McKenna admits: I've talked to Ablett
Brent Diamond | November 23, 2008

FORMER Geelong forward Nathan Ablett is likely to become a development project for AFL's newest team on the Gold Coast.

GC17 coach Guy McKenna has held informal discussions with the 22-year-old and is eyeing off the Cats' 2007 premiership player as a mature-aged recruit.

Ablett will be 25 when the Gold Coast is expected to begin in the AFL in 2011. He recently signed with the Broadbeach Cats in the AFLQ after moving to the Gold Coast and is reportedly intending to pursue a personal training career.

"We'll be looking at Ablett, just like we will with anyone playing footy on the Gold Coast over the next couple of years," McKenna told The Sunday Age.

"We'll be looking at a number of players at Broadbeach and other clubs and if he (Ablett) fits the bill of what we're looking for at the time and what he's looking for, we'll talk to him and he could be a pretty good recruit for us."

McKenna said the team was already looking in good shape with "future bookends" in the GC17's under-18 development team.

"We're doing pretty well with talls. We think we've got our future bookends and we're seeing a lot of potential out of the guys already," he said.

"It's been hard over the past couple of days because of the torrential rain up here, but we're going along well at the moment."

McKenna said the shy-natured Ablett, selected at No. 49 in 2004 AFL draft under the father-son rule, could become a mentor for some of the younger players in the club's early stages.

"We're by no means near getting him to the club, but say this time next year, we might look at it and sit down with him depending on how he goes," he said.

It is understood Ablett chose to play with Broadbeach because of the club's relaxed atmosphere and lower profile after choosing to retire after season 2007, perhaps needing to escape the spotlight that accompanies the Ablett name, particularly in Geelong.

The AFL is expected to approve the licence of the league's 17th team, despite deferring the announcement at an AFL commission meeting in Sydney during the week while it re-examined the financial modelling in light of the changed economic circumstances.

It did, however, overcome an impasse with the Queensland Government to allow the new club to play all home games - except the local derby against the Brisbane Lions - at Carrara Stadium.

I dont know why, but the word "Overated" comes to mind.

If he nominates for the AFL draft and we use a top 10 pick, I will be gutted.

I would have thought he'd just be a Queensland zone selection if he's still playing at Broadbeach (or anywhere else in the AFLQ).
It's actually pretty smart - a lot can change from when you're 22 to 25. If he gets his head screwed on right, he might be a serviceable player. Still a lot of footy left in him from 2011.

It won't happend. The kid doesn't want to play footy, he never has. He doesn't like the limelight, and that appears to be his choice.

Either did Gary Sr. That's why he quit Hawthorn and went back to the bush, and we all know how that story finished.

As Geelong delisted him this year, he will cost nothing as an uncontracted player. So smile, an Ablett for free!!!!!

If he doesn't like the limelight perhaps the Coast would be a good place to be. Nobody would know him from a bar of soap.

The locals maybe. But you could guarantee that Hutchy would be leading a cavalcade of cameramen and wordsmiths around after him until they get their story and pound of flesh. The Geelong Addy would base a bloke up there for a daily column.
He knows that. Even if it is a bit of an exaggeration, and it's all a little bit in his head, he's shown that he isn't willing to take the chance.
Don't get me wrong. I think he'd make a fantastic inaugural forward pocket. But I just think it is very, very unlikely. It was only a few months ago these pages had him heading for the preisthood.
Oh and npaat_onn.

Retired after less than 50 games so hard to tag him with Overrated.

Even if not be a dominant player for the GC but what they would get is an afl premiership player with some preseasons under his belt and a mature body that can help the young players when they hit the AFL. And add to that he will still only be 25 so if he goes alright and starts enjoying it you would still get 5+ years out of him.

Wouldnt get too sooky about NA.

He has zero committment and got into Geelong by name alone. Committment and Ability I would suggest are two of the biggest factors which make an AFL player.....

An Ablett playing for GC...sounds so unreal. If he is interested it would be madness not to give him a go. He was so young when he left Geelong and there may well be a new maturity that comes with a few years under his belt. Plus the price would be right...he could be our very own Takeover Target!

Indeed. If for no other reason I'd bring him in because of that. He is simply following Gaz Snr's career path.

But it feels like he's wearing nothing at all.
