View Full Version : Preseason draft
Can someone please illuminate me how the draft picks in this draft (not the National draft) are determined.
I can't find anything on the useless AFL site.

I think it goes like this.
Priority picks are given to those clubs who win less than 5 games.
For season 2002 this was Carlton. The priority picks are the first picks in the draft. So carlton gets Pick 1.
Thereafter the picks are given in order of finishing position on the ladder after the finals.
Thus carlton gets Pick 2 and b Lions get Pick 17. For subsequent picks for each team just add 16 to the previous round pick. Thus Carltons second round pick is 18 and Lions is 33.
I stand to be corrected of course.

I'm showing my ignorance here but along the same vein, what is the minimum salary a club has to pay a player picked up in the draft?
Does this vary according to whether it is a delisted player (with prior playing experience) or a young guy straight out of draft camp?
I imagine that once a player is picked up in the draft, the drafting club can offer a contract at so much per year(or a total $ amount for a number of years)........subject of course to some "minimum" amount for the first year.
Am i right?

My understanding of it is that it is simply for uncontracted players, who nominate their price and contract details (or this may simply be optional, not sure).
I think picks are in reverse ladder order, however, if teams lodge full lists prior to this draft, they become ineligible, and some teams simply don't participate, due to salary cap constraints.
Consequently, if 15 clubs don't participate, and one club wants three picks, it would get picks 1,2,3. I think thats how it works!
