In the first Test starting today, South Africa batted first and struggled throughout the first day's play to reach a disappointing 2/369 at stumps.

Can't wait for Bangladesh to play Australia in a Test match. Should be enthralling.

What a joke. I can't believe the ICC folded to the Asian countries and let them in. Kenya would be far more competative than that rabble.
I hope we do play them soon, we need the points on the World Championship table, and Steve Waugh needs a hundred against another country!

I must admit, I lived in Bangladesh for a year and they do love their cricket but the ICC should have thought it through a bit more.
There should be a certain criteria for skill level/development programs in place before a country is worthy of Test Status. I can't see Bangladesh actually winning a Test in the next 4 years! They have some degree of ability in the One-Day arena but they are definately not on the same level as say Sri Lanka or the West Indies (whom I consider as the worst out of the 'good' teams).

The problem isn't so much Bangladesh being given status, as arguably it was the only way in which the standard and profile of cricket would be raised in that country. The problem really lies in the Test championship table.
It really is pointless and futile matching the likes of Australia and South Africa against the minnow countries. Given the very long period over which the championship is played out, I would have thougt it would be better that you only play matches against teams that are within two or three rankings of your own ranking. Every year would feature at least one series where the prize would be top spot. The result would be closer and more competitive contests as well as giving minnow nations (and why not include Kenya, Canada Netherlands etc) the chance to win some matches and improve their own standards.

It's hardly surprising they struggled early in their Test-playing era. But it must be a matter of concern for them that after quite a few Tests there's no sign of any improvement.

And the final word on that Test is that South Africa won easily. After scoring 4/529dec, South Africa bowled Bangladesh out twice for 170 and 252 to win by an Innings and 107 runs.
Have seen nothing of Bangladesh apart from the 1999 World Cup, would dare say the greater concern would be over their bowling. They had pie-throwers when they played Australia at the last WC, and it doesn't seem much has changed.
If people wish to remember back a few years I will give you some reminders.
Sri Lanka - when they came in as a fully fledged test nations everyone was flogging them. I would've said even the Kiwis but they had Haddle and Crowe at the time.
Zimbabwe - another team that has taken a while to become competitive, and still struggling now (I don't think the govt helps though).
Bangladesh will improve but it will take a few more years for them to be competitive. Remember they are playing the second best Test team in the world away from home at the moment. Look we are flogging Pakistan and they are supposed to be good so don't pick on them too much they will improve.

I still shudder at the memory of staying up into the wee hours watching the telecast of the 1983 World Cup match in which they beat us...and unless I'm mistaken have never repeated the result?

Yes, I do believe that Kenya would've been a better option for Test Admittance, but Bangladesh has one thing going for it and that is a larger base of Cricketers to choose from and a bigger supporter base.
Remember that it took years for the Sri Lankans to be competitive in the test arena, and now they aren't a bad side, give Bangladesh some time, money, and some good coaching (something that Austraila SHOULD BE HELPING THEM WITH), and they will improve, but it's going to take a while

Correct. Though they went scarily close last time we played them, at Perth. Doug Marillier getting two arsey fours through fine leg off McGrath in the last over. They ended up needed 5 off 3 balls, got 3 singles and lost by one run.
Too right about Kenya, easily the better side. Their head to head record in one-day internationals is Kenya 5 Bangladesh 1.
Add to this upset wins against West Indies (in the world cup), and India twice.
Bangladesh have only had one upset win and that was against Pakistan in the last world cup in what was a dead rubber.
They're in the same pool in the next world cup, so that should be interesting. And not just because it means they can both thump Canada.
Cricket is expanding very well, and i think the ICC are doing a good job of it.
Kenya will be a part of International Test Cricket, and I think it will be sooner rather than later despite the ICC's 10 year program. That will change.
Cricket is going to be one of the sports of this century i believe. Along with RUgby Union, it will be the big movers in the sporting industry.
