These are our 4 draft picks for Sunday week. I think that we will probably only use the first 2 draft picks for new blood unless someone sneaks through unexpectedly to #71. This is unlikely and I think that it will be used to redraft either Shirley or Skipworth who are both training with the club.
79 will almost certainly be saved for the pre-season draft and more than likely has been earmarked for James Begley to give a bit more depth to the midfield now that Johnson has gone.
Your thoughts?

Makes sense, macca. Interesting to see as what the club thinks what part area of the game we need most improvement in. Even with losing Johnson, our midfield is still our strongest aspect, in my opinion, as we still have others like Stenglien, Doughty etc who can step up in time to fill Johnson's space. Our forward line is so much stronger now with Carey and Burns, so maybe our picks could be used to give our backline/defence a boost?

The club has openly said it would like to get another tall in defence, and we all seem to think that Marsh is only just a backup ruckman, so these would seem to be the areas our 2 draft picks might be used on - if they are available for us to select.
If not just the best two available players will have to be it. I am optimistic about #36 as someone expected to go early always seems to fall through the cracks. #60 will be more of a gamble, but then again remember John**** - our 5th and best pick of 2 drafts back.

If there is a half decent ruckman around by the time we get to pick #36 we should pick them. Reckon we need another tall defender (who preferably could also play forward). S Bassett would be worth picking up as a later pick, as it would give us an immediate AFL player - someone who could back up his brother & Kenny, & give time for Rutten to develop (ie. give us some more depth). Do we need Begley, as I wouldn't rate him ahead of Doughty, Gallagher & Mattner? I don't really believe we need to add to our midfield, unless a potential gun has slipped through the cracks.

There've been reports that Begley has returned to SA and is looking to play for either us or Port. Maybe he's looking to play for us, but yeah, I think we need a backman more than a midfielder right now, though you can never have too many midfielders

Would he break into the Crows side? I doubt it. Better of getting some quality youngsters IMO.

l would like to see the crows go for a small flashy small forwrd who can be an excitement machean........like a macray from brisband.....or a steven milne type player.......because even if ronnie burnes has a good season.......he has only 2 years at most in him.......graham john**** will be placed in the midfield next season.....or be groomed to take that half back flank from Mark Bickley......we need a nother tall running defender......to take over from Nigel Smart unless Tson Stengline moves to a half back/back pocket flank to allow room in the midfield for a Brent Reilly.....but we have some good young key postion forwards and defenders now.......kenny mac....and nathan bock...and ben rutton(how old is he).....matty smith....so were in good stead......go the crows

From what I can gather Jacob Schuback could easily develop into that role. He is a huge kick and has a quick burst of speed. He had a good year for Westies, better than most interstate recruits in their first year over here. I expect him to get a few games next year. When we drafted him he was touted as a replacement for Vardy (although why we gave Vardy away I'll never know, especially in a 3 way for Daniel Schell).
In this draft I think we should go for Scott Bassett before Begley. We've got such low picks that we're not going to get any highly regarded players especially after our first pick. So I would be happy to get Bassett with any pick after our first one.

So I would be happy to get Bassett with any pick after our first one. I had no real problem with trading Vardy as he was stale at the Crows & needed to move on (ie. no guarantee he would have played good football for us). Hopefully the same situation for Ronnie Burns & he gets a new lease of life. However, I never liked us picking up Schell as IMO Freo won that trade. He would need to improve dramatically in 2003 (ala Kenny) to stay on out list. Agree that S Bassett should be picked before Begley, whi I don't reckon we need.
I still believe we neeed another ruckman. Three is not enough. Biglands, Clarke, Marsh - if 1 or 2 of these blokes get serious injuries we are stuffed. I know we have been lucky with injuries and our injury management has been good, but let's not tempt fate.
I don't want a repeat of 1999. Rehn and Marsh got injured, Pittman and Robran could not stay fit and we were relying on Herbert and Golding! Better to be safe than sorry.
So a ruckman (or 2 if poss - hello rookie list), a key defender and maybe a small forward. Speaking of small forwards, I have heard that we are keen on Adrian Wilson from Centrals (son of Wilbur). Thanks to the doggies fans on the regionals boards for giving us an update on Adrian's injury. Could be a bonus for us in some way, would a Vic club be willing to pick up a lad from interstate who is currently injured? Maybe not, they may leave him for one of the local clubs. Could be a bonus.

I think we need:
#36 - Ruckmen or KPP
#60 - One we didn't get from 36
#71 - Midfielder
#79 - Small crumbing forward

I agree with everyone that our first target should be a ruckman, but going by the mock drafts, that cupboard could be bare by pick 36. In that case we look like taking a KPP at #36, and maybe even another at #60 - either that or a crumbing forward
Heard John Reid on 5AA tonight who stated that Adelaide's usual custom is to save their last pick for the pre-season draft, and they will do the same unless something special sneaks through.
Also heard James Begley on 5AA tonight. I know that not all Crows fans rate him as highly as I do but Blighty had earmarked him as a possible future captain of St Kilda - good enough for me.
He made it clear that he virtually begged St Kilda to delist him to enable him to be with his family. He certainly sounded like he thinks he will be picked up by an SA club. I'm sure that either Port or us will pick him up. Cornesy thought the same.
Totally guessing of course but my guess is something along these lines
#36 Ruckman or KPP (KPP probably)
#60 KPP or crumbing forward
#71 James Begley
#79 Best available
If there is no ruckman worthy of drafting then it will have to be a rookie list project type ruckman, and hope to hell it is the right one
Why do we need a crumbing forward with Welsh, Burns and surplus midfielders?

Why Mcrae if Burns has only two years left, surely burns has more football left in him than Mcrae even with Ronnies hamstrings, and Welsh is younger than both.
Mcrae is in his 30's, better off taking a risk in a younger player who can learn under either Ronnie or Welsh.
