View Full Version : What is the point of 3 day games?
Seriously
There is no point to these 3 day games that England are playing against the states at the moment. You could probably get more practice in the nets. There is bugger all chance of actually winning a game and getting team morale up for the Poms.
Make them 4 dayers is my solution.
yea ive never understood 3 day games either. Not long enough to to get a win and to long to go for the slog ala one day matches.
It's to give you a chance of having a decent competitive innings. You'll never get a 2 innings result but it does allow a chance to have a proper bat and bowl.
England get some match practice without suffering the indignity of losing to a state side.
If anything I think they should cut them to 2-day matches and have just one innings each.

3 day games are good practice for their tests. They bat twice, Aus bowls once.

The point is it is harder for the Poms to lose outright, most games they play in against Australian opposition are over in three days or less. Just getting them ready for the test matches which if they are lucky will last almost three days. Why make them work harder than they need to, that is the point of them!

I prefer 4 day games - more chance of getting a result.

That might usually be the case, but Queensland batted on to almost reach 600.
It's not much of a practice game when the second side doesn't even get a full bat.
Better to have three one-dayers with a bit of squad rotation, but I suppose the fixtures aren't drawn up with the touring team's best interests in mind.

You'd think that 4 day games would be essential with tests going for 5 - then maybe someone knows something about how long most of them will really go this year!!
It was predominantly 4 day games for years [will show my age here!!] and in fact many sides would come out here in October and start in Perth and work their way around the continent and play the 1st test in Brisbane in December, have the two tests after in Melbourne and Sydney, play in Adelaide over the Australia Day weekend and teh 5th test just after that.
You can imagine how conditioned a visiting side would be playing a schedule like that.
Now with ODI's its all changed!! - and of course usually a second side here playing tests and ODI's as well.

Probably the reason that there have been no four-day games so far on this tour is that is such a cramped schedule... mainly due to the World Cup.
They probably reasoned that instead of two four-day games, it would be better to have a two-day and 2 three-day games that would ensure that more players get more of a go and that the, batsmen, get a guaranteed couple of knocks in the lead-up.
Think it's a good idea myself.

i recokn just playing a whole heap of two days game would be the way to go just as long as the team batting first declared after day one to make it interesting.

Never understood why the poms played so much 3 day domestic cricket either. All you get is stupid declarations and contrived results. In a non competitive match like a tour warm up there is not even that pressure to go for a result.
Best thing the state team can do is, like Queensland, try to tire out the bowlers by keeping them in the field as long as possible and reduce the tourists batting practice time.

Couldn't agree more, I had this exact thought myself.
We've changed to 4 day cricket in the cc & I reckon it has helped enormously.
