Anyone else going to check this out. It's a horror film set on the West Coast of Tasmania around the Pieman River and has plot links to the 19th century convict cannibal Alexander Pearce (The Pieman) and the Tassie Tiger.

Spent quite a few years living on the West coast, so this should be pretty interesting. :p The trailer looks pretty cool too.
Have been following this for a while now, ever since I knew Leigh Whannell was going to be in it.
Looks like a bit of mix of The Hills Have Eyes and Sweeney Todd, should be very good.
Really looking forward to it.

Is this an Australian horror film or just based here?

Australian, so in other words don't waste your money going to see it at the movies, wait until it's a "weekly" at your video store.

Wolf Creek was pretty good.

So in about 3 weeks? Lol. I was excited about it until I found out it was an Australian movie, which is pretty sad.
Australian, so in other words don't waste your money going to see it at the movies, wait until it's a "weekly" at your video store. It has some good talent in the movie, and there have been a few alright Aussie Horrors, Undead, Rogue and Wolf Creek are a few that spring to mind.
However the storyline goes it wont be as horrific as the real life Cannibal Pearce. A tour of Port Arthur, you can feel the cold & spooky. Pearce apparently convinced weaker inmates to escape so he could eat them. No doubt would have given Ed Gein a chuckle.
Horror, or any type flicks like this cost triple the amount to make in the US. Quality wise their ok. Good for the industry in Australia.

HA HA, you are kidding, they were all crap. All the Aussie movies have been crao, but at least some have been funny, they were so bad, Like the Cars that ate paris & Razorback. :D
By the way, my son wites movies, he was told his scripts are too scary for Australian audiences.

If you enjoyed Wolf Creek, then you will most likely enjoy this. Whilst the story is obviously completely different, it shares the same sort of themes and story structure. It's a very similar build-up to Wolk Creek in that the first half of the movie is the main characters travelling and setting up the back story, whilst showing a lot of panaromic views of the land etc. Also deals with similar stereotypes, everyone living in the outback/bush is backward and all the towns are creepy and not openly to vistors/tourists. Which may or may not be true.:p Then the main action pretty much happens in the last half of the movie.
Whilst I wouldn't say it was ground breaking by any stretch of the imagination, it's very well acted and shot. I guess the big interest for me was that a lot of the scenery and landmarks, like the barge to cross the river and train bridge etc, were shot at Corinna, which was very close to where I used to live. Didn't eat their pies or see any Tigers though.:p
Also interesting to note, there is another movie in production about the Pieman called The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1099204/). As chesson said earlier, this will probably be more horrific.
In the only review I've seen Leigh Paatch gave it one star, and was pretty scathing. Made it sound like an el cheapo job by a bunch of amateurs. Though Paatch is a hack and usually whines like an old woman when things get violent.
