'Follows the flock' my arse. I saw Mahney play most of his games and the guy was a champion thug. I can only vote for the player I saw most of that lot, unlike some posters who will vote on reputation alone.
As for the others, if you read the thread title, you will see it mentions 'little thugs'...........or is that too hard a concept to grasp?

'Mate', I'm 6' 2" and 90 kilo's and I'm also a good mate of Alan Stringers. If he's a small bloke, I'd like to see your definition of a big bloke.

Toss up between pig-dog Mahney and the Ant.

Thanks to the Grand Finals of the era, I have very strong memories of the Ant spitting the chewy. So I voted for the Ant over Mahney.

I thought only Glenelg Supporters were Gooses!!!!!!

Forgetful as that idiot was.........

He picked his victims out carefully!!!!!!!

Didnt do much against my team.........

The Day he was sandwiched between Craig Kelly and Macca, then the day he met Brenton Klaebe's boot.......

Then rightfully booed off the ground lying on a stretcher!!!!

North Adelaide and Glenelg were responsible for producing the majority of thugs ......... no doubt!!!!!!!

Good to see Kym Kinnear get a vote. I always thought he was a sniper. But Wayne Mahney was out and out dirty.

Mahney - one of a few - if not the only player, ever, to be reported, found guilty and suspended for kicking. Must have been one of his games when he did not touch the ball so thought he'd kick an opponent.

What a ****er

Easily the most reported and suspended player in the SANFL was Gary McIntosh, I didn't see him playing for either North or Glenelg.
I am amazed that he was left off the list.

Throughout my forty years of following the SANFL it is Norwood first the rest nowhere for thugs.

A bit big to be a little thug. But dirty all the same. Probably turned from dirty to just plain tough in his later years.

Yeh he must be real tough to king hit a 16 yr old while his head is down in a pack of players.
Gutless prick.

When did he hit a 16 Year Old?????

I think McAlmanac's Comment about Garry was correct!!!!!!

How many Thugs have Norwood had over the years mate???

Glenelg: Alan Stringer, Scott Salisbury, Wayne Henwood, Wayne Holst.

North Adelaide: Kym Klomp, Tony Antrobus, Steven Sims.

Actually the year (1987) that Andrew Jarman won the Magarey, he was suspended for a Month for Kicking during the Escort Cup!

Name me some Norwood so called Thugs...........

If your talking Stuart Dew in the 97 Prelim Mate then I think you should have another look at that one.......

Nowhere near a "King Hit"

And he received 1 Match for that!!!!!!!!!

Who is Wayne Holst? His distant relative...David Holst wasn't a thug, he was slow fat centreman.

Yes, I could have included Steven Sims in that poll. Wayne Slattery also comes to mind.

A very impressive list of Norwood thugs there. Add Craig Kelly. I guess they needed them to protect the likes of Roger Splinterd1ck and Chris Fienemann. Francis would have to be one of the biggest snipers in recent memory. His brother was a decent cricketer but loved his own work.

I must admit, I reckon David Holst wasn't averse to dishing it out. But then, every team's got 'em (except Woodville ;) ).

We have all forgotten the Balme brothers, they were specials.

And was Rotten Ralph only a thug when he was at the Bay and in State sides?

Yeah but his missus wasn't! She attacked me at Prossie one day with her brollie!:D

Getting back to the point my vote goes to Mahney. The Ant goes a close runner up.But at least the Ant could play the game!

Stringer wasn't little by any means. But was a sniper renown for a punch in the pack and then going for a sprint down the field!

Went to a birthday bash for Ralph at his place after the boys lost the 87 elim final. His wife booted everyone out at the end of the night. Very scary woman.

This could make the basis for another poll... but Darren Smith would cream it in. He had the "belt an opponent then run away while your mates step up to the fight you just started" honed down to a fine art form.

The ant was a hothead who was nearly always retaliating because he lost his temper so easily. On that basis, Mahney - cold calculating thuggery. But Stephen Sims should definitely have been an option, I would have voted for him if he was in the poll. All you need to do is watch the bloodbath GF again.

Gary Mcintosh is the biggest thug to ever play in South Australia. Dirtiest player ive ever seen. How he won two Magareys is beyond me.

Cant really have him in this poll tho as its for little thugs (or unrecognised thugs i guess).

Mark Power who played for West a few years back used to **** me. The most arrogant little **** ive ever seen. Built like a twig and the most spiteful player ive seen.

One of the Hannam brothers that played for the Eagles. I think Mark. I'll never forget every Port supporter in the members of Footy Park standing up and laughing at him when he did his knee after attempting to knock out Darren Smith. Behind the play..he ran full pelt at Smith, tried to thump him, Smith moved back a bit which saw Hannam misjudge and land awkwardly on his knee, breaking it and missing 12 months of football. Funniest thing ive ever seen.

Wayne Mahney out of that lot but i think i would of voted for Sims, McIntosh & Salisbury before him if given the chance.

12 Oct 2002, 19:47
mahney out of that group but i think salisbury did a bit of damage but one prick i will never forget is a little **** who played for westies in the mid 80s called ray o'reilly who broke ants collarbone late in the 86 season total little prick!!!

How come noone has brought up the name Dave Granger in this poll? Made Macca look like a choir boy. But out of that lot definitely Wayne Mahney. And Brodie Atkinson's short arm jabs on the outer wing in the first quarter last week was sniping at it's very best...
Ahhh...at last a Blues side that won plaudits for toughness. About bloody time too!

:D

I couldn't agree more. He didn't stay around long enough to really make his mark but he was one of the best snipers I have ever seen.

I can't beleive Steven Sims and Scott Salisbury didn't get in the poll. Ask all the Westie supporters out there and they would all vote for Sims. And Salisbury was a little bastard. As for Antrobus, I wouldn't call him a thug. He was just angry.
