In which season did Fitzroy score an average of 108 points per match, yet still win the wooden spoon?
1980.....
for wooden spooners at least we were entertaining to watch that year.

Late in the last game of the season against Carlton, Fitzroy's Frank Marchesani kicked what looked like a goal (to everyone except the person, who really mattered - the goal umpire). It was given as a behind. Fitzroy lost the game by 4 points. If we'd won, we'd have finished the season in 9th position on the ladder.

and because of that miss we shipped Frank to Carlton the next year from memory!

Must of of been a big drop in form in1980 as i believe we finished 3rd or 4th the prevoius year

after we walloped Essendon in the first week of the finals in 1979, in 1980 our players suffered "Elimination Final Hangover". '79 was our first finals (except the 78 Night Series I guess) in about 18 years....

We also bounced back to the finals in 1981, despite losing players of the calibre of Beecroft & Marchesani.

Interestingly in 1980, we kicked more points during the H&A season than did Geelong, the minor premiers! :eek:

This all supports my comment that we were much better than the ladder position indicated.
