For me personally no, I think they should have destroyed us 3 or 4 nil. In saying that we are not currently the best test nation either. The South Africans might finally get the mantle by the end of this summer.

Who cares, the series is over, will be forgotten in a week with our home summer starting.

Punter to score bulk runs this summer, really feel for him to be honest, the poor bastard has had a useless bowling attack and then yesterday it went a bit pear shaped but to be honest, the best we could have hoped to bowl India out for would be 280 - 300 and there was no way we'd get that on a 5th day wicket.

A poll on the daily telegraph says 65% of people think he should be sacked as captain, looks like the bowlers will get off unscathed and Punter will take all the heat, hopefully he comes out firing.

Next time he gets interviewed on ABC Grandstand should be interesting, it is obvious they dont like Ponting.

Anyway, its all over,

I always understood the accepted convention to be beating the best team at home and away. Kind of like how no-one really acknowledged Australia's ascendence until the series win in the West Indies in the mid 90's.

In the past 6 matchs, we havent beaten India.

South Africa probably can lay claim to that now. India's challenge of this will all depend on how they recover from losing

No they are not. But the Saffers will be if they beat us this summer.

If Warne, Langer, Mcgrath and Gilchrist were still playing we'd have beaten this side - their old timers have just hung on longer than ours.

When you look at that, India really have underachieved in the past 10 years, never really dominated world cricket when with those champion players should have inflicted alot more damage all over the world.

I am really looking forward to seeing South Africa this year. I hope they play some top attacking cricket will be very exciting to watch.

Were India number one when they beat us in 2001?

I don't think so.

So why would they be number one now?

Were England number one when they beat us in 2005?

Umm... no.

Historically they are incapable of winning series on foreign soil... so cannot even be remotely considered until this happens on a regular basis.

Having said that I think they have the talent to get there under Dhoni's leadership, depends if the players are crushed under the nation's manic expectations.

considering that after the 2004 series in India we had a winning record against every single team, home and away, it would be very ****ing rich to say India are even remotely close.

nope

they've never won a World Championship.

in this sport you can't be "champions",, the number one team, or whatever, by winning Two matches, TWO matches.

didn't they lose to Sri Lanka recently though? and they still haven't beaten Australia in Australia. still have to win more consistently than that i'm afraid

If RSA knock us off at home they'll claim the mantle, but I doubt that.

India have to beat us on our home turf first.

When was the last time India won a series in Australia?

They can't call themselves champions before they do so.

I don't think they actually have.

Really, no one will be "number one" until they win a test series on Australian soil. Australia losing an away series doesn't mean India are any where near the number one team - I've always thought that the real "test champions" are the ones who beat the best team on foreign soil.
