Pre-season training resumes in a couple of days time, so I thought I would give you an insight as to what I have been up to during my off-season break.
Like most of my teammates I ventured up to Cairns to enjoy a few days unwinding and enjoying some good times with the boys. Scott Welsh and Ian Perrie were my roommates for the trip, and I would not have liked to be the cleaning people at the hotel as our room……..well let’s just say that was never a tidy room.
Following on from Cairns, Scott Welsh, Rhett Biglands and Robert Shirley and myself hired a car and drove down to Airlie Beach where we stayed for seven nights before heading over to Hamilton Island for a two-night stay. While on Hamilton Island we hired a 40-foot yacht and sailed out to Whitehaven Beach where we spent the day lazing on the beach and in the water. After a few days with the team up in Cairns it was great to be able to chill out for a while and really relax.
After arriving back in Airlie Beach we then continued our little safari down the Queensland Coast and our next stop was Noosa where we spent another two nights before making our way to the Gold Coast for the Indy Car race. I am a big fan of motor racing and to see the race live was a buzz. It was a pity that the actual race took place in pouring rain, but the experience of Indy weekend on the Gold Coast was great.
We then ventured down to Byron Bay in New South Wales for our last couple of nights of our trip, which was a nice way to finish the holiday. We had a great time on the road and saw some of Australia’s best coastline along the way as well as sharing plenty of laughs and a few soothing beers as well.
Being a keen punter, the Melbourne Spring Carnival is a time of year that always I look forward to and this year was no exception. I tipped Northerly for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate and thought that this may be the year that I win big. I headed over to Melbourne and went to Derby Day and Melbourne Cup Day and although my tips let me down and I gave back all the money I had previously won, I still had a ball.
Unfortunately with the traveling I have done over the break, I haven’t had the chance to return to my home town of Hayfield (I am sure the locals are pleased I haven’t been back yet), but I will certainly head back with the next couple of weeks to catch with family and friends.
For me the off-season break is the ideal chance for me to rest my body and re-charge the batteries for next season. Center-half forward can sometimes be a punishing position to play as you have opponents constantly jumping into you, and your body gets bashed about a bit, so I enjoy the break to let my body rest.
I am looking forward to pre-season training, catching up with all the boys and preparing ourselves for a crack at the premiership next year.
Mark Stevens.
Sounds like my boy had a good time :) It is good to hear what the boys have been up too in the off season. Mind you I could have given him the good tip for the Melbourne Cup - I tipped the winner! Go Media Puzzle! Matty Bode has also put his holiday thoughts on the Crows website!
