I think England should have tried the following theory in playing Australia...
Instead of stating that they were ready for the sledging etc etc and saying they were going to take it right up to the Australians, they should have tried agreeing with the Australians. Whether in the media or on the field.
The biggest danger to the Australians is their own complacency. If they start to become to relaxed and think it will be too easy then England might be able to take advantage of that.
Sledging the Australians will only make them concerntrate harder and prove harder to overcome. However I think if instead of sledging them if England were to compliment them excessively to inflate the Australian players egos then there is a chance the Australians wouldn't concerntrate as hard and think it will all just fall into place.
Complimenting would involve agreeing entirely with whatever the Australians say in the media, even if it is putting your own team down (make the team know of the strategy so they wont take it to heart). Then when in the field heavily compliment the Australians on their shots, or their fielding and bowling etc.
I really believe this sort of strategy could make the Australians relax more and disrupt them more.
BTW I am definitely an Australian and love seeing them do well, but I am just throwing this out there as I want to see a competitive series.
