From this weeks 'Inside Football', the 2002 Premiership Team and how they ended up as Lions.

Headland - Pick 1 - National Draft
Johnson - Merger
Voss - local zone selection
McRae - Pick 22 - Pre-season Draft
B Scott - traded by Hawthorn
Power - Pick 5 - National Draft
Notting - Pick 26 - National Draft
Aschroft - local zone selection
Lynch - traded by Fitzroy
Akermanis - local zone selection
Pike - Pick 33 - National Draft
Michael - traded by Collingwood
Brown - Pick 30 - National Draft
Black - Pick 31 - National Draft
C Scott - Pick 12 - National Draft
Leppitsch - Pick 4 - National Draft
Keating - local zone selection
Hart - Pick 33 National Draft
White - local zone selection
Shattock - Pick 45 - National Draft
McDonald - Pick 73 - National Draft
Lappin - Pick 2 - National Draft

and the backlash from that list has already started the whingers up and running again.

With Voss, Ashcroft, Akermanis, Keating and White all listed as 'local zone selections', the bleating about 'proof' that no salary cap conession is needed and the number of home grown players on the list already blah blah blah......

What people forget is that it was a 'zone selection' not a 'priority pick' and wasn't there a similar situation for most clubs back then too? (I'm sure someone here would know what recruiting tactics were around back then) Even if there wasn't, this is the Brisbane Bears we are talking about, in the late 80's/early 90's, something had to be done to get players to play with them, it wasn't exactly the most professional team around.

Interesting to see from that list tho, that Headland, Brown and Shattock would be the only ones eligible under the current 10% Salary Cap allowance.

This may be off the theme a little, but I would suggest that much of the strength of Brisbanes list comes from draft selections under the guidance of Scotty Clayton. A very astute judge and recruiter, he is now doing the same at the Bulldogs.

I hope he still has job/club in 2 years.

Good work Danni.

Your list demonstrates/backs up what I have always believed.

How you judge your picks is more important than how "high" the pick is ranked at the time.

There are only four "top ten" draft selections in that list with all the rest "ranked" 22 (McRae) or lower.

It also shows that those who bleat and complain about the Lions having "bought" their premierships are talking through their collective anal passages.
