View Full Version : Who would you take if you where the list manager?
Give us your detailed plan on who you would draft.
Pick#5
Steele Sidebottom – 182cm, 79kg – Murray Bushrangers.
Midfielder/half forward/half back.
Natural smooth moving midfielder with excellent skills on both sides of the body. Very smart player who reads the play well and has a good understanding of the clearances. Runs to the right spots and provides good options. Uses the ball well by hand and by foot. The only real downside he has is he is only steady in the pace department. Has enough speed to get himself out of tight situations but is not going to burst out of a pack or through the middle of the ground. Has been used in a variety of roles including half back, half forward and midfield. Very composed under pressure and chooses the right options . Although he is not what you would call a genuine hard nut and likes to play more of a play maker role he has no fear in putting his head over the ball when he has to and does not shy away from aphysical contest.Played a great finals game against Rangers where his efforts in the second quarter put his side back on top. Backed that up the following week with a strong game against Oakleigh before putting on the Rusty show ( and what a show it was ) in the TAC Final.
Other options Hamish Hartlett or Jack Ziebell.
Pick#23
Jordan Lisle – 196cm, 87kg – Oakleigh Chargers/Carey Grammar
CHB/CHF
Tall KP player who gets used at both ends of the ground. Good strong mark who has good foot skills and kicks the ball a long way.For a big bloke he is reasonably good in traffic and has reasonably good pace . Has a bit of a question mark on his agility, his turning circle is not great. His goal kicking is pretty reliable. His defensive side is good and he reads the play well which enables him to get to contests in the back half. Already has a good frame and he holds his position in the contest well.
Other options If Lisle is gone then possibly Tom Lynch who is a 191cm utility who has done a good job as a tall defender in some games or Trengove if he was available.
Otherwise probably another mid here (Okeefe,Pearce,Speight) and an extra project tall later.
Andrew Lovett pick#second round
If we get a pick here.
Matthew Broadbent – 189cm, 81kg – Woodville-West Torrens.
Midfielder/half back
Has played mainly half back or run with roles but he looks like a kid who can play a natural midfield role as well. He has pretty good pace and has good hands in close. Uses the ball well by foot as well. Runs hard all day and when he plays at half back he is prepared to run and make an option or run and carry the ball. Gave SA good drive in most games. Despite his defensive roles he managed to find a bit of the as well. Stoppage work looked good in the games i saw him play.
Other options Rhys Okeefe,Clancee Pearce,Nick Suban,Tom Rockliff,Ash Smith,Shuey.
Pick#39
Tom Hill – 198cm, 79kg –Northern Knights.
FP forward/back back up ruck.
Bottom age tall who is still a bit on the skinny side. Had good under 16 form and has had a steady season this year without being outstanding. Has played mainly forward and ruck this year. His ruck skills are ok but I see him as more of a KP player at either end of the ground than a ruckman. His pace is ok for a tall and he is reasonably agile. His is a solid mark and reads the game well. His down side is his kicking which is not great all the time.Has had games where he has used the ball very well but has also had some ordinary days. Doesn’t mind making for few tackles.
Other options As far as defenders go maybe Jayden Post,Zack Sengstock. Other than that you may go ruck here with Redden or go midfield with any of Klemke,Allwright,Sheahan,Sloane,Strauss,Kilpin.
Pick#55
Zachary Clarke – 203cm, 84kg – Oakleigh Chargers
Ruckman
Vic Metro’s fourth string ruckman who has had a reasonable year for the Chargers so far. Has split his time with some ruck duties as well as playing at FF. He does not win as many taps as he should for a player of his height but he has done pretty well in the games I have seen him play. His has good skills by foot and by hand and is pretty mobile with good pace for a tall. Has shown he can take a good contested mark but it is also one area of his game that could improve a bit more. He gets to the rights spots but has spilled a couple grabs that he should have taken at various times during games. His goal kicking is pretty good and he has been in Oakleigh’s better players on a number of occasions this year.
Other options Steven Gaertner if you thought he might not make it to round 5 or the rookie draft.Otherwise go midfield or Riley Milne if he was there.
Pick#71
Steve Gaertner – 198cm, 88kg -Dandenong Stingrays
KPP or ruck
His lack of consistency, average foot skills and a slight lack of footy nous cost him at last years draft but it has been good to see that Steve has gone away and worked on a few areas that have seen his game improve a lot. He has spent more time at half back this year and he does look comfortable in that position. He likes to rebound and carry the ball through the middle and his game sense has really improved a lot this year.
His problem area is still his kicking. Although he is not a really bad kick he can be prone to just throwing the ball onto the boot and trying to unload which leads to mixed results although he is generally kicking it 50 meters when this happens. His defensive efforts at half back have been very good. For a big bloke his pace is pretty good and he can take a strong contested mark.
Had a good finals series for the Rays and was named best in two of their finals. He had a shakey start to the GF with a few early fumbles but played a very good second half.Has been handy when used in the ruck.
Other options Another mid here hard to say who may be around, maybe Gotch, Duryea or similar.
Rookie#1
Leigh Kitchen – 180cm, 73kg – Eastern Rangers.
Midfielder
Has bounced back pretty well after missing all of last season. Good midfielder or small forward who reads the hit outs well and has good crumbing skills up forward. His work rate is very good and he tackles well. Finds a heap of the ball and he handballs a lot but it is generally creative. The down side is his kicking. He is not always a great user of the ball by foot.Very strong at the contest and not afraid to get in and under.
Rookie#2
Levi Casboult -196cm, 95kg –Dandenong Stingrays.
KPP defence ?
Ruckman who is not overly tall but uses his leap well and wins a lot of hit outs. Gets around the ground ok but never gets really big numbers. Pace is ok and skills are pretty good for a tall. Can take a good contested mark.
Probably going to be too short to be drafted as a ruckman but his mobility and great leap would possibly be used to make a strong defender.
Rookie#3
Matt Suckling – 183cm, 84kg – Sandringham Dragons.
Midfielder
He has had a pretty good year this year for Sandy as an overage player. Has come back well after missing a lot of footy last year and has been consistently in Sandringham’s best players. Strong bodied midfielder with reasonable pace. Reads the game well and his skills are generally pretty good. Generally finds a lot of the ball and uses it pretty well.

Pick 5 ; This decision is a toughy, there's no doubt about that. I'm a firm believer that midfield's win premierships, and I think we lack that one or two star midfielder/s.
Now, I want to draft someone with skill. The best two IMO with regards to disposal skills are Ziebell & Sidebottom, Rich will be gone by now. I would also like to draft someone with versatility, but they both tick them boxes so can't set them apart there.
So lets have a look at previous events outside of the Championships. Ziebell won the Ben Mitchell Medal for the best player in the series against the Irish and Sidebottom kicked 10 goals in a TAC Cup Grand Final and did extremely well at the draft camp. I think I'm going to have to go with gut feeling here as I can't set these two promising kids apart. And my decision will be Ziebell.

Pick 5 : Jack Ziebell - Classy midfielder with sublime skills and fantastic composure.
Pick 23 : Jordan Lisle - Tall defender/forward that is very versatile and strong overheard. Quite quick for his height.
Pick 39 : Chris Hall - Very quick small midfielder that has a nice skill set. Might go a bit earlier though.
Pick 55 : Bart McCulloch - Ruckman that has an engine of a midfielder and can go forward and kick goals. Positioning in contests a slight concern though.
Pick 71 : Wayde Mills (BRL) - Delisted by the Brisbane Lions but is a honest, hard-working tall defender so deserves another chance. Lacks a bit of skill though.
PS : Have done all my draft profiles but don't want to unearth them yet so it's all surprises when my phantom draft arrives. :p

Pick 5 : Hartlett/Yarran. If Port go for Hartlett then I'd grab Yarran.
Lovett Pick(12 - 20) : Firstly I think Lovett could get us 12 to Sydney packaged up with 39. I'd look at players like Swift, Mckernan, Blease. I'd go with next best mid but if there was a really good tall that fell a bit like Mckernan then we'd pull the trigger. Could Hurley fall this far? Rance fell last year.
Pick 23 : Best backmen available - Lisle? If we get a good tall for the Lovett pick then maybe the best ruckman available here.
Next Pick : Ruckman or utility depending of previous pick.
Next Pick : Utility/KP backmen/Bottom aged kid with a lot of upside.

NOTE: HYPOTHETICAL (Lovett + 39 for pick 12)
Pick 5- Steele Sidebottom
We all know of his remarkable performance at the Dome in the TAC Cup final, but throughout the champs and final series, he's climbed up the ranks.
Is a very smart player, who, without pace to burn, simply makes the right decisions and executes perfectly on both feet.
He isn't overly big, but can outmark bigger opponents and reads the ball and general play so well. Can also run all day as shown by his DC results.
I mentioned it in another thread, but if you build an A-Grade midfield, then any defence will look 100% better and work itself out.
Bomber fan as well, which is just a bonus :D
Other Options: Hurley, Ziebell, Hartlett
Hoping to Slide: Daniel Rich
Pick 12- Jackson Trengove
Has been on our rader and he could prove to be one of the better KPP's from this draft.
Has been dogged by injuries this year but is the perfect modern day backman. Aggresive, quick, athletic, great hands and isn't one of those athletes who don't know how to play football (Mark Bolton, Naitanui).
Has put on something like 10kg and would be a great prospect as a CHB who could have stints in the ruck if needed.
Other Options: Swift, Yarran
Hoping to Slide: No one, would be great here.
Pick 23- Rhys O'Keefe
You look in most Phantom Drafts on here, and you'll find this guy as far as the third round, but i can tell you he won't last that far.
Someone who is underrated on here and doesn't have any major weaknesses to speak of.
He is a running half back who can play midfield, who works hard, runs to the right positions and is a smart footballer.
He is a beautiful kick of the football, and is a classy finisher. Good size and someone who i think will prove to be one of the better pick ups in the second round. That is, if he lasts that long.
Other Options: Suban, Roughead
Hoping to Slide: ??
Pick 55- Tom Allwright
Haven't seen a lot of him so i am basing most of my views from ant's profile write up about him.
Looks like he is steady in the pace department, good skills and good in the air.
Pick 71- Steve Gaertner
Very much a project player, but his athleticism will catch the eye of many clubs looking for a late round pick up.
At 198cm, he certainly has the height to lock down a KP spot in the future, although he plays mostly as a running half back, which is remarkable considering his size.
His foot skills are generally ok, but he can give you a lot of shanks and is prone to turn the ball over. Very good pace and mobility for his size, but a lack of natural football ability and smarts may prove to be his downfall at AFL level.

I'm only going off reports and the little amount of footage I've seen so I might put players too low or high.
Pick 5: Michael Hurley
Pick 12: Chris Yarran (if we possibly get that pick)
Pick 23: Nick Suban
Pick 39: Michael Still
Pick 55: Johnny Rayner
Pick 71: Steve Gaertner
Rookie 1: Matt Cunningham
Rookie 2: Daniel Murray
Rookie 3: Matt Suckling

He's bottom aged, so yes.
#5 hurley or hartlett
?? #12 trengove, robinson, mckernan, swift, zaharakis
?? #23 robinson, swift, zaharakis, milne
?? #39 milne, senstock
i think swift will likely go 1st round now after testing well in both speed and endurance as well as the jump.

5. Hartlett or Sidebottom be happy with either.
23. Lisle/Broadbent. Hoping for another pick around here for Suban/DeBoer.
39. Schoenmakers/Allwright/Klemke whoever is available.
55. Alex Silvagni. Have no doubt he will be picked up so we will have to beat other clubs to him. Ready made defender we need.
71. Would like to pull a 23-24yo ruckman capable of playing AFL from somewhere for here but dont know where from. Miracles happen, ive seen it on bumper stickers :D.
Rookies
Bart McCulloch. May get drafted but he wont be ready for years so I dont see the point.
Nathan O'Keefe. Was kicking bags on good players in the local senior comp out here before the Ranges got him mid season. Would have flown under the radar a bit.
Stewart Crameri. Because we need to have some incentive for players to play for Bendigo.
I am assuming that EFC will swap pick 12 for 23 after trading Lovett to the swans.
Pick 5 - Hurley or Hartlett or Sidebottom or Ziebell.
Pick 12 - Swift or Walters or Trengove or Stephen Hill
Pick 39 - O'Keefe, Suban or Mitch Brown or Lynch
Pick 55 - Redden or Banner or Zaharakis
Pick 71 - Could be next best midfielder or small defender or ruck.
Pick 87 - See Above
Pick 71 and 87 could be mature aged players from state wide competitions.

Just out of interest, how many people would have selected Sidebottom pre - TAC Cup GF?
Not that his GF performance shouldn't hold weight of course.

Exactly what i was thinking. Hardly heard a whisper about him (in relation to pick #5) until his 10-goal performance was splashed on the back of the HUN.
But i'd love him at Essendon just for his name.

Im on record on this site before the GF saying that we should pick a midfielder and i would be happy with any of Hartlett,Ziebell,Sidebottom or Hill at 5.
Hi guys, I know I'm new (please don't flame me :o).
Pick 5: Steele Sidebottom, Jack Ziebell if he has already been taken.
Pick 23: Tom Swift or Jackson Trengrove or Jordan Lisle
Pick 39: If we get swift at #23 go for a KPB
Pick 55: Project Ruckman
Thanks to Ant555 for the very detailed draft profiles, haven't seen anything like them before, the phantom draft is alive and well in my dreary office block due to your work. Very Impressive.

Pick 5 - Michael Hurley - We need a key defender more than anything else and he's clearly the best available. Saw him when he played in SA and he was just a class above the rest.
Other Options: Sidebottom, Ziebell, Hartlett
Lovett Pick 12-21 - Tom Swift - I'm hoping we either get Sydney's 12 or Freo or West Coasts 18/20/21 for Lovett. With this pick we need a midfielder. From what I've heard this kid is the best bet. Should we not get Hurley with 5, Trengrove would be the one to go for or another key defender.
Other Options: Trengrove, Robinson, Suban, Blease
Pick 23 - Matthew Broadbent - Another player to bolster our defence. I was reading about him in the SANFL grand final footy record and he seems like a very good player. Plays third tall and rebounds. After losing Jphns, Lee and Michael this year as key backs I think we need at least two in this draft. Having Ryder, Pears, Hurley, Hooker and Broadbent as key back hopefuls means that even if a couple don't make it/play better as forwards we are still in a very good position in regards to defence.
Other Options: McKernan, Roughead, Heyne
Pick 39 - Ruckman - Best available. Hopefully Roughead if he's there.
Pick 55 - Best Available.

I would like to see us get Sidebottom and Yarran with our first 2 picks and then a KPP and Ruckman after that.
How would we get pick 12?
Sydney would be crazy to give that up for Lovett.

I was impressed at the Telstra Dome, and I think that he looks to be a better fit for our midfield than Ziebell.

Lol - pick 71.
The club won't even bother with it.
We'll take 5 ND picks. Depending on the draft period, I'd hope to get a better pick & not have to use 71
Personally (& fully accepting I don't have any idea, especially after the first round):
5 The closest to "ready made" mid out there: Sidebottom
23 The mid-sized half forward - there's a bit of a gap there in our list IMHO: Schoenmaker
39/55/71: 1 ruck, 1 tall defender, 1 back pocket/tagger
If we get another 1st rounder - take a tall forward: Trengove
I have a much stronger opinion on our list balance than draftees.
