View Full Version : Who is the AFL's most famous club?
Roh, you're not going to get many arguments on the Collingwood board.
Or did you post this elsewhere and it got moved...:D
Not to sure about that mate. On another board you put down how may GF's youve won since WW2, did you look at that? And do you still think your are the biggest club with 1 flag in what, 40 years???
Famous for losing a premiership every 4.41 years.

Which p r i c k of a team did we beat for that flag again?
Thanks moron!
Tony Jewell was the coach and if you have forgotten, we beat you guys to keep your average up. Can't let that impressive statistic drop. 80 odd points.
Trivia Q who were the minor premiers that year?
Geelong
Ritchmond, famous for having the worst supporters in the league.
How many times have they torn up thier memberships? plenty.
They are the most fickle lot of supporters i have ever come across. Win a couple of games at the start of the season and they are flag certainties as far as they are concerned. Reality soon bites though.
The thing with Collingwood is that they are good enough to get to the granny, just not good enough to win it. ritchmond on the other hand just arent good enough!! How many wooden spoons have ritchmond won in the last 20 years? 2 or 3?
If Collingwood had won all those granny's that they have lost the competition would be called the Collingwood Football league. ;)
MGREG, not sure if you realise but this is 2002. I was in year 7 in 1990. Alot of changes in 12 years mate, oh sorry, there hasnt cause another medicore collingwood team made the GF again, this time the best team of the year won it! And since 1990, ive seen two flags, that beat's your club's average of 1 every 40 so think about it mate! Most successful club, yeah right.

Peruka, can't you read? You have now discussed the merits of Collingwood being the 'biggest' club and the 'most successful' club, in a thread asking about the most FAMOUS club!!!! Flags have nothing to do with it! But if you travelled overseas and asked anyone about Aussie Rules Footy, I bet they've all heard of Collingwood cos we are the most FAMOUS club.

You'd probably have to explain where Aust. is first. I suspect most of the world has never heard of Aussie Rules.

Congratulations, you had enough intelligence do get into high school, dont know if you came out the other end, doubtlessly you'll tell us though the relevance of what you were doing in 1990 is as relevant as any point you are attempting to make.
If you want to talk mediocre look at the 1993 Essendon side.
Just cos Collingwood is the only team do go thru a home and away season with a perfect record doesnt mean you should be jealous.
Now **** off to your own board, this is a Collingwood board.

I have seen a bit of the world and i have taken my Pies jumper with me and people know i am Australian when i wear it. They also know that it is an Aussie rules side. Some of the ways that they pronounce Collingwood is amusing but they do know who they are and what game they play.

Collingwood had one lucky hell of a season ....no injuries allyear no wonder it looked like niagra falls with all the tears ...they all know it wont happen again this life time.
Once more the tiges will kick start the season with a ripping win against the pies ......and you wont be lucky enough to catch us with our seconds side in like this year when only first win in last 10 encounters .....
good luck pies youll need every bit of it once more

No injuries? Luck? So I suppose it was just luck that we beat Port Adelaide in the qualifying final over there without our captain, Nathan Buckley. And I guess osteitis pubis isn't an injury either? We had 5 of our senior players suffer from it?
Looks like we'er still not getting the respect we deserve from some people. Maybe when we win the flag next year this guy will actually notice that Collingwood has things his mob never will: talent, potential, skill and determination.

Without a doubt...
There is no sporting club more famous in Australia than Collingwood...
For choking.

Melbourne for mine. Simply because they were the first club, and are the oldest sporting club in the world.

Ask a stupid question, jonathon.e answers...
Now Mase, thats a fair answer, but try this test:
1)Name the Collingwood and Melbourne B&F medals.
2)Repeat the words of both Club's song. Which do you know better?
3)Name both Club's Presidents.
You have to think harder to recall things about Melbourne because they're less famous. Eddie alone has boosted our fame to new heights, but even before him, the Pies made the news more than any other club. Most supporters know a bit about their own mob, a bit less about the Pies, and then a smidgen about the rest.

You have a fair point in that regard.
I know most of the clubs songs word for word though, especially Collingwoods as I have played with a Magpies team for say around 10 years.
You do have a fair point though. Famous wise, as in world wide would have to be Melbourne.
But in Australia it is probably Collingwood, as they would be the most well known club in Australia.
But who really cares anyway ;)
No injuries huh. Buckley 5 weeks Hamstring 1 week suspended.
Burns suspended. Tarrent injured 1 week. Malloy out most of the year. Scotland OP missed start of season. Davis OP missed a month. Freeborn out 2 weeks. Holland 3 weeks hamstring. Cloke suspended in the big one.
And there are probably others that I have missed.

Looking at that list - Buckley appears to be the only decent player there - well any of the others would not make top 5 at any other club .
As far as fame goes i was stopped by a guy in the states once and asked what i knew about the crows as there was a piece on tv there about that aussie astronaunt taking a crows scarf into space.
I guess the only collingwood things in space were the players who went missing in the granny ....

You'd know, being out there with the other cadets...;)
PeeJay - So in your tiny opinion no other club would take Burns, Tarrant, Scotland.
So have you followed footy fot long?

Didn't say that - I said they would not be in the top 5 at any other club.
All clubs have injuries but i would say that other than buckley the other players listed were not more a loss to coll. as any other teams injured players were.
I have been going to the footy week in week out for 27 years, seeing as you asked.

If you are talking worldwide coverage it has to be Footscray.
Wheels wore a 'scrays jumper on an episode of Degrassi Junior High - old VFL sew on patch and all. That ended up being shown across the USA, as well as Canada the numerous re-runs would mean it would have to win yeah?
But seriously it clearly has to be Collingwood.
Best club, best supporters, and now most famous. :)
Also will be remembered for saving the reputation of the finals series in 2002.
