Can someone please explain how freo will fit dessy into their cap.
I thought they were extremely close to the limit.

Will we see another freo blunder ?

I also thought they were robbed off thier 1st draft pick ??

Sabre said something on the main board about Metro retiring, but apart from that rock-solid source I've seen nothing about it.

We lost our 3rd round pick.

We have enough room if any of the following occur

a) trading an established player (ie. L. Brown, L. Toia, T. Longmuir or J. Walker etc)
b) Metropolis's deal goes through
c) Top players offer to take small pay cuts (apparently there is 140,000 free at the moment so we would need to get that up to abbout 250,000)
d) Headland is desperate to get back to WA and if a deal could be struck and Freo had **** all left in the cap, he would take less money in his first year if he had to and then expect small compensation in the 2nd and 3rd year of his contract.

Don't forget we have gotten rid of:

Kickett
Norrish
Michael (not sure if he was drawing a wage)
Dodd
Fewster
Bootsma
Eastough,

Possibly Toia, Longmuir and Shipp will go as well.

That would have to free up some money.

What they said.

Delistings, retirements, reduced contracts, re-signings of out of contract players at reasonable salaries (which may not have even taken out the annual rise in TPP)- plus a commitment to a (smaller) 34 man squad next year.

Disappointed to lose #21 if the Headland deal happens, but can't really argue with the outcome. We have blown most of our beans however, so there you go.

You can play now.

Freo hasn't got any money freed up at all. They signed Hasleby, Longmuir and Pavlich to huge contracts because they knew those other guys wouldn't be at the club next year. The reason Norrish retired was so some more money could be freed up to keep those three out of contract players.

Kickett was on the veteran's list anyway so half his salary wasn't included. There will be no one to replace him on the veteran's list next year either.

Freo will struggle to fit Headland under the cap, no way they can afford both him and Chick. Headland will want about $250,000 a year as will Daniel Chick. Where do you have $500,000 lying around Freo?

Let's wait and see.

And I wouldn't say Pavlich, Hasleby and Longmuir are on HUGE contracts. They are well looked after, but they would have got way more at other clubs. And do you really believe Hasleby and Longmuir were going to leave?

No I didn't think they were going to leave. But they have taken up a huge chunk of the salary cap.

Bell- $400,000
Croad- $400,000
Farmer- $350,000
Pavlich- $330,000
Hasleby- $290,000
Longmuir- $280,000
Brown- $200,000

That is a huge chunk of the salary cap taken up at Freo. How can they afford another two players on $250,000 a year

Does anyone actually have any reliable figures on what players earn? I very much doubt it. Last year even Cameron Schwab didn't seem to know. That's why it is important for the AFL to police the level playing field.

Freo have a history of overpaying average players and I really have no idea how much cap space is free to attract, say, a Headland.

The other issue I think will come back to bite Freo is this deferred scale of payments, where players get more in the later years of their contracts. Richmond allegedly do it too. I hope the Eagles aren't doing that.

That totals about 2.2 million for 7 players which leaves about 3.7 million .... if the remaining 28 (assuming we end up with 35 players which I think we will), they get an average salary about $132,000... which is pretty reasonable for the middle/fringe players, and the rookies. Especially seeing as though we have quite a few players on a minimum wage.

Also remember to add in the $100 000 the WACA are going to pay Freo for the development of Michael Clark.
