The coaches and recruiting staff of all 16 AFL clubs are meeting at Optus Oval as the annual trade fest started on Thursday. Here are some early moves, tips and thoughts from the key figures involved:
* Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams says ruckman Barnaby French is likely to go to Carlton and it’s the player’s preference to make a move to Optus Oval.
* Western Bulldogs recruiting manager Scott Clayton has raised the name of Nathan Eagleton as a trade prospect even though the Bulldogs want to retain the former Port Adelaide player. “We’d like to keep him if we can but he’ll be around the mark,” Clayton said.
* Tiger Jason Torney may stay at Punt Road after all. Richmond assistant coach Greg Hutchison said that was a possibility even though the Tigers are openly chasing Kane Johnson.
* Fremantle coach Chris Connolly said the Dockers remained very keen on Daniel Chick, Des Headland and securing hot draft prospect Daniel Wells. But Connolly said he was still looking forward to coaching Trent Croad, Adam McPhee, James Walker and Leigh Brown – players that have all been touted as potential trades.
* All senior coaches are in attendance except Essendon’s Kevin Sheedy, Richmond’s Danny Frawley and Hawthorn’s Peter Schwab.
Freo if you listen to radio gossip are offering packages of two players for Carltons second pick which they want to on trade to the Lions for Headland. Brown,McPhee and Croad are some of the names mentioned. Another deal involving one player and a draft pick was also put forward. Freo must want Headland real bad, hope they dont give up more than he is worth.

Only that Carlton & Port are going to come up with a deal that will see French in the navy blue next year.

One less ruckman to go around.
Still think we don't need to be that desperate for a discard ruck.

Whoose playing CHF next year, Chops? We've already seen that Bandy cant cut it on his own.
And if Darcy goes down (knock on wood) what will we do then?
Our most pressing need is for ruckman/tall forwards.

Talk is French to Carlton, Keating to Essendon.
That firms up Spider to the Hawks, as they are desperate and willing to pay top dollar.
Does that leave Brogan for us?

Then recruit a CHF not a hack ruck filling in. At the moment we have Skipper, Burton, Wiggins, Penny, etc. give them a go and take a young ruck in the draft. Our pressing need in not a ruck, its a strong forward or backman. How many ruckmen make good forwards or backs? Rather a strong utility that can pinch hit in the ruck than a ruck that pinch hitting at CHF/CHB. Are you under valueing Darcy?
Priority is to keep Penny.

Agreed, but there arent any CHFs available for trade (well, OK there is one :) By all means recruit a KPP in the draft, but thats not going to help us in '03. Which of those 4 mentioned playing for Weribee is ready to step up to CHF? Penny maybe, but he seems to be destined for defence.
The reality is we have to take what we can get, and Id rather have an extra tall option to step into the breach when the occasion demands than not.
Maybe I am undervaluing Skipper, Burton and Wiggins because I havent seen much of them personally, but Im just going on others comments who have seen them play, and the concensus seems to be they arent ready. Certainly Brogan is behind 2 or 3 other options at Port and maybe just needs a chance to be able to proove himself at senior level? Ill let Clayton decide that one...

Rumour is the Hawks are after Hunter in return for a third round draft pick.
I wouldn't even trade Tim Clarke for Hunter, no offence. I just don't rate him.
