Too young to remember Barassi, therefore Pagan.

Pagan - he is one of our own. Barassi was a great coach, but he is Melbourne.

best coach: Pagan
best appointment: Barassi (changed the culture to a winning one)

Having said that, Pagan may have done the same if given the opportunity

Pagan.

With all due respect to Barassi, looking at the players in his sides in the mid 70s, it was much like Essendon of 2000. They flew on auto-pilot and with that sort of skill a monkey could have coached them to a flag.

The turnaround in the teams fortune since he took over is amazing.
And to continually keep them up top or thereabout in an era were the competition is so even, other teams performances fluctuate from year to year and in a system that rewards the underperformers.

Pagan is the best North have ever had, at least statistically.
That's not to belittle Barassi who was brilliant, and before his time in many respects. Don't forget he coached in the days when discipline was not enforced (though he tried) and players often had a late night with few beers and a smoke the night before a game. As someone else mentioned, he changed the culture at North.

For all of the reasons given above, my vote goes to Pagan.

Pagan for me... he does better with less overall talent...

But Barassi was like a messiah... leading our football club to the treasured land for the first time...

We may have little money... but boy can we play the game...

I understood Darky. Fwee Woderwick!

On the subject at hand. A few years ago Keith Greig said that North should have won more premierships in the 70's with the personnel we had and actually "blamed" Barassi for our failure to do so. He said that if we'd had a "better" coach we would have been more successful! I defer to the dual Brownlow Medallist. Pagan by a mile!!

Refer to the Monty Python movie entitled "The Life of Brian".
(His mother was raped by a Roman!
Raped you say ?
Well yes, at first.)
Very funny movie, and I am pleased to announce that Bwodewick is fwee at last.

Denis Pagan is one of the four people that all North supporters owe a debt to. Without them we would be long gone. They are (in no particular order), Wayne Carey, Denis Pagan, Greg Miller and Ron Casey.

Denis Pagan, all time supercoach.

BARASSI

If he had Carey as a player North would never lose a match.

It is a matter of being in the right spot at the right time and pagan can count himself very lucky.

Pagan & Barassi are the only real contenders.

I'll give it to Pagan because :
* 2 flags
* he also made a great contribution over many years as U19 coach
* got us to 3rd in 97 when Carey missed 2/3 of the season
* got us to the finals in the wake of the Carey exit
* you can make a direct comparison of how essentially the same personnel performed under Schimma

The only real black mark is the 98GF. ****, we should have won that one !!!!!

But you can say the same about Barassi. With all due respect to the great Hawthorn, Richmond & Carlton teams of that era, we should have won 3 flags in the 70s.

Dennis Pagan number 1 coach for North so far. Also played in the early 1970's team.
Back on board as a player in 2007-8. Can disregard the Carlton recent affiliation with that of Carey's Adelaide. Club champion. :thumbsu:

Agree, an unlike Essendon of 2000 we won more than one flag. Thanks Denis.
