I was just browsing the bookshop when out of nowhere a Roys book appears. I contemplate the purchase for 0.035 seconds and hand over the dough. I'm a fool for Fitzroy merchandise.

Anyhoo, it's called "For the love of the jumper", it's at A&R Bookstores (amongst others), its $55 and its a jolly good read. Plus it has a foreword by Bert.

My only (minor) criticism is that a few of the more recent photos could have been more carefully chosen - less post-merger Pike and Lynch in a book about Fitzroy, thanks. And that one of Boydy in civvies after training - at least give him a ball to handball at the camera a la the old footy cards! Also, I don't know about Alan McConnell as a club great. He was there, sure, but so was Mullarvey.

What are you trying to say about Mullarvey?

I was dissapointed with the Brisbane stuff in the book. Sure, i go for the Brisbane Lions now, but i wanted the book to be entirely on Fitzroys history and not finishing off talking about the new era of the Brisbane Lions, because in reality its not a new era for Fitzroy, its a new era for old Fitzroy fans who feel they can support Brisbane.

Suffice to say there won't be a Royal Comission called regarding his non-selection for the team of the century. Although he did give us a great deal of pleasure while watching the reserves play.

Now that I've had a bit more of a dip into the book, some of the early stuff is exceptional. The photo of the 1903 Fitzroy v Collingwood GF at the MCG is very special. If you think the current members stand is a bit cramped and poncy, check out the 1903 version, complete with two storey verandah.
