View Full Version : BF's Ashes Player of the Season Award.

Hey all, I've noticed that on a number of team boards the respective supporters ran a quasi "best and fairest" competition over the course of the footy season, tallying votes after each game and deciding their own best player for the season.

I thought that, for a bit of fun, we could do a similar thing with the Ashes test series.

I suggest that instead of a 3 vote system the cricket award should be on a 5 vote basis, considering that overall I reckon cricket match results rest can rest more on individual performances than football can.

So, whaddaya think?

I'll start off proceedings with my votes from the first test -

5 - Hayden (Aust) (197 & 103 + 4 catches)
4 - McGrath (Aust) (4/87 & 4/36)
3 - Ponting (Aust) (123 & 3 + 4 catches)
2 - Warne (Aust) (1/87 & 3/29 + 57)
1 - Butcher (Eng) (54 & 40 + 1 catch)

5 - Hayden
4 - McGrath
3 - Giles
2 - Ponting
1 - Caddick

Theres mine. I would suggest that we make it so only people who vote in the first test vote in the second test otherwise it will bias the final vote count in favour of players who perform well in a test and have more people vote in that test if you get what i mean.

Next Test I'm going to have to do this without looking at what other people have voted, but here goes:

5 Hayden (no brainer)
4 McGrath (chief destroyer)
3 Ponting (important first innings knock)
2 Crawley (really helped England get back into the match on day two, second innings duck was not his fault iirc)
1 Trescothick (likewise, perhaps moreso than Crawley but dropped him to one vote after he got out cheaply in the second innings)

Others to miss out:
Gillespie who turned things back in Australia's favour on Day 3, most unluckly to miss out.
Butcher who missed out because he didn't go on with it in the first innings and in the second innings his effort was too little too late.
Hussain should've gone on with it in the first innings.
Giles took six wickets but the only one to come at an important time was Ponting's.
Caddick took some important wickets but bowled plenty of junk as well.
Warne cameo innings but didn't do enough with the ball in the first innings.
Gilchrist cameo second innings but his keeping was poor.
Martyn useful second innings knock but they were fairly cheap runs.

5 - Hayden (lots of runs)
4 - Ponting (Solid contribution)
3 - McGrath (8 wickets)
2 - Giles (6 in a losing side, and no-one expected anything from him).
1 - Warne (contributed with bat and ball)

3 - Giles
2 - McGrath
1 - Warne

We have a comp here at work amoungst a couple of the guys whereby everyone picks 4 players and they all get points as follows:

1 run = 1 point
Assisted wicket = 15 points
Unassisted wicket = 25 points
Catch = 10 points
100+ = 20 points
200+ = 50 points
300+ = 100 points
Duck = -10 points
5 Wickets = 20 points
10 wickets = 50 points
Man of Match = 50 points

Going on this, the above were the top 5 point scores for the test...

Is a caught and bowled worth 25 or 35?

MY VOTES:

5. Matthew Hayden
4. Glenn McGrath
3. Ricky Ponting
2. Jason Gillespie
1. Ashley Giles

Butcher, Hussain and Trescothick all failed to go on with their innings in England's first dig when they really needed at least one of them to make a big hundred, therefore I can't possibly give them votes. Giles was England's best bowler by far. Caddick was too short in my opinion and got punished by Hayden and Ponting.

The Aussie players picked themselves really. :)

I think Giles' figures during this match flattered him significantly. Caddick certainly bowled poorly on the first day but Giles wasn't much better and the only wicket he got was an extremely lucky one. The other 6 wickets he got were mainly 'junk time' wickets - tailenders and when Australia was looking for quick runs.

Caddick was the one who begun England's fightback with his excellent spell on the second day, and while he didn't bowl well overall in the second innings, he got two key wickets in his opening spell and gave England an opportunity.... something they failed to take.

ok, just wasn't sure whether or not the catch itself is another 10 points on top of that.

Maybe we need a cut off day to tally the votes by and a list of the vote getters. Also I agree with the idea of having to vote in the first test so the votes aren't skewed.

Who is going to keep the tally?

I can't belive i'm the only person giving votes to all Aussies. I'm not being one-eyed but the English really don't deserve anything. Losing by 300+ runs within four days in the equivilent of losing an AFL game by 15 goals.
