View Full Version : Adam Simpson
I don't know what's happened to Daphne's idea of having a topic on each player. It might have started as a part of the war between the Roos and Bears http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif boards, but I thought they were perfectly valid threads with some interesting responses, so I've taken the liberty of continuing where Daphne left off.
Today's player is Adam Simpson. Go sick, Roos fans - I will chime in after I've filled the main boards up with shit like I do every morning http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/smile.gif

Adam Simpson - gets a lot of the pill, is hard at it but his disposal isn't great. Extra pressure was put on him with Stevo's injury last year and I think, in general, he came through. This year is a big one for him but hopefully Smith and, possibly, Harris will provide more depth in the midfield ranks.
Simmo is fantastic in close. Very athletic which makes him dangerous at set pieces ie. boundary throw ins and ball ups; so often used by Pagan to come over the top and get the ball rolling our way.
Very good hands, strong mark for his size. Has good stamina hence finishes games strongly. Mentally seems good, reads the play well and is very disciplined.
His weakness which is blatantly obvious, is his disposal by foot. Has probably the worst disposal of any established midfielder in the competition. Which after at least 5 pre seasons at the club won't improve. At least though he can kick 50 meters, and rarely goes short. Hence when he turns the ball over at least it its 50+ meters away.
Crucial too our chances of winning the flag, he must have a big year; becasue he is vital to our chances of breaking 50/50 out of the centre square.

Good call Shack and IM think that you both have it spot on... I liked the work Simmo did on Buckley in round 6 last year... still a little inconsistent but should improve... another notch this year...

I refer you to an old thread - "Simpson - The Next John Blakey?"

i'd like to see simmo starting on a hb flank alternating with david king in the middle.
I think Simmo's disposal problem ,while evident, can be minimised by specifying his role. As Shack pointed out, as least the ball travels 50 metres before a potentiual turnover. Simpson is also one of the main avenues forward, ranking very highly most seasons in the stats for getting the ball inside the 50 metre arc. With a player like Carey in the goal mouth, Simpson's disposal need not be 100% spot on. Carey is practically unbeatable in any contest where the ball is in the air within around 10-15 metres if there is sufficient space to follow the ball. Ideally, of course, this would be avoided if Simmo can fine tune his kicking skills.
Simpson is one of our key midfielders in getting the ball out of ruck contests, and this may be even more important now that we have lost the centre-clearance ability of Peter Bell. Simmo's season 2000 may not have been as good as 1999, but some people on the official forum have written him off as being a fringe player this year based laregly on his kicking (and the influx of new midfield talent), and I think it's a bit early for that.

~kewlest players round!!!
Thanks Darky for taking over. I think Simmo does a great job he keeps the big names quiet, who will forget how he did his job on Nathan Buckley at the G the first time we played them last season, and then on Saturday night just in case you didnt know he kept Peter Matera quiet for most of the night, didnt see a lot of him but didnt see much of Matera either.
Good player good bloke . Always goes in but his kicking is always a bomb. Good that it is a 50m bomb though. Stops alot of so-called superstars quite easily.
Go the Skull !!!

Disposal is his only query, and occassional lapses in concentration and vigour are a concern.
But he is a very good player who can also be dangerous up forward although he is rarely used there.
Will be a good player for a long time.
