Your first thoughts at the words 1997 Grand Final...was it
the Crows or the league in WA or SA that you thought of ?

If you walked into a pub in Adelaide or Perth and said Hey anyone remember the 93 G.F ? would every person to a man think you were talking about an AFL game or the Grand Final played in Perth or Adelaide..

Now... if you did the same in 1986 and said anyone remember the 81 G.F..would anyone in SA or WA have thought about a Victorian suburban league ( VFL, the AFL anrecedent) G.F. ???

First thing I thought of was Port v Norwood, but only because of where this post is. If you mentioned it in person I'd probably think of the AFL Grand Final only because of the significance of being the Crows first premiership. Any other year and I would think SANFL straight away, but that's just because of where my first loyalty lays.

I think there is no doubt that if you said "remember '81" in 1986, everyone in Adelaide would assume you were talking about Port d. Glenelg (Claremont d. South in WA). Prior to about then, the VFL hardly rated a mention on TV, the Big Replay on Channel 7 was SANFL.I think the VFL Winners was on ABC by then but mostly all we knew about VFL results was a brief mention of the scores/best players in the sports column of the Sunday Mail or Monday's Advertiser/News, there were certainly no write ups of the VFL games.

BTW, If you mentioned 1998, I'd probably get grumpy. :p

Thats why I steered clear !

I was driving in the back blocks of Northern NSW/ Qld Border, with my kids on Holiday with my Mobile phone connected to someone in Adelaide that left their phone by the TV..we listened to the last 1/4 and a half...by mobile phone...

If you were to say the words '1997 Grand Final' to me the first thing that would come to my hea dwould be seeing Port lose its first grand final since i began supporting them.

Well if you didnt put "Attn WA and SA people" and it wasnt the regional board I probably would have thought of the Crows.
But as it is I assumed you might be talking about a local game of some sort.

These are the first things that would enter my mind if I were asked these questions in the given cicumstances. Pre-Eagles, the WAFL was more important to the average sandgroper.

If you asked me 'walking down the street" and not on a regional board I would have said Crows v St Kilda. Because of where you posted I instantly thought Norwood v Port and South v East Fremantle.
Not that I mind watching a video of the 97 AFL grand final from time to time.I just a "bit" of a fan of that Jarman chap.
If you asked me about the 97 ELIMINATION final (anywhere) that's a different story;)
If you asked me about the 81 Grannie I think of "another" Port premiership. By the way there was no Grand Final in 1986!

To be fair youngster I think Macca19 is too young to remember 1984 and certainly too young to remember 1976!!!

In all honesty, I expected this thread to be about the Norwood defeat of Port in that year.

Probably a reasonable assumption, given that the post was made by a South Australian on a Regional Leagues board, wouldn't you say?

Want some lessons from a 17 year umpiring veteran, Uncle Steve?? :D

Seriously, even in here I would have said Adelaide/St.Kilda, but I would have followed it with Ainslie/Tuggeranong because I was living in Canberra at the time. And then West Canberra/Marist because that was the grand final that I umpired (Under 18's).

It's a good point, the subject matter of this thread.

I can remember the "Derby Grand Final" in 1997 in WA but would have to check to see who was in the AFL GF for that year.
But thats the way I follow footy, I take more interest in lower levels than AFL.

I would have asked, "what sport?" It's not only footy who has grand finals.

My first thought is of the Crows and watching the game at the Hackney Hotel (of all places).

In 86, my first recollection of the 81 GF would have been Port Adelaide winning again. But also of that Wayne Harmes incident in the VFL GF where he knocked the ball back from the boundary - a quite famous incident.

The Harmes incident was in the 1979 Grand Final. He won the inaugural Norm Smith medal in that game. In 1981 Collingwood led by 21 points at the 28 minute mark of the third quarter. Carlton scored 2 goals in the last couple of minutes and then completely outplayed Collingwood in the last quarter to win by about 3 goals. I think that Bruce Doull won the Norm Smith medal in that game.

The 1981 SANFL Grand Final was famous for the David Granger - Twiggy Caldwell incident.

Damn! I knew I'd get that wrong. And I was going to mention Grave Danger, but thought the Twiggy Caldwell incident was the 82 Prelim. That must have been when he decked Cornes.

Geez, time is marching on and I've killed too many brain cells....

Agh yes I remember it well,Derby(yesDerby not Darby)tween the real Fremantle side South Fremantle and those from the other other side of Fremantle.
The other mob were celebrating their 100th year in the comp and we kicked their asses. We came from the clouds to swamp them.
The South Freo rooms pumped out the chorus of HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.
What a joyous day it was.
Yes well do I remember 1997.
Before all you Aquarium residers give me a serve about our 100th year and being beaten,at least it wasn't by you mob but by the Garlic Munchers. To the uninitiated thats West Perth.
Yes I remember 1997 very well.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE IMPOSTERS HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

Off the top of my head

AFL GFs:
2002: Brisbane d Collingwood
2001: Brisbane d Essendon
2000: Essendon d Melbourne
1999: North d Carlton (?)
1998: Adelaide d North (?)
1997: Adelaide d St Kilda (?)

Now let's see how I go with WAFL GFs:
2002: East Perth d West Perth
2001: East Perth d ...ummmm....
2000: East Perth d ...uhhhhh...
1999: ...Hmmmmm...

Does that answer your question? :)
