My dad thinks you can watch Ten HD, Seven HD etc on a regular standard def TV, all you need is a HD Set Top box. Except you don't get the HD quality. I'm no good with all these gadgets and whowhackys, but this didn't sound right. Is he right?

So to those in the know, is their any difference in picture quality between a SD TV with a set-top box compared to a HD TV?

Well it won't be High Definition.

Yeah the HD stuff looks clearly better to me on my SD plasma.

I can't tell the difference between Channel 7 and Channel 70 on my plasma screen.
Except maybe the regular channels are a bit louder than the HD ones.

So on a standard def TV with no 1920x1080 capability, HD (with a set top box) is clearly sharper than a normal channel? I would've figured they'd be the same as they're both the same resolution aren't they? But then I've never tried it.

Actually I want to clarify that...A lot of the time looks clearly better. The American sports on 10 HD look great and some of the docos also look fantastic. But thinking about it there are other times when the difference is not nearly so noticeable.

I think some of the shows they shoot in HD might generally be more photographic and more spectacular. Maybe that makes HD appear better seem better than it really is (if that makes any sense :))

There is a technical reason (can’t be bothered Googling it) why HD will look somewhat better on SD.

Think I have created enough havoc here...
