Just watched this new movie today directed by and starring clint eastwood.
i've got to say this is the best film i've seen in a couple of years and i thought the wrestler was great, eastwoods performance easily eclipses rourke's.
not unlike million dollar baby in some ways and a lot of his other films in which he is the renegade loner.
a powerful performance by eastwood and also by the supporting cast, no spoilers but the scenes with his barber were among the funniest i've seen in a long time, and it's not a comedy at all.
catch this film if you can.
If it's anything like Million Dollar Baby, I'm going to steer well clear.

I have huuuuuge respect for Eastwood as both a director and actor. So I was eagerly anticipating Gran Torino when I first heard about it, and even more so once the critics started raving about it.
I saw it last night. I was bitterly disappointed.
Eastwood, as expected, was awesome playing his character. Such a class actor. The rest was complete BS. The rest of the cast was HORRENDOUS, i cringed every time one of the other characters opened their mouths to speak. Just didn't buy any of it. The story was very predictable. Once it was clear what the movie was about, and this became apparent in the first 5 or so minutes, it was obvious where the whole thing was headed. I don't wanna give too much away but I felt as if i've seen this type of movie plenty of times before, and it's rare to come out of an Eastwood directed film thinking that.
Overall i'd give it about 5.5/10..... and the only reason it gets about 1/10 is because Eastwood is bloody good in it. This film is wildly overrated.

respect your right to have an opinion but you're miles off target and obviously hard to please. what do you class as an 8 or 9 out of 10 then?
Enjoyed the flick, loved Clint.
But have to agree, some of the other acting was woeful. The Priest, in particular, I thought he was either reading his lines off a cue card, or struggling with some memory recall.

I saw the film last night, great piece of work. Awesome just awesome.
I like to be entertained at times without violence/action/sex scenes.
I am very very strict on my ratings of movies. This was definitely a 7/10 movie.
I dont pass many movies at all either most are lucky to get a 4 from me. A movie that entertains me is a 5 !
For the record I think spoilers should be discussed here as I didnt open this thread until viewing it !!!!! Your silly if you do if you didnt want to know what the movie is all about.
Hmmm had elements of a lot of other movies. I like Clint, a real angry son of bitch character. LoL Reminds me of what I would be like when I am older.
Million Dollar Baby was another great movie by him, I didnt bother seeing at the cinema as I thought it would be garbage, loved to be shocked by how good it was.

Yeah agree the casting of the priest was poor.
Loved the horrible white family of Eastwood's, should have been more prominent to provide the contrast of the whites and Asian cultures.
The white nigga was really funny ! :p

i think the priest casting was deliberate, a young inexperienced priest in contrast to the wordly, seen it all, jaded ex marine with a grudge. it was almost as if they wanted walt to see that although the priest had really seen nothing at all in his life, his simple message had some relevance for walt and made him open his eyes.
"you ever met someone you shouldnt'a messed with, that's me"
loved the scene also when "toad" walked into the barbers shop after being given some instructions and he had the gun pulled on him, i almost had tears rolling down my face at that whole sequence. also after seeing his construction mate for a job for "toad", leaving you can just hear walt say "let's leave him alone so he can play with himself".:D

I was cringing with that scene. There was no passion in the "let me out, let me out, etc". It was just plain weird how bad the acting in that scene was.
All in all though, enjoyable film 8.5/10 for me
Just seen the film and Clint Eastwoods performance was first class and some of the lines would be considered "politically incorrect" in todays society but it made the point. I loved the line regarding the dog.
This is one film I recommend go and see - if anything just to Clints performance.

Eastwood at the age of 78 just continues to amaze me.A movie about racism, neighbourly stuff, being a father, how violence begats violence.
Yeah i loved it.

Which part of my assessment did you not agree with?
I rate originality very highly, and there was not much, if anything that was original about this film. In fact, you'd struggle to find a movie with more stereotypical cliche's in it than Gran Torino. I realise that given that Eastwood's character was a racist that the stereotypical things needed to be highlighted but it still went overboard imo. I don't see how you can disagree with my call about the acting.
Eastwood > All
The barber shop is absolute gold.

Does Clint actually act in this one or is he just playing himself as usual?
Not that I don't love the man of course.

simple, i liked the acting, you can't argue with that!
yes there were cliches in it and the racist thing was everywhere but as pure entertainment i enjoyed it and felt that it was a great movie after i'd seen it. we can agree to disagree you know! still waiting to see what film you would regard as an 8 or 9/10 so i can compare.
anyway, i'd better not talk about this film anymore as i'm already on a YELLOW CARD, CATMAN!

Sensational movie. 9/10
I consider parts of Walt to be similar to me which may have explained why I loved it so much. I was just wanting him to go and blow them away at the end but he was smart and got them back in a much more satisfying way.
Was it just me or did anyone else feel like knocking the priest's head off his shoulders?

Shawshank 9/10
Godfather part 2 9/10
there's a couple for ya.
you really rate Gran Torino alongside these masterpieces? As you said, we can disagree, i've got no problem with that. I just think people rate films too highly in general.

i agree with shawshank, haven't seen godfather 2 enough to rate it that high. fwiw, i would rate films like bull durham, napoleon dynamite and the usual suspects all 9/10. there's an eclectic bunch but personally all enjoyable in their own right. wouldn't say gt is a masterpiece, just an extremely good film
Enjoyed this very much. A simple and enjoyable flick.

You mean "gook, slope and chink" are not politically correct?
Saw it last night, average at best. Fairly unconvincing and quite predictable. I thought a hard arsed Korean war veteran with no understanding of multiculturalism and total disdain for anything un-American, who suddenly becomes friendly with his Indo-chinese neighbour because she offers him free beer, was too much to swallow.
Not surprised that this movie received no Golden Globe, SAG or Oscar nominations. It's just not one of the better movies of the year.

It was released in time. It was actually released around the same time as The Wrestler. In fact, the Gran Torino song during the closing credits was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Thought it was excellent, while the plot may have been a little predictable Clint made it work he simply was a joy to watch. A 78 year old action hero really he is the only man in Hollywood and perhaps the world who could pull this role off.
It's funny how a lot of you complained about the poor acting by the rest of the cast I didn't really notice it. Mabye it was because I was really blown away by Clint but I thought the cast of amatuers worked for this film. It reminds me of Martin Scorsese using amatuers in Kundun. The acting isnt great but they were believable in the roles.
The only part I didn't really like was when the kid goes to the barber and the construction job. The comedy in the rest of the film seemed natural here it just felt delibrately playing for laughs.
8/10 from me
Even though it wasn't a comedy- I couldn't help but laugh throughout the whole movie- which makes me a pretty sad person I know...
Thought the Asian actors were a bit crap though...but Eastwood was brilliant as always.
Wow what a movie. Saw this yesterday with a friend and we were both amazed at Eastwoods performances.
Very sad ending though, as I actually felt for Eastwoods character.
Easily one of the best movies of 08. I don't know what some of you are thinking when you're disappointed with this. I bet you're never pleased.

Totally agree Kerby. :thumbsu::thumbsu:
I watched it today for the first time after missing it at the movies and i was just blown away from start to finish. Best movie i have seen in the last 5 years with No Country For Old Men. I can see where others are coming from with some of the acting performances but Clint was sensational and it overshadowed the other performances that were not as good. I could see how it was going to end but found myself not wanting the movie to end like that and hoping it wasnt going to be, but it was.
Must Watch for anyone who has not seen it. ;)
Pure Bad Ass Clint Eastwood and he had so many similarities to Dirty Harry even at 78 years of age. Pure Gold. I loved the scene on his Birthday when his son and daughter in law come over and give him some questionable presents and drop hints about retirement homes..... you just knew how it was going to end! Lol

Watched it again on Foxtel today. It is a brilliant movie and I can't recommend it highly enough to those who haven't seen it.
I am probably against the flow here. It was definately a good movie, but not a great one IMHO. I found Eastwood has become even more stiff and wooden in old age. He does a good job, but overall not one of my fav movies of his.
Although a good film it is very overrated, there is nothing special about Clint Eastwood's performance. Not sure how this overshadowed his superior film of last year, Changeling.

This. I found it to be uneven... some scenes were quite good, then the next scene would be a load of crap. (Would provide a specific example but I've pretty much wiped this movie from my memory ;)) Disappointing ending and not enough character development imo.
The only supporting cast member who could act was the grandmother, probably because she didn't have any lines in english.
The movie was hilarious, I was pretty much laughing at the dialogue the whole way through. Reminded me of 'Bad Santa' in a weird way also.
Kid locked in the basement scene was about as good as Hayden Christensen's attempt at showing emotion in star wars, laughably terrible scene ruiner.

Was a good movie. Not a great one.
Tao was passable. The sister was alright. The fat kid who got his face kicked in by Eastwood was probably the worst actor ive ever witnessed.
For me, it certainly wasnt anywhere near a fantastic movie or one of the best movies ive seen this year. Was a good watch, not much more.
My favourite movie of last year together with The Dark Knight, Clint nails the role and all the supporting characters were brilliant. The ending is much maligned but I really liked it.
