Name your favourite win when we shouldn't have....

A couple come to mind for me personally.

1981 about rnd 5 at the Junction against Richmond. We were wooden spooners in 1980, they were premiers. We got up by under a goal.

Early 90s. Rnd 22. West Coast on top. Us on the bottom. The infamous "we've got nothing to lose" speech from our boys to the Coolers players before the game.

Whats your own personal fav?

I remember being at Optus in 1989 against Geelong whereby we were 5 goals down at 3/4 time and looked in a hopeless position even 10 minutes into the last quarter however we somehow managed to come back and win by a point.
I think it was Kevin Caton who kicked a point with seconds to go to put us in front.
I also remember another game about the same time in which we played Melbourne at Optus and were down at half time by about 4 goals and came back to win easily with Richard Osborne kicking 11 goals in what was probably the best half of footy i ever saw from a Fitzroy side.
Does anyone have any details of these 2 games?

Fitzroys win against Adelaide in 1995. Talk about unexpected. They had the most explosive last quarter and totally blew the Crows away to the disgust and dismay of the FOoty Park crowd. Mind you, there woulda only been 10,000 people left at the end of the game...the Crows ''supporters'' poured outta the ground in the last quarter.

Cleaning up eventual premiers Hawthorn by one point, twice, in 1978.

Knocking over the top o' the ladder Swans at the SCG in 1987 sans Roos and Pert.

Beating Essendon at Windy Hill in late '86 to reignite our finals hopes and then repeating the dose two weeks later in THAT Elim Final.

The opening round win over Carlton at PP in '93 when we came from four goals down at the last change to win by a Michael Dunstan goal.

Plenty more.

Was it the 1978 night grand final when we creamed North?

Never thought we had a chance against a super team.

Got a preview of the Roys over the next eight years.

The latter is my favourite game of all time, rd 18 1989 princes Park, down 27 pts half time, Melb kicked 1st goal of 3rd quarter (margin 33 pts), then we kicked 10 goals in that quarter (to melb's total of 3 for quarter), and then went on to win 42 pts.

Osborne kicked 6 in that 3rd quarter. He brought up his 500th career goal, i think, when he kicked his 10th. Roos, Lynch, Baldwin, Duane Rowe, Billy McCormack, there was no lack of stars.

got the last 15 minutes minutes of the 3rd quarter on video tape (from The Big League, or whatever it was called at that stage).

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned, but what about the North Melbourne game at Optus circa 1993, where we were down by 6 goals at half time and came storming back to win comfortably. I should have been studying for exams but as I heard the first few minutes on the radio, I decided I may as well go as the radio completely distracted me from studying anyway. Hopped on a train from Ringwood, got to the game at half time, we were six goals down and I was feeling like a complete idiot. Needless to say I saw the good half of the game. And I passed my exams anyway.

Another one that sprang to mind was the 8 goal towelling of the undefeated million dollar Roos at Arden St. in '79. Signalled the arrival of the Roys as a power that season. Even Cornesy played for North that day!

Beating reigning premiers Essendon in Round 2, 1994. It was also T.Watson's 300th.

After losing a number of experienced star performers from the previous year, the Roys fielding half a side of virtual rookies and got up to win a great game.

Amongst some good individual efforts on the day, B.Boyd was the outstanding BOG with 3 goals and 30-40 touches.

One of our class of '94 also received a Rising Star Nomination for the game as well (either Johnson, Barker or Molloy).

Although none of us were around to see it, you'd have to rank the series of wins which the Lions recorded in 1916 to win the Premiership as being unexpected.

We'd only won 2 games (and a draw) from a 12 round season (we won our first two games and then drew in the third round, then went on a 9 game losing streak!), and after being on top after the third round, actually ended up finished last.

However, due to the fact that there were only four teams in the competition at the time (due to war), the Roys automatically qualified for the finals and then went undefeated in the finals series, first beating Collingwood, and then knocking Carlton off twice in consecutive weeks, despite them only losing 2 games for the season previous.

Round 1, 1979.

I couldn't remember ever beating Collingwood, let alone at Victoria Park.

I think we won by about 80 points, and I remember my Mum saying to not be too enthusiastic about our win until we got onto a Frankston line train at Flinders Street.

We had a lot of surprise wins that year, even a surprise loss in Round 22 that cost us the double chance.
