View Full Version : Are Fitzroy supporters still dirty?

Are Fitzroy supporters still dirty about a certain player who, after winning the B&F, left the club to go and play for the Brisbane Bears for more money?
I think you all know who I'm talking about. That's right, it's Scott McIvor.

No Alastair. I don't think Scott McIvor was being particularly mercenary. I'm sure the lure of playing AFL footy in his home state was a key driver behind him joining the Bears. If he'd just left for more money, I'd have been more disappointed.

A potent *growl* for Bernie Harris :)
At least we got some transfer $$$ for McIvor and Harris.
Kevin Caton and Brendan McCormack.

I was pretty dirty on Lynch leaving Fitzroy to go to Brisbane in 93 as that was based purely on money.

The reassurances he was staying and the crocodile tears at the Club didn't help his cause.
I remember asking Lynchy if he was staying at the Fitzroy Club Hotel on the night of the last game and he assured me he was staying.
I reckon his CFS problems were the bad karma coming back to him based on his dishonesty that night.
Perhaps he thought you meant staying at the Fitzroy Club Hotel that night, rabs68. The lying ****ard, the hotel didn't have any accommodation did it?

With some neutral fairness.... perhaps Lynch had to leave? I mean, Fitzroy wasn't really a team with an ideal looking future. It was a shambles and he knew it. Do you dislike Roos because he left? Osborne? Pert?
Although I think A.Lynch's post may have been somewhat tongue in cheek, it does tend to bring us towards a more serious issue regarding who we regard as being the 'stars' of our club.
Notably, when Melbourne had their TOC, they attempted to select the more loyal of their star players for their best-ever side.
Fitzroy's TOC side, arguably one of the most star-studded of all, contains quite a few players who were noted for spending their careers at other clubs in search of more money, or glory (ie: their careers were focused more towards personal gain, etc.).
As a supporter, what type of player do you regard more highly in your memories? A star player who excelled amongst the best in the game, who went on to leave the club for personal gains, or a player who was only 'reasonably' talented, but battled it out for their entire career at the one club despite having opportunities to move elsewhere?

That's a really interesting question. I mean for me, Lynchy was my fave player right from the start of his career, and it was a bitter disappointment to me when he 'jumped ship' so to speak. I guess he had his reasons but I don't know, I do have a hell of a lot of respect for the guys who stuck it out to the bitter end and turned down other opportunities. I just kinda feel they represent the true spirit of the Fitzroy Football Club a little better. :)
For me the boys who wore the colours in that last year of 1996, alongside those who retired from the club are held in the highest regard.
I am afraid that Alistair Lynch sits at the bottom of the pile, because his decision to move was the one that ultimately sealed the fate of Fitzroy as an AFL club.
At the opposite end of the spectrum to Lynch are Chris Johnson and Pikey. They are special people because they were there at the finish and now have premiership success as their reward.
Horace Pikey & Johno were there at the finish. Lynchy left well before the end so he doesn't get the same sort of ackelades as the other two.
as a side note, I thought Warwick Irwin is an interesting one... he left the Roys for a few years for the cash - I've read a few times that it was one of his great regrets in life... thankfully he returned to close out his career.
Lynch in 'For The Love Of The Jumper' mentions that his decision to leave Fitzroy is not something that he is at all proud of.
I guess even looking back further, Haydn Bunton left Fitzroy and went on to have great success in WA, and also in SA. Having the reputation that he had established at Fitzroy, I wonder whether it was huge money that enticed his services across the border?
Does anyone know the story?
You've gotta offer something to get a guy across from WA in those days.
Before WWII not many Sandgroppers came over to play footy due to the travel and upheavel of their life. Those that did were offered money by the club, but more so by some private financier of the club. There was a limit on player payments so extra payments came from either an employer or private source.
