I just wanted to get peoples thoughts on Channel 9s promos for the Australian version of this show?

To me it seems that they have picked the stupidest contestants in Australia and put them in so everyone can laugh at them.

It looks totally pathetic and they are ruining a reasonable show to me. They could have picked athletes who would actually have a chance...yet they have picked total weirdos.

I had strong hopes for it but after seeing the promos i really hope it fails.

What are other peoples thoughts?

-Ben

That would be your first mistake.

I love Wipeout but a big part of it is the fact Americans are making fools of themselves. Americans are funny to laugh at, Aussies are just cringeworthy. I don't think it will be as amusing - even if Brayshaw gets some good lines, the two American commentators make the show so it will be very hard to come close to it.

I would definitely watch at least 5 minutes of an It's A Knockout revival.

Can't say I will even bother to watch any minutes for this.

Just another head-scratchingly bad decision.

The America version is mildly amusing at best so I imagine this Australian version will be annoying if it's stacked with yobbos and bogans as the commercials seem to imply.

Fun fact: The Australian version, like all the non-American versions, was filmed in Argentina.

i read a review somewhere (TV Tonight website?) about Wipeout Australia. Apparently most people who viewed it were expecting it to be completely different and not as good as the American version - apparently that's all completely wrong and it's just as good as the american version.

that's only coming off the review i read of course.

I'm a huge fan of the american version, so i have high hopes for this one, and i'm not going to let anything get in the way of that just yet...i'll reserve any judgment until i see it

how could anyone even remotely enjoy more than 1 or 2 episodes of the US one? It was the same stuff, over and over! Now we get more over and over but with all new aussie accents!

i reckon there will be lots of athletes in it but for the ads there just showing the weirdos coz they think thatll get more people to watch it

Anyone else think that doing the wipeout course looks like a bit of fun tho?

The commentary is the key. The US blokes nail it.

I just hope it's not another Hole in the Wall type commentary which was pathetic.

Is Josh Lawson on it? That would be good.

Ultimately you need 2 blokes with decent chemistry that can make the mundane interesting or at least mildly amusing.

James Brayshaw and Josh Lawson are the commentators

The forced over the top laughter as he commentates from Brayshaw will kill the show.

The sharp writing of the commentary for the American version is what makes the show. The delivery is also perfect, very dry and witty.

Brayshaw is the most overrated media presenter in the country, he alone will ruin this show. That is assuming the commentary is properly written, which I highly doubt also.

True. In that sense it's like Eurovision - that's only watchable because of Terry Wogan. Remember when SBS tried to do that with Effie? (aaargh! I thought those memory cells were dead!)

When people on screen are making d**&^heads of themselves, all you need is a bit of dead-pan commentary to top it off.

As for the 'competition' itself - 'Look mum - I'm on the TV!!'.

Is JB desperate for money or what?

seriously the worst looking program so far for 09. Another "monster house" methinks.

Got bored of the American version pretty quickly and I dont like the look of this one bit

I reckon it will be a good show not because it will be quality TV but because their are enough people around who watch this type of TV and I reckon it is a better format than Hole In The Wall and other similar shows that haven't made it.

Josh Lawson should give good commentary and as long as their are a few decent competitors and not just the types they are advertising it could be remotely watchable if nothing else is on TV.

I'm with Eagle - not bad. I still maintain the stupid Americans and the American commentators make the show so funny. The Aussies are doing the same thing but it is just not as funny for some reason.

US idiots = Oz idiots

The US commentators are funnier though JB & JL are doing a good job..

I honestly believe they just redirected the line for Big Brother auditions to auditions for this show. Shame cause I liked the US edition.

Woeful compared to the US version. Two guys who aren't funny and a chick that isn't a quarter as good as the US one.

And is it my imagination or were they cheapskates and didn't fill the mudpool at the sucker punch wall even half what the US one does? And I'm sure the big balls are smaller (take that however you will!).

It's filmed on the same course as the US version

I thought the hosts were fine, the thing that really irked me was the fact that each contestant had a nickname, the Samurai the Waterboy, The Ponyboy etc. I don't remember this being the case in the US version, or am I forgetting it?

Pretty sure most if not all the contestants in the final 12 in the US version had nicknames.

The US series is filmed in California, the Australian series is filmed in Argentina.

Incidentally, all the non-American series are filmed (according to Wikipedia) in Argentina. And guess who the UK series commentator is! :p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00yTIg1bTMk

I found it incredibly boring, and the constant use of nicknames did my head in (especially the soundbite used ad-infinitum for 'Cougar').

I quite enjoyed the US version, but the Australian one was just a little too 'tryhard' for me.
Australians aren't suited to the over the top reactions required from contestants to make the show interesting.

Mr Eagle

Pretty sure most if not all the contestants in the final 12 in the US version had nicknames.

No, I noticed the 'overnicknaming' too. I think about half of the twelve get noticed/nicknamed during the first run (US version) and a few more crop up during the later events if they're going to survive.

Watching tonight - much better episode but I agree with the nicknames. They are ood but they commentators over use them - the Yanks seem to do it so it is not so repetitive.

SunKing
17 Feb 2009, 18:43
It must be a prerequisite to be NQR to be on this show:)

And yeh the nicknames are overdone..not sure the yanks had one for every single contestant..only one i remember was 'extreme kiwi':D

gotta say I thought they'd stuff up what makes the U.S show a great bit of light hearted fun.

But they really have done it right. The commentary is in the right mode.

amaizing I'll say for the first time in a while :thumbsu: Ch 9.

It is getting better and better IMO. Brayshaw and Lawson are a lot better than I thought they'd be. The girl is a looker, but isn't a touch on the American in personality.

The commentary make the show funny not the competitors. The bumps and on screen action is the same in every show but the commentators are hilarious.

It's a combination of both. The writing/delivery is superb but you also get lots of yuks from the loony competitors.
