Interesting article on afl.com atm about which modern day players would/could've have been drafted by EFC if the old recruiting zones were still in place.
Got me thinking about who are some of the best players that played for Essendon who were recruited from the Essendon area.
Lets keep it say 1970 onwards-although theres plenty of old timers from the old days eg Reynolds,Hutchison,Jack Clarke etc..
I'm sitting here at friends house killing time waiting to go to Tulla to catch a plane back to W.A so i havn't got my Bomber books to look up,but off the top of my head some of the best would be....
Lloyd
Simon Madden
Bomber Thompson
Mercuri
Misiti
Harvey
Alessio
Peverill
John Barnes
D.Fletcher (he sort of counts)
.........gotta go catch plane:)

I almost certain they didn't.

I'm quite sure Lucas spent Yr 12 at St. Bernard's after he was drafted by Essendon - I'm probably wrong though.

I'm pretty sure David Hille went to the Peninsula school and his old man was principal/involved down there also

You are correct. Lloyd and Lucas were in my year at Bernards (1995). Although Lucas only went there for year 12 after he was drafted.

Lucas was there for one year. Hille wasn't a student.

lucas was a camperdown boy drafted from the falcons when in yr11 then moving to melbourne (st bernards for yr12). under the old zones etc he would have been a fitzroy boy like paul broderick (another camperdown boy). chris heffernan down the road in terang would have also been fitzroy.

Sorry Rob, you might make it in to the list of "Greatest Footscray players from Taylors Lakes"...but not this one.
Speaking of RS, I umpired him in an EDFL U/18 game many years ago. He'd been playing for Calder (I think), so I was a bit surprised to see him running around Sewell Reserve on a crappy Sat morning.
He put on one of the most scintallating displays I've ever seen on a football field and I'd played against and umpired Joey and Mercs. TL won by over 250. RS kicked something like 15 goals playing on-ball and gathered at least 60 possesions. I know their coaching staff lost count. I know it was B grade, but he was on absolute fire that day.
When we drafted him, I thought "You Ripper"...well, it didn't work out Rob...sorry!

One thing that is never mentioned is the fact that Sir Richard was a mad carlton fan as a boy, trained with them and was told twice that he was too small for league football. It`s something to be grateful to carlton for as they showed the door to one of THE most influential figures in Australian football.

Barry Davis probably would've been one of our best from the '70s.
Recruited from Essendon High School.
