View Full Version : No untouchables?

We are club with no money, a strategy of developing young players and a shaky future. We are also missing some key position players, and need some real on-field success in the next 3 seasons to survive.

So I find it curious that many posters claim "Oh, we can't trade X player". Perhaps we're all scarred from the Eagleton fiasco, but I think ANY proposed trade should be looked at with an open mind.

In the grossly unlikely event that we were offered players of the calibre of Lloyd or Jonathan Brown for one of our stars, we should consider it. And certainly consider any trades such as Robbins for Hall.

I would take a Lloyd for a West.

Or a Robbins for a Hall (Barry)

I think you do have to take into account with trades what I woudl call the "integrity" of the club (this would apply to any club, not just Dogs). While trading a West or a Grant might get you the player you want I think the effect on the club would go a long way beyond any pros and cons of the individual players concerned. It is for that reason that I dont think you could trade:

West
Grant
Johnson
Brown
Smith

It sends a message that Hawthorn sent when getting rid of Croad and even though I cant quite explain it I think it would be a bad idea.

I tend to agree, you can also chuck Darcy into that list. People often talk about trading West and Smith, yet there are both tremednpous servants of the club who don't deserve to be offloaded

Sometimes players want to go.

Their can be many reasons for that, more money, better opportunity, chasing premierships etc.

The player get traded as a consequence but the full circumstances not revealed to us.

Correct. Sometimes the players can fall out amongst themsleves or they are annoyed with some percieved slight or they havent been payed for almost a season.

Team unity is more important than one star player. Thats basically what your saying, and you are right.

It basically boils down to this: we need a champion team, because we can't afford a team of champions.

If they WANT to go, and the club will release them, and a good trade can be made, then I suppose it's worthwhile.

However, how many top players WANT to come to the Western Bulldogs? Not too many. The ones we get seem to be on their last chance and we are their last resort. :(

I'm not sure if we now have the luxury of this approach - surely on-field success in the next 3 seasons is paramount?

Excellent Point.
Most clubs have a few untouchables but in reality if the right trade come along then it should at least be considered.

I think Robert Murphy is also an untouchable and after next season Sam Power will be as well.

Why?

Surely if we were offered Jonathan Brown or Pavlich for either, we'd take it.

If the right trade came along we would be crazy just to turn it down without giving it due consideration

I wouldn't consider giving a star for Jonathan Brown. He will be good, but I think he's over-rated. He kicked about 14 goals this season

OK, but what if we were offered Pavlich or Riewoldt?

(I know this is not particularly likely:))

dont think anyone will touch Wiggins.

did you hear the story that Peter Rohde caught David Smorgon down the shops with a bag of potatoes > Smorgo was shopping for Wiggins as he was unwell, whats up said Rohde , Smogo replied " I got a bag of spuds for Wiggins "
" Good Trade " replied Rohde " did we have to throw in a draft pick too".

Carlton, they think his brother is a star! Cried for the club in the Geelong loss

Brown was playing with an injury all season but will be a superstar in the mould of a Wayne Carey in the future and i would definately give a star away for the the likes of Brown

I don't see the point of all this.
Of course I would take Pavlich for Murphy
I would also take Matthew Lloyd for Brad Johnson and Michael Voss for Luke Darcy.
It all starts tomorrow when the trades become real and the speculation and dreams can cease.
