View Full Version : We should publish a book.
I reckon there have been some great posts on this Roys board of ours here. I have often thought, that some of them are worthy of being a chapter in a book. This has often had me thinking, that it would be a fantastic read, if a group of Fitzroy supporters, such as ourselves, were able to compile various memories or accounts of Fitzroy as WE remember, possibly similar to some of the stuff that we have seen on these boards over the past few years (I have certainly appreciated reading it all - and would most definitely fork out the $'s for any book that displayed this sort of material).
Not only could we cover the days up until 1996, but I also think there have been some extremely note-worthy occasions since that date (such as that cold Monday night out at Waverly in 2000, to see Coburg-Fitzroy play Collingwood).
I reckon it could be something special to see put together, and as it would be coming from the perspective of the supporters, it would come across as being a pure and down-to-earth account of supporter feelings for their club.
What do others reckon?
As an outsider, I reckon some of the best reading on BigFooty is to be done on this board. Maybe it's the standard of writing or the intellectual nous of the authors that contributes to the enjoyment, maybe it's the remembrance of good old suburban footy, or maybe it's the fact that the posts are ABOUT footy and a footy club that all have a mutual like/love of, instead of the other boards which during the footy season are probably three-quarters filled with weekly selection gripes and opposition baiting.
i have thought exactly the same thing stocka.....
Good idea Stocka but who actually has the time to collate everything that has been posted Stocka?
I know that most of the posters in this particular area actually work and most of us don't have that much spare time to get everything together but it is a great idea.
There were a few other Coburg-Fitzroy matches that could get a mention too.
Top idea.
Although I work I reckon this would be a great thing to do, and I reckon I would be able to set enough time aside to get this thing off the ground.
I suppose we need to work out what we want to put in the book. I reckon a collection of what the Roys mean to all of us would be a cracker. That way we can cover most of the things we loved about our club.

I like the idea, but how do we make it happen?
Well, I reckon if we could get say 3,000-5,000 words of wisdom from as many Roy boys as we can would be an ideal start.
As I have said I would be happy to be a contributor, as well as a sort or editor of the recollections. I am sure Bill Athurton will be able to help us with some archival photographs, and I reckon that between us all we can make sure the factual bits of our recollections are as accurate as possible.
The main thing we need to make sure the book contains is the spirit of this great club that we all have kept hold of. I reckon we are part of the greatest club in the world, and I also reckon there are enough people out there who would be interested in our stories. We need to make sure that our memories of following the Roys throught our lives are able to be read by footy fans in general in the future.
Any other ideas on how we can get the ball rolling?
I think we'd need to think about whether or not the book was "themed" or not. Likewise, I tend to think that a blend of formal and informal writing would be good. What I mean is, there would be room for straight up factual accounts etc., but also things that are written on here that are beyond factual, but more in the realm of "personal engagement" with the club, etc.

I would think that the book could have a context of "Recollections".
One thing about those involved in the Roys - we were a good mix of everyday supporters, some celebrity supporters and players with a good sense of humour, passion and pride.
A mix of stories from these three sides of the 'mix' would be brilliant.
eg. one of my favourite reads about the Roys was a recollection by Ron Alexander which I believe was in the paper sometime around 1996. It was during him time (from memory) on the coaching staff at West Coast, late 80s early 90s. The Weagles were playing the Roys one day in Melbourne, and he was walking round the boundary pre-match. People started standing and clapping, and he was looking round wondering who they were clapping for, thinking Paul Roos or someone had wandered on to the field near him. The Roy fans were actually clapping him.
I think those kinds of stories in the words of the people involved would be great - but also a mix in of stories from the regular folk out there, many of which have appeared on this website. Personal experiences. Not necessarily the stories of what it was like to win a final, but other reasons that made it great to be a Roy.

Maybe we could call the book "Roycollections - a collection of stories about what it is like to be a Royboy"
I reckon it would be a cracker!!!

I am now taking recollections of particular matches.
Add your match story here for inclusion.
Its a work in progress so bear with me.
I'll soon have a link up so you can see how its building.
I need Date and Round number of the match. Others should be able to help you if you struggle to recall these.

Ok, try http://roycollections.footypedia.com/rptReports.html
Its scrappy, because its just exported out of MS Access, but its a start.
There's some old reports there that I've got from this board's archive ... some are just tiny one-liners, they're just intended to get the ball rolling.
