View Full Version : Good Kiwi Music!?

Man, some good rock music coming out of New Zealand lately, in particular two bands who have caught my attention: The Datsuns and the D4.

The Datsuns are a more raw sounding band, half way between The Hives and The Vines i the rock/punk sound - not quite either but it nails it in the centre. Sounds great. Self titled album is out there, so give it a listen. They're just as good as any of the "saviours of rock", just without the hype; and with funny accents.

The D4 are a bit better known, with The Exit getting a bit of airplay and the video on Rage/Fly TV rotation. Still, not enough people like them. They rock, but not with a rawness of The Datsuns. Their sound is more polished and perfected, but it suits their style. I reckon they'll be a big thing - I already know plenty of fans and people recommending them already.

Finally, some quality coming out of New Zealand. They owe us since they released Bic Runga and gave us Richard bloody Wilkins.

Hitman see if you can get your hands on a Flying Nun(label) compilation from the early 90's.If you hunt around second hand CD shops you should find one pretty cheap. They had some great bands - The Bats,The Chills,Headless Chickens - to name but a few!:)

Headless Chickens - they had that song Cruise Control? Then disappeared?

I haven't quite forgiven the Kiwis for Dave Dobbyn. But then, they did give us Split Enz. :)

Kiwi Music peaked in the late 70's early 80's with Mi-Sex. Legends. Computer Games, Graffiti Crimes, People, It only hurts when I'm laughing, Love on the Telephone, Space Race are all Classics.

Headless Chickens were also pretty good, Gaskrankenstation and Donde Esta La Polo are excellent tunes.

Headless Chickens were great, really at the forefront of the electronica rock movement that was prevalent in the early 90s.
Other good New Zealand bands include... The Chills, Straitjacket Fits, Dance macabre, garageland, don't forget Pacifier are the latest kiwis to be labelled Australian.
A heap of good music was released in NZ in the early 80s which virtually allowed Split Enz and the Swingers among others to emerge. Bones Hillman, bass player in midnight oil, and Buster Stiggs, drums in The Models, were members of the Swingers.
So I think New zealand aren't as bad as everyone makes out. Oh yeah, as soon as they are good they become Australian don't they?
On NZ compilations, check out It's Bigger than Both Of us - NZ singles 1979-82. A double cD compile featuring the workaholic bands of that era. Really cool - most of the bands would be unheard of, but there are def. some great tracks.

further to that don't forget Supergroove who contributed one of the funkiest tunes of the mid90s - cant get enough.

Did he have a 2nd song or was Slice Of Heaven his only one ?

He is a veteran of the music scene. He was in a band (DD Smash)before Slice of Heaven and has stacks of albums.

Dave Dobbyn is quite a talented guy and his early stuff with DD Smash was pretty good. There has been a stack of other Kiwi bands who came on over but didn't cut it. Does anyone remember one called "Hello Sailor" ?? Around the same time as when Dragon arrived and in the same vein. I really liked them but they were crushed in the rush by Dragon.

What about Sharon O'Neill ?? Jenny Morris ??

They weren't good either :p

I think only the Hunter brothers were Kiwis, more of a trans-Tasman band like Crowded House.

Dave Dobbyn actually played guitar for Sharon O'Neill for a while. Jenny Morris was one of my favourites. :)

Jenny Morris put out a great album, called "Animal Magic", with a band, named QED, back in 1984.

QED were not a patch on the great Australian Band from the same era, Do Re Mi. Deborah Conway was one seriously angry songwriter in those days!

Used to go and see Mother Goose live quite regularly at some of the well known pub gigs in Melbourne. Geez, did they put on a stage show, you certainly got your moneys worth !!

Yes I've seen them too. Seriously funny and surprisingly good.

(I reckon Machine Gun Fellatio have borrowed a bit from their caberet style of performance).

I actually think the Kiwi's almost try and hide their good bands so that Australia can't adopt them as our own...haha :D

Yeah I got there album back then, wonder what happened to them, never had heard of them since?

OMC, the hip-hop trio with the song How bizarre weren't too bad, that song anyway. Hitters, I didn't mind that hit of Bic Runga's from a few years back.

I'll take it SF. I don't mind it too much. Being from NSW, it's an exotic beer here in SA.
