View Full Version : Why isn't st kilda desperate to keep spider?
Proven Match winner. Top 5 ruckman in comp. Goal kicker and great for the promotion of your club.
Is he over payed?
Maybe making room for the expected increases that the new tall timber will need to be payed in years to come?
Even so, he soon could be put on the veterans list.

it is fair to say, the issue of spider has polarised the saint fan community.
i know that i go through periods where i say keep him, others i say ***** him off. currently i am in the latter. i think he is over rated. hasnt played his best footy since 97, needs to learn to take any mark, i will settle for an uncontested grab first and then allow for him to work his way up to taking a contested grab. gets bodied off the ball too easily, and seems to sulk when things are not going his way.
all in all, he is a top 5, but then plugger was a no.1., maybe a change of scenery will freshen him up! and hopefully we get something in return to continue building our dynasty.

I think Philip has covered it pretty well.
I've been one of the few saints fans (from what I gather watching us play and through the fan forums) that has always supported keeping Spider but I lost patience towards the end of the season.
His ability can't be questioned. On his day I would go as far as to say he is the best tap ruckman in the league. He has the mobility to play as a leading forward and is a very good shot for goal. His disposal can be very good. He just doesn't seem to be able to take enough contested or overhead marks. However the greatest problem with him is his attitude. When he's being beaten he just drops his head. He also is liable to do something stupid and cost the side through an undisciplined free kick or a 50 metre penalty. With such exciting youngsters coming through, I don't think we can risk them being influenced by someone who doesn't share their level of committment to the club. The fact that he's reportedly on $700,000 doesn't help either. The last straw is that he looks like he wants to leave anyway and has been talking to opposition clubs.
If a suitable trade isn't organised I won't be disappointed if he stays provided he is committed. We've seen before that players who have wanted to leave only not to be traded have been able to play great football afterwards (ie Wayne Campbell). All in all I think it's very responsible for the club to shop him around and try and find a deal suitable to the club. The only problem is that trading him will leave us especially vulnerable in the ruck. Either directly or indirectly we will have to secure another ruckman.

Hoping we get out reasonably well from offloading Spider, and getting much needed salary cap relief in the same breath.
Everitt has proved time & time again he is an uncommitted, egocentric footballer. We don't need that.
Get rid of him. Sets a lousy example to the young blokes by appearing not to try.
He's done nothing for a long time.

Sounds more like a threat to prospective clubs that St.Kilda has the upper hand to me.

yeah it sounds like st kilda dont mind and i think it's got something to do with
1. everitt has stated(?) he will stay with st kilda if not traded to hawks etc..
2. everitt has stated(?) he will take a pay cut if traded
This means that we have the bargaining power.. we dont mind trading him for something decent
OR
Everitt doesn't mind staying and if so he will on a a paycut...
St Kilda wins both ways..
I wouldn't be all that fussed if we got nothing. Would save an awful lot of cash if he just quit.
He is up for trade and Hawthorn will most likely get him
