Not the most convincing of results in either game so far, but it's all square heading into game 3 at the SCG. Australia have dumped both Ryan Harris and Ben Hilfenhaus, bringing in Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait and/or Nathan Hauritz. If the and/or is an and, James Hopes or Cameron White will bring the omissions to three.
If I keep saying Steyn will be rested it surely has to happen eventually. What doesn't have to happen is the inclusion of one of the left armers. The pressure is building on Herschelle Gibbs but he'll probably hold off van Jaarsveld for the weekend at least, though giving McKenzie time to build an innings must be something that's crossed the selectors' minds.

batting power plays are the key again in this game. australia have to put together a better power play than last game. the scg is usualy a flat batters track in odi's and to be honest i wouldnt be suprised if the team that bats first. puts more the 350 on the board.
australia for mine with mitch back in

Geez Hilf is a bit unlucky leading wicket taker this series and he misses out. I know that he has gone for a few runs but he has bowled very well its just that he has struggled with the power play late in the game.

I thought the batting powerplay was meant to 'spice up' the middle overs but I think unless they use it straight after the first 10 overs (when the bowling team is likely to use theirs) it probably wont occur until after 40 overs. Mainly because you can take more risks as you've only got 10 overs left to bat. As we saw in the last match the powerplay can have the wrong effect for the batting side as they go on the attack which results in the loss of quick wickets.

Agree completely. It's beyond the joke now - he's been taking wickets and swinging the ball early, ffs what does he have to do?
SA to win this game i reckon.

Why are Australia playing Hauritz? Play Hilfenaus

As has already been said dropping Hilf is a deadset joke. He would benefit from being the third quick with Mitch coming back and perhaps not having to bowl at the death. Laughable.

Why would they need to rotate Hilfenhaus when he doesn't need a rest - as opposed to Johnson, or a Lee if he was playing?
Hilfenhaus is unlucky but the others are better one day bowlers.
I'm tipping us to win quite easily. They had their best chance to win another one but ****ed up the chase. Their ODI teams looks inferior to their test one. Ours is in transition but has better quality.

Hauritz and Hopes are better?
I beg to differ.
They're rotating the bowlers, it's no big deal.
Plus throughout the series they've been playing the all-rounder Hopes as a 4th bowling option instead of having a massive tail. Although it could be argued MJ could play at #8.
I reckon it's a good chance to look at Hauritz, how will we ever know if he can cut it in ODIs if we don't play him - and under lights at the SCG is as good a place as any.

The batting team should have to use their powerplay between overs 20 and 40 only.

Well not give away runs at the death to start with.

Australia are going to play an all rounder, so realistically were always going to go into one dayers with 3 specialist quicks, maybe a spinner (pretty rare these days) an all rounder (hopes/watson) and then get overs from white/d.hussey/clarke.
Hilfy is a better bowler than hopes or hauritz bat there not competing for the same spots. Tait, Johnson, Bracken are ahead of Hilfy whose next in line.
I would like to see the team as follows:
Marsh
Warner
Ponting
m.Hussey
d.Hussey
Haddin
Hopes
Johnson
Huaritz
Bracken
Tait
12th man White
Giving us 5 specialist bowlers. As i believe d.Hussey is not the 5th bowling option, white if not bowled is not providing enough at 6, haddin is being wasted, Johnson and Hauritz can add some batting to the side.
I love the Hilf but sadly his death bowling was a concern.
However his bowling early and through the middle was pretty good and I'm sure he will be back. Quite possibly in Adelaide where Bracken might get the game off.

I get that they're rotating bowlers, hence Hilf was never gonna play no matter how he performed in Hobart.
But why do they feel the need to? He's not carrying any injuries and is extremely fit, why do they feel the need to have this bowler rotation thing in place?

However his bowling early and through the middle was pretty good and I'm sure he will be back. Quite possibly in Adelaide where Bracken might get the game off. The key is not to bowl him at the death. He struggled getting the yorker right at the death in both games until the last over last week. He'd only go for between 30-40 otherwise and take wickets if bowled at other times. He has everything I like as a quick. Maybe they're rotating too given there's 10 one-dayer's including NZ.
Suppose being Sydney they went for a spin option. I can see that too.

True. Good post:thumbsu:
Hilfenhaus' bowling at the death wasn't that bad. He went for 15 in the third last over but then bowled very well the last over for us.
I hope he goes to South Africa for the tests.

Are you kidding???
Hopes very lucky...
Hauritz shouldn't even be in the squad, absolute hack.
Excellent toss to win, I think that could prove decisive plus we've shored up our pace and our attack looks much superior to some of their pie chuckers.
Time for Warner to make a big score on a perfect pitch in hot conditions which will test the bowlers.
Does that mean White will be released to play for Victoria tomorrow? He's already in NSW and the game is at ANZ stadium.
Surely they have to let him?

Disapointing to see Hilf dropped, but hopefully as others have said they are rotating the bowlers and Bracken or Hauritz will miss the next game, and Hilf will come back in.
Otherwise. What the hell would he have to do to keep his place in the side?
Ricky has won the toss and we will bat.
Given that South Africa prefer to chase, they could just about do away with the toss for the remainder of the series.

Following on cricinfo so can't see him actually bat... IMO if he can do this 35%-50% of the time in ODI I would be happy.
A reputation for WHAM BAM quick starts... will have other teams psyched out about bowling to him.
Only concern is how he will fare on less friendly/bouncy wickets like in England and sub-continent.

Very interesting decision to take the powerplay so early, but i think its a good one as long as Warner stays in.
If we keep wickets in hand we should be able to accelerate the scoring later in the inning anyway, so might as well keep going now.
Plus we waste Steyn's overs and can go for it while the ball is still reasonably hard.

23 Jan 2009, 13:35
Good decision to take the power play with Warner and Marsh both settled in - both very good strikers of the ball.
Good on Warner too, should get a few critics off his back - hopefully he can ton up now.
Think the test team is still quite a few years down the track for him - could become very important to the side for the next decade, him and Marsh might become a very powerful opening combination.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnNO BALL!!
Brett Lee's not playing
Very good decision to take the powerplay now, when batting first..
Their best bowler Steyn, having just completed 3 or 4 overs, was forced to come back on again, for potentially three more.. Instead of "helping them" by calling a powerplan at end of innings when he normally bowls, we'vw forced their hand, and now it will have to be a loose nitini or botha bowling at the death.. Good forward thinking to help out batsmen later on!
Brett Lee's not playing
i agree, his front foot no-balls can get frustrating... I wonder if CA can petition ICC to allow for a 15cm "allowance" on these too...
... and if they don't, we'll call them racists for not changing the rules for a bollywood cricketer..
