RISING Australian paceman Peter Siddle has been ruled out of the one-day series against South Africa with a stress fracture in his foot.

Siddle, the man of the match in the third Test win over the Proteas at the SCG, has been replaced by Queensland swing bowler Ryan Harris for the first two matches in the five-game series.

Twenty20 sensation David Warner is also poised to be a late inclusion in the one-day squad with vice-captain Michael Clarke in doubt with a thumb injury.

Clarke is due to have an assessment on his right thumb in Melbourne on Wednesday and Warner, who hit 89 off 43 balls in his international debut on Sunday at the MCG, has been placed on standby.

Team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris reported Siddle has been playing with pain in his left foot which grew worse during the 2-1 Test series loss to South Africa.

"After the series was completed, we investigated and scans revealed the early signs of mild stress on a bone in his left foot," Kountouris said in a statement.

"As such, Peter needs a short period of rest before resuming bowling which we anticipate will be in a further two weeks.

"He is expected to take part in the one-day series against New Zealand in February."

Hmmm I hope he doesn't start to become Watson. He like Watson seems to be very injury prone.

Two shoulder reconstructions. AFAIK, the stress fractures are new.

Ryan Harris???

The Hilf continues to get ripped.

EDIT: Unless I'm reading that wrong and it's just the squad rather than the team.

Bewildered as to how Bollinger get's to debut in Sydney, and is so far down the pecking order in the OD setup.

Harris is taking his place in the squad which the Hilf is already in.
Shattered about this though.

given his history of injury I'd be inclined to only play siddle in test matches... the full international calendar will be too much for his injury prone body i feel... it's not as if he takes it easy on his body or anything...

just play him in the test matches... leave blokes like bracken to the pyjama cricket...

faaaaaaar out not good at all.

i know the stress fractures are new but injury prone sportsmen are just injury prone in general and with his history of shoulder problems this isn't good.

i agree with someone above, we should just leave him to test cricket. to be fair as well his bowling isn't as suited to one-day cricket as it is test cricket (he's a strike man, not really a container) and couple that with his generally fairly average fielding and terrible throw (because of shoulder reco's) i don't think it would hurt to put him just in the test team.... especially for now.

At least he's never had a back injury.

Agree. Stuff the one day stuff just keep him for Test matches.

Probably but we have enough guys that can bat in the middle, no proper opener plus Warner is x-factor material.

Hmm, that does ring a bell for some reason. I'm not sure now.

This was always the concern with Siddle. The main reason he's played so few first class games is the number of injuries.

Given the amount of overs the bowlers have put down in test cricket over the last few months (9 tests in 11 weeks), I'm not surprised they are dropping like flies. When you are getting beaten you also tend to bowl even more overs.

Mitch was also having foot troubles during the Sydney test, but seems to be okay for the moment. Ponting has been giving him 30-40 overs an innings... asking for physical breakdowns.

Personally, I'm more excited at the prospect of seeing Ryan Harris playing than Siddle. There are a lot of bowlers either injured or being rested (Lee, Johnson, Clark, Siddle, Geeves, Watson), so this could well be the only chance Ryan Harris has for a while.

Knowing that, Harris will be working harder than anybody else in either team. And if he can perform well, it will give Australia another all-round option. Harris is more than capable of opening the bowling and actually swinging the ball, and batting at 7 or 8. And add to that the fact that he is one of the best fielders in Australia. If he gets the chance, he could be a very handy player for Australia.

Fair dinkum, do you lot actually READ the article.

Siddle has had a history of shoulder problems, this has absolutely nothing to do with current predicament.

It is a mild injury and he needs a 2 week break, nothing major. He is still young and no doubt his not used to bowling the type of overs his been bowling in the recent past especially in 3 back to back test matchs.

He will get fitter and more tolerant to the workload as time passes, and until that occurs his workload will have to be managed and preventative action taken to prevent injury in the form of periodic resting.

Credit to the Australian team management for making this decision.

Could be that the physio doesn't like referring to podiatrists and the like.

It happens.

It's a real shame he's injured. But there is many other fast bowlers
eg
Bracken
Hilfenhaus
Tait
Bollinger
