View Full Version : Post our best 22 in your opinion
G'day.
Was bored after reading the "where will we play Chick?" thread, and made my own 22.
Put some thought into it and make your own as well.

Players in the same colours are ones who I think should be rotated with each other.
Obvious midfield rotations have been witheld.
Blokes who missed out:
Carrol
Embley
Gaspar (very stiff to miss out)
Green
Haynes
Humm
Jones (very stiff)
Munro
Prior
Williams
Wooden (very stiff, can't find a spot for him with Chick in the side)
Sampi
It's very hard to squeeze these blokes into 22.
Some players who I think could easily be subbed for the ones who missed out:
Glass
Read
Morrison
McDougall
Chambers
Hunter
Post your best 22 from our current list, including Daniel Chick.

B: Collica McIntosh Green
HB: Hunter Jakovich Wirrpunda
C: Fletcher Kerr Judd
HF: Chick Gaspar Pe. Matera
F: Ph. Matera Wilson Sampi
R: Gardiner Jones Cousins
I: Cox, Chambers, Lynch, Wooden
A side full of youth blended in with experience. Don't shoot me for my opinion but I don't think Braun, Banfield, Read and Morrison will be much good for the WCE any longer, and I see them as passengers/ deadwood. They are better off blooding new talent.
No offence Ozzult, but I think your way off.
Cox in a forward pocket?
Hunter on a HFF?
Cousins in the middle of the ground and not on the ball?
Chick on a HBF?
No Green on Jones in the side at all?
I know we all have our opinions but yours is just alot different to mine :)
Here is my go at it.
FB: Collica McIntosh Wooden
Collica is a certainty and Milli is still good enough to hold down FB for at least one more year. Wooden is my small defender in front of Read because Read is still an unknown coming off back to back reco's. If Read looks like his old self in the pre season then throw him in.
HB: Hunter Jakovich Green
These three looked great last season and I have no reason to change them. Hunter is made to play off half back, Jako is Jako and Green has great poise and is able to play on smalls and talls. Morrison could come into the side but his predicament is the same as Read's.
C: Judd Kerr Fletcher
Judd must start every game now and seen as he is the second coming of Roo, then what better place than a wing. Fletcher is still among our better midfielders and Kerr needs no reasoning.
HF: Chick McDougall Wirrpunda
Wirrpunda kicked 26 goals last season and with more and more experience up forward he could become our most dangerous player. He will with Chick be rotated through the midfield. Chick must play HF, he kicked 40+ goals last year so anywhere else would be a waste. CHF is the big question. Doog's gets the nod from me in front of Lynch who looks better down back and also cant kick straight, Seira who looks like he could be all but out of the rotation and Gaspar who is probably second in line but I would still like to see him groomed down back.
FF: Matera Wilson Williams
Matera is self explanatory, he is our best and most consistent forward and has been for a very long time. Wilson is our FF, if injury strikes then Lynch can take over like last season. Williams is a personal favourite of mine but I believe him to be a very good player. He has great hands and is a pretty decent kick for goal. He gets the nod in front of Sampi.
Ruck: Gardiner Cousins Jones
Gardy and Cuz are self explanatory. Jones IMO is our best tagger and is also a handy half forward. Definitely my choice in front of guys like Braun, Matera, Banfield.
Int: Cox Pe.Matera Chambers Banfield
Cox is our backup ruckmen and will spell Gardy. Strange that i couldnt find a spot in the starting 18 for Roo but he is easily still in our best 22 and will be rotated through the midfield, he can play anywhere though. Chambers is our impact running midfielder off the bench and Banners get's the last spot because I just couldnt find a tall with enough credentials.
Guys who missed out....
Glass: Could esily come into the side if Milli goes down.
Munro: Still on the outer I feel.
Sampi: Will get plenty of games, just not sure he will be there in Rd 1.
Morrison: We know his situation
Read: as above
Prior: Just cant see him in defence when we have Morrison, Read, Wooden, Green, Collica, Hunter and even Carroll all in the rotation ahead of him.
Carroll: Is on the end of the list above....
Humm: Would love to see him get plenty of games in a small defender role.
Lynch: Really should be in the side, probably on front of Banners.
Braun: love the guy and the 3 or 4 year ago Braun would still be among our best midfielders but he just hasnt recaptured that form and with Kerr, Chick and Judd's arrival. The emergence of Chambers and Wooden...well he gets left behind.
Haynes: looked better across Half back but get in line.
Gaspar: will get his turn but not yet among our best 22.
Embley: the enigma...just what to do with Embley???
Seira: at the back of the line for WC talls.
So there ya have it...my best go at it.
Very difficult because it depends upon form and the squad is strong.
Those coming off injury would all be immy best 22 if fully fit so I'll hit that list
Read, Milli, Collica
Prior, Jacko, Fletcher
Roo, Chick, Judd
Gaspar,Sierrakowski, Wirrpunda
Kerr, Wilson, Fido
Gardy, Cuz, Banfield
Cox, Wooden, Morrison, Hunter
(kerr is temporarily in the pocket where he will rotate with other midfielders being rested, or with chick going there as a true attacking option)
but Jones should be there too..mmmmm
In reality I believe that several younger players will be played instead as they have to get the experience to develop.
It's very hard to compress a fully fit squad into 22, and so many good players miss out.
About Cox in the pocket... he spent a lot of time in the pocket when he was rotating in the ruck, one game that comes to mind is vs Sydney.
And with Hunter on the HFF, I think he plays this role very well, our forward six would have been a little short if I had Chick on the forward and Hunter on the back, and I reckon Hunter is a great contested marker, wait till he bulks up, he will be a force.

This is my shot at our best 22 for next season. If you disagree you are obviously stupid and have no idea about Football ;)
B: Humm McIntosh Collica
HB: Hunter Jakovich Pe.Matera
C: Wirrpunda Judd Fletcher
HF: Chick McDougall Jones
FF: Ph. Matera Wilson Sampi
R: Gardiner Cousins Kerr
I: Green Cox Gaspar Morrison
West Coast has a lot of young talls that are basically at the same stage in their development. These are Gaspar, Lynch, McDougall and Glass. It is to hard to fit them all into the one team for next year if McIntosh decides to play on. Lynch I think will play Full Forward for us when Wilson retires.
I think Humm should be given the first opportunity as the small defender next year. Read hasn't played for 2 years and needs to spend a few weeks in the WAFL before he could really be considered. If Humm shows he can handle the position I think we should look at moving Read up the ground.
There a lot of players who are capable of being our half back flankers. These include Hunter, Green, Matera, Wirrpunda and Prior. Because of this competition I think we should move Wirrpunda out of the mix and play him on the wing. I really want to play Green on the half back line but then were do we put Peter Matera? Kasey Green will take over the position when Matera retires. Prior is no longer needed at West Coast and I think will play the season out in the WAFL and then be delisted.
I have Jones at HF but he will play as a tagger. I think we should play Sampi in a forward pocket. Hopefully he can learn some stuff off Phil. Chick will play Half Forward Flank and have some spells in the midfield. Judd in the centre of the ground where hopefully he can use his pace and run through the lines and kick some long goals or give it off to the forwards.
