The pre-season focus in 2008/09 will be on attention to detail according to new football operations manager, Paul Hamilton. “Our focus will be on getting all the little things right so, say, in the weights room we will make sure that every exercise we do, we do it in the right manner and in the right form required.
“It’s clearly going to be our pre-season focus, it’s what Stuart Cormack is about as a high performance coach, it’s what Matthew Knights is about as a head coach and we want to make it an ingrained part of our players’ behavior. We want them to pay real attention to detail in everything they do - that involves conditioning, skill, game learning, whatever they do.”
Pre-season kicks off with two days of testing and medical examinations starting on Wednesday, 5th November, before the hard-slog begins on Friday at Latrobe University.
“There will about 14 sessions a week which involves skills, rehabilitation, conditioning, weights and game learning. It’s a fairly heavy program in many ways but we expect our players will come back from their break in good physical condition,” Hamilton said.
“Stu (Cormack) got the team together five weeks ago to outline his and Matthew Knights’ expectations for their return and they have had programs to work on.
“We have a number of players coming back from injury so they have been on, and will remain on, adjusted programs during pre-season so if they can’t kick much, for example, they will focus on other things like game-learning and decision-making.”
Hamilton said the playing list is very enthusiastic about starting training and there have been many players coming into the gym during their break.
“They are raring to go,” he said.
“With such a young list we need to progress our young players in the area of strength and conditioning and we feel we have a terrific team on board in that area. I ran into people from another club recently and they were amazed with the people we have been able to attract and the expertise that we have been able to bring to the club.
“Stu Cormack is already heading up the department while our new physical preparation assistant, Denise Jennings, starts next week and she has excellent qualifications having worked with the Australian and Victorian Institutes of Sport.
“There is also Mark Cera who was with us last year but has had his position re-defined. He will still be involved in rehabilitation but will also work on our players sprinting and agility which is exciting for us. We have a new dietician starting next week and we also have a number of PHD and Honors students from the University of Ballarat working with the club on key areas of sports science.
“We are really pleased with our staffing personnel and we have no doubt that we have the expertise required to build up our players from a size and weight point of view, and plenty of work has also gone into the program to improve their conditioning and skills.”

I'll be there (unfortunately for study purposes). My guess is they'll either be running around the ring road (road that links all the car parks in the Uni) or over the road at the footy oval for anyone who might be interested in having a look.

http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=6151Pre-season testing of Essendon players began today at the State Netball Centre in Melbourne.

Bomber.tv caught up with reigning Crichton Medalist, David Hille, who said that the first lot of two-days of testing was tough.

Hille said that he relaxed for the first few weeks after the season but has been doing weights, swimming, biking, running and even surfing to stay fit and be ready for pre-season.

“We did some testing similar to a beep test this morning, we’ll do a beep test tomorrow and we have some other testing this afternoon so it’s pretty full on,” he said.

The team will hold its first official pre-season training session on Friday at La Trobe University.

The training will be a skills session while the injured players will undergo rehabilitation and conditioning session.

The Bombers will have approximately 14 training sessions per week during the pre-season focusing on skills, fitness, conditioning and game learning.

I was watching the highlights on BomberTV and noticed that Fletch was in attendance and doing the beep test etc. Surely he has earned the right to have an extended break and take care of his own fitness (like Hirdy)? The man is a machine.

I'm guessing he probably enjoys training with guys. It will be interesting to see how long he can keep his fitness up, I still reckon he could play a few more years yet if he so desired.

Pretty sure that Fletch has said that this will be his last year.

I don't think he would be able to go on even if he wanted to, he struggled last year with niggling injuries in his knee and groin and is nearing 34.

Sadly I agree. This year will most likely be Fletch's last.:( His 300th this year will be great though.
