RIP Darcy.

Its a disgrace that an event like this has to happen for the government to act and finally act on the idea of installing safely barriers on the Westgate. After years of suicides it should have been done earlier. Many lives lost:(

RIP Darcy Freeman

It's an absolute tragedy that this girl has died in such terrible circumstances.

However, I think we've got to be very careful with our reaction to her father. This man is clearly suffering from a very serious psychological disorder, and the likelihood that what happened was a planned act is very low.

I'd be almost certain that Darcy was a victim of her father's insanity rather than her father's intent, and I think the media's lack of understanding of that is very disappointing.

It's a terrible loss of life, and I think we should look at it from that angle, as well as it being a reminder of the terrible impact of mental illness; a form of illness that so many refuse to acknowledge.

Looking at it from GoDons point of view. It seems like the system we have (for mental illnesses) has failed.

Spot on Skeeta. The mental health system in Australia has to be continually improved. As GoDons alluded to in the above post, mental illnesses are often not perceived as being as legitimate as physical illnesses. There is a stigma attached to mental illness that makes it very difficult for sufferers to seek help. Once society is able to recognise the legitimcay of mental illness and diospose of the associated stigma, then mental illness can be more effectively managed both for the individual and for society at large.

It's just tragic. I can't imagine what it's like for the girl's family.

I still can't believe this actually happened. It's so sad and horrible. I feel sick inside every time I hear anything about it. It's something that you never want to hear about in your lifetime.

You cant help but feel shocked and devastated that something like this could occur.

And just to add: my two cousins go to the same school as where the girl and her brother go to. And one of those cousins is in the same class as the girl's brother.
And that just makes me feel even more sick.
