56.3 McGrath to Waqar Younis, OUT: 400 for McGrath! Trapping the pakistani skipper lbw, playing across the line to a ball that started back in, would have taken out middle and off stump, a great moment for the tall fast bowler - 400 Test wicket

One of the all-time great bowlers.
And an overall better bowler then the great DK Lillee.

Agreed. IMHO, Australia's greatest ever bowler.

The thing that puts McGrath above Lillee in my opinion is their comparative records in the sub-continent.
McGrath's record in this region is exceptional, while Lillee's was limited and very poor. Lillee's only full tour of the sub-continent was to Pakistan in 1979/80, and he had a very poor time of it, not getting a wicket until the Third Test.
In fact, Lillee took it so badly that he wasn't available to tour Pakistan in 1982. While the pitches were obviously tailored for the spinners, this was a pretty weak effort on Lillee's part, an attitude that would be unthinkable in Australian cricket today.

Great effort!! He is one of Australia's best ever bowlers IMO! :D
Doesn't feel like that long ago I saw him get his 300, in the middle of his hat-trick at the WACA!
Can he get 500? On current form I can't see why not.

Is this the first time a Test XI had two bowlers with over 400 test wickets?

No in the fourth and fifth tests against England in 2000 Ambrose (who took his 400th wicket in the fourth test) was playing alongside Walsh who had also had 400 wickets to his name (He actually had 472 wickets coming into the 4th test and took 11 wickets in those 2 tests).
Those were Ambrose's final 2 test matches.
If i can be bothered i might make a list later of matches which had teammates with 300+ wickets or if thats going to be too long maybe 350+ wickets.
And here it is, for no other reason than im bored out of my mind on a Tuesday night. Here is the list of all the matches which have had two players in the same team who have finished a match on 300 or more wickets.
These are listed in partnerships, and in chronological order of test matches. The figures after the test is the number of wickets each bowler finished that test match with.
Courtney Walsh and Curtley Ambrose (West Indies): 27 Tests
1st Test v Sri Lanka 1996/97 (Ambrose 303 - Walsh 333)

Special mention must also go to Bob Willis and Ian Botham. Bob Willis played his final test in the 3rd test against West Indies in 1984. Ian Botham picked up his 300th wicket in the 5th test of that series, so those two went very close to joining the above list.

Well done to "Oh Ah" Glenn McGrath. I think that he will one day overtake Warne in wickets taken for Australia.

Great Effort by the "Pigeon" - reckons he wants to aim for 450 and then who knows! I had heard previously he thought he might have had only a couple of seasons left in him.
BTW - have a look at this group at yahoogroups..
