With the severity of the injury to Jaques it will be interesting to see what happens in the tests on Australian soil. Will Simon Katich be able to cement a spot in the side as an opener or will a youngster like Shaun Marsh be given an opportunity in the test team? Will be inetersting to see what pans out.

Not good news for Jaques... only realistic chance to get back into the squad for England would be if Haydos retired. I don't think a back injury of that magnitude will allow him to play before the end of the season or be available for SA tour.

Shaun Marsh will be given the slot.

Selectors think extremely highly of him, he scored a mountain of runs in all forms of domestic cricket last year, and has dominated opening in ODI and T20 internationals.

Cannot see the selectors continuing with the Katich opening experiment once back on home soil.

Massive blow.

I don't think some people realise how good he was in his first 1-2 years of cricket representing Australia.

Hopefully Marsh gets a gig somewhere along the line.

The only thing is that Shaun Marsh hasn't done a lot of opening in test cricket for WA has he?

There's no need for drastic change at the top just yet.

Katich is hardly out of form, it's more or less the fact that he's unfashionable which hurts him in the public eye.

What's more, Hayden has plenty of credits left in the bank.

Phil Hughes certainly isn't hurting his chances right now (Currently on 170*).

Would they go for someone that young? I did see him last summer, and he was pretty classy for virtually a kid.

Don't throw Hughes into the deep end just yet, it could scar him for life. Needs another 2-3 seasons at state level, at the very least.

Looks like Hayden and Katich will have the two Tests against NZ and the three Tests in Oz against the Saffas.

It's all very well to talk about Marsh coming in, but the Kiwis are shit.

Hayden and Katich will fill their boots in November and then survive at least until the end of the home series against South Africa.

Does anyone seriously think we will head to England with Shaun Marsh opening the batting?

If we want to go down that path, then Marsh needs to be opening against South Africa at some stage in that six-Test series.

I can't see us ditching an experienced bat for Marsh heading into an Ashes series.

Katich and England bring back some memories.

Flintoff and the other pace bowlers will be licking their chops.

He might last for this Test series, and maybe one or two more if he's lucky - but highly doubt the likelihood of him taking on England in the Ashes

If Katich goes OK against NZ and SA in Australia, are we going to drop him for Jaques when we tour SA?

Jaques will have to churn out some runs on the domestic circuit if he's going to regain his spot, but they (the selectors) recently seem to be selecting players according to the conditions (ala Katich, Krejza, not selecting Casson).

Perhaps they'd fancy Jaques or somebody else on the South African pitches which are usually pacemen friendly with variable bounce? Who knows.

Plenty of if's and buts until then - we'll probably look back on this in a months time and think about how blind sighted or unknowing we were after individual player performances. Seems to be a common theme ;):p

Terrible news for Jaques. Looks pretty comfortable at International level. Still, gives someone else an opportunity.

So we are stuck with Katich opening for the forseeable future?

In that case onboard the Shaun Marsh bandwagon :thumbsu:

Would rather we played a youngster with promise than a proven 34 year old dud who is not an international class player.

Too fat, too old, too slow. Time to get rid of Hayden and move on. He's been an embarrassment on this tour of India, with his batting and mouth.

I don't think you can drop a guy posting those numbers.

I don't think there's any guarantee Shaun Marsh would do better. Far from it - he'd probably do worse.
