There are many out there many that i have seen and many that i would love to see, but have no idea about.
My personal favourites are The club (great movie great play) and The year of the dog (doco about the Footscray football club during the 1996 season, gives a fly on the wall perspective to how a battling footy club goies about things.
Could people please post some of their favourite Football movies/Doco's.

Yeah i studied that in school as well, has little to do with football (except for the start), but i found it a great movie.

Not sure if it was a movie or mini-series but "Valentine's Day" is a good footy one and is also a comedy.

Yeah saw that. It was a movie length show on the ABC staring steadfast Saints supporter Rhys Muldoon.

They made a doco on the 1998 draft that was pretty interesting.

ABC TV series - 6x30min episodes.

The Great MacArthy

Little seen adaptation of Barry Oakley's book. For good reason. Awful.

Fly-on-the-wall doco of the Doggies disastrous 1996 season.

Apatr from the footy scenes being absolutely terrible, that was an enjoyable movie.

Yeah I guess not so much for the footy scenes, just the history and comical nature of the town is good.

The Club was fantastic - highly recommended. Especially for the Collingwood acting.

Yeah that was a segment following Des Headland in the passion to play. Anyone who hasn't seen that should it's a great players insight into the game.

"If I have to arks ya one more time".

I find it was better in book form, except it was called Deadly Unna.

Reckon Big Men Fly would be pretty hard to find.

The ABC might not even have it anymore as they taped over a-lot of their stuff in the 70s.

Channel 10 did likewise to save costs.

For a sports-mad country like ours, we make relatively few sports movies, unlike the US or UK, which both churn them out to ready made audiences.

I blame the inherent snootiness of the local industry which prefers earnest 'worthy' films...

Great call. Ironically it's these 'worthy' films which are more often then not shit and the industry complains there isn't enough money. Hot tip: stop making shit.

Did you get the 3-pack from the ABC Shop too?

I primarily got it for YotD, but to get The Great Macarthy (haven't seen it, but with Barry Humphries and John Jarrett it sounds good) and The Club (classic) as well as the Barassi/1979 Norf doco is great value for $24 or whatever it was.

Maybe they should make a movie about the boys from Neighbours. :D

Yeah i got it for a birthday present a few years ago and was very pleased with it. I enjoy good cinema and i love football so it's a good mix. I wouldn't get your hopes up to high on the Great Macarthy, its a fair bit confusing and the age of the video makes it hard to hear and there arn't subtitles avaliable, plus the movie isnt all that great.

The Club and Australian Rules are easily the picks of the very small bunch.

I reckon you might be right i gave them a call and they found it hard to believe i still remembered that and said it would be very unsual if they still had copies.

I have the book (script) of THe Club (it was originally a play). In the forward David Williamson specifically refers to And The Big Men Fly as a precursor to The Club. Both stories centre around a key figure - the 'Boom Recruit from the Bush'. While And The Big Men Fly had Achilles Jones - the angelic innocent, duped and manipulated by the big-city schemers, Williamson wanted his character to be able to realise he was being used, and that he had only contempt for the pathetic power struggles about a meaningless sport.

Both great stories (I have both scripts). And I'm pretty sure Frank Wilson played the key villian in both (Prez in one - ex-coach in the other).

The Great McCarthy is a fairly poor adaptation of Barry Oakley's book. It is episodic, disjointed, and John Jarratt's McCarthy lacks the humour of the book's protagonist. Barry Humphries is quite amusing though.

I would, however, thoroughly recommend the book, A Salute to the Great McCarthy, if you can find it. It is very funny social satire - one of my favourite novels, which of course made the shoddy film such a let down.

The Club is a classic Australian film. John Howard is brilliant in that film in particular the part about the Prince of the Seagulls. :D
