFL compensate us sufficiently.

Hey guys, just a quick one to see if you guys have heard or what you think of Matt Storey and Nathaniel Congoo. These boys are really exciting prospects with both being fairly new to the game. Matt has been playing for 3 years and has been playing senior footy at CHB and probably should have got BOG in the GF and is top age 18 next year. Nathaniel is in his first year of AFL an made the State 16 side this year.. Very athletic and big upside!!! did have some injury concerns late in the year but interested to see if you guys have heard about these 2 exciting players.

I think what the Gold Coast need more than anything is some local talent in their side, to really make it their "own" team.

anyone have any thoughts on potential QLD draft targets, specifically the crop of boys that are U/15 and U/16's at the moment??????

i would think some boys like:

peter yagmoor, rex liddy, dalton tucker?

Actually, what they need more than anything is the best possible young talent from around the country. Brisbane's '01-'03 sides weren't exactly littered with Queenslanders were they?
