Some articles on Jones.
Grove's rising star
OCEAN Grove's rising AFL star Jordan Jones will meet with West Coast officials and players for the first time as an Eagle today.
The Eagles selected Jones with their number 52 pick in the AFL national draft on Saturday.
Jones' parents Stuart and Joel Jones will fly with their son to Perth today to meet his host family and football officials.
Jones, 18, will spend until December 22 in Western Australia before returning home to celebrate Christmas and new year with his family.
The 189-centimetre defender said he was excited about the challenges ahead.
``I'm really excited to get over there and make the most of it,'' he said.
``I played in Western Australia earlier in the year and I loved it.''
West Coast players and coaches have already contacted Jones, welcoming him to the club.
``I've had lots of texts and phone calls from some of the players,'' he said.
``I was wondering how they got my number at first but it made me feel welcome.''
The Jones family listened to the draft on radio in their Ocean Grove home on Saturday.
Adelaide, Sydney and Hawthorn also showed interest in Jones but it was the Eagles which snared the Geelong Falcons star.
Jones said he was unsure if he would be drafted as each number went by.
``I did get a little bit nervous but we were listening for the clubs that showed some interest,'' he said.
But Mr Jones revealed Sydney had told his son's manager they would have selected him with pick 61.
Mr Jones said he was proud of his son's achievements after leaving behind a promising basketball career to become an AFL star.
Jones represented Victoria in basketball and football national championships in the same week as a 15-year-old and it was then when he made his decision to pursue a football career.
``It definitely paid off, I worked hard for it and I got rewarded by being drafted,'' he said.
Jones won't be alone when he heads to Perth as his Falcons team-mate Ben Bucovaz was drafted to Fremantle at number 56.
Jones said having a friend close by would help him handle the transition.
``Me and Bucca are good mates and it's good I'll have someone I know over there,'' he said.
Fellow Ocean Grove teenager Ayce Cordy went to the Western Bulldogs at pick 14 under the father/son rule.

Jones’ TAC Cup season was derailed when he tore a shoulder muscle playing for Vic Country at the NAB AFL under-18 championships, but good form in the early part of the season and for Vic Country has kept him in the draft mix.
A tall defender, Jones is strong overhead and good in one-on-one contests.
The AFL’s youth and high performance co-ordinator Jason McCartney described Jones as the type of defender who can win the footy and run off the backline to create opportunity.
Hawthorn, Adelaide and Sydney have all been touted as Jones’ new home.

Jordan Jones hopes his number comes up in Saturday's draft
WHEN Jordan Jones reflects on his 2008 season after Saturday's AFL draft, he will view the under-18 national championships as a defining moment.
It was the championships which capped off the Geelong Falcons brilliant start to the year when he stood top 10 draft hopes Jack Watts and Tyrone Vickery.
Later that carnival, Jones tore a shoulder muscle which destroyed the second half of his season.
"After the injury we tried to nurse him through the year with some rehabilitation and medical treatment," Falcons regional manager Michael Turner said.
"Unfortunately, because he was a key backman or marking forward, playing with a crook shoulder was quite difficult and his from and confidence dropped off in the second half of the year."
The 190cm defender was later left out of the Falcons' finals side as he went under the knife.
Jones looks back on his late season form with frustration.
"I'm a marking, spoiling player so I just couldn't have the same impact ... even to tackle someone I'd hurt it again," he said.
He now hopes his trademark brazen play off half-back and national championships form will stick in the mind of recruiters.
"I'm an attacking player, I like taking risks and setting up the play from the back," he said.
"A lot of people say I'm too small to be a key defender in the AFL, but I can see myself playing there or adapting to that rebounding role."
Turner said Jones shapes as a "60 per cent chance" of being drafted on Saturday.
"If you look at players like Campbell Brown, AFL clubs want blokes able to play in a number of positions and above their height," Turner said.
"He's been a state basketballer and footballer, so there's obviously a lot of ability there and an AFL club might draw that out of him."
great thread your friends with him right. have you spoken to him since being drafted??

Shoulder injury?!
Did we go into this draft thinking "lets get all the injured players possible, and then call them steals" ?

WITH a name like Jordan Jones it should come as no surprise that West Coast's high-flying defensive prospect was once a promising young basketballer.
Jones, pick No.52 overall at last year's NAB AFL Draft, joins a growing list of AFL players with basketball on their resumes, with Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury and St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo at the forefront.
The 18-year-old played representative basketball for Vic Country and has no doubt the round ball game helped him develop into a footballer worthy of last year's draft.
"It's certainly helped out in my footy around the contests and with my skills," Jones told westcoasteagles.com.au.
"Because basketball is played on such a small court I've also noticed it with vision."
Jones played as a point guard for Vic Country and was a part of their national championship-winning side in 2005.
However, that success turned out to be Jones' last in basketball as he reached a fairly simple decision to chase his football dreams.
"At that point in time I had the basketball carnival on, a week's break, and then the football carnival. After the footy carnival that's when I noticed that I couldn't do both," he said.
"I played well in basketball, but then in footy I struggled. That's when I realised I needed to work and concentrate on footy to help myself get drafted.
"That was the crossroads for me – but footy's always been what I wanted to do, so it was a pretty easy choice."
Jones came to West Coast from the Geelong Falcons in Victoria's TAC Cup competition as a versatile tall defender.
He started his football evolution as a ruckman before moving to centre half-back, but he says he'd like to develop into a player similar to teammate Mark Nicoski.
"He creates a lot of run and carry from the backline, so that's the sort of role I'd like to slot into," Jones said. "A back pocket, half-back flanker who can play on the medium to tall players or play on the little Cyril Riolis.
"There are a couple of different roles I could develop into. I've just got to work on some different attributes of my game."
Jones says he's worked hard on his running the past few years, something that has seen him used occasionally on a wing for WAFL side Peel Thunder this season.
The Geelong product has averaged 14 possessions from nine games this season, playing mostly across half-back, and is coming off a season-high 23-possessions against East Fremantle.
"Hopefully now I can string a good month of footy together with Peel and put my hand up for selection in the senior side," he said.
