View Full Version : Promote Gilchrist to #5

I think Adam Gilchrist, the 2nd best batsman in the world, should be promoted to #5 as I think he is being a little wasted batting down at #7 at the moment. He already has a super average, but that average could get even higher if he were to bat at #5.
Thoughts?

I think we just leave the line up as is. There is such a thing as promoting someone to their own level of incompetence. If something isn't broken, why try to fix it?
Just leave the test team as it is.

Leave as is IMO. He's made heap of runs where he is batting at the moment, so I don't see the need to move him. If he gets moved then that'll throw some of the batting line up out, and could create some problems.
Strange as it sounds, I think Gilchrist is a bonus at number seven, rather than a batsman we depend upon. I think he's in the side for his keeping (although some argue there are better keepers but we won't go into that), and to score runs on top of that is an added bonus. If he goes through a slump with the bat, then there's not the problem there would be with a normal middle order bat. He'd still be doing his main job of keeping wicket.
And who then comes in at seven? Its far too low for a recognised batsman, it just wouldn't work. A fifth bowler would just give us an incredibly long tail. An allrounder may be the go but we don't need an allrounder in the Test side like we do in the one-day side.
Gilchrist is the perfect number seven. That position allows him to play his natural style - that refreshingly unselfish fast scoring way of his.
agree 100% with wat DaveW says. Gilly is an insurance policy at number 7 - we can always be assured that he's gonna score runs down there if the top fail.

The only reason for moving Gilchrist would be because the bowlers were struggling to bowl the opposition out and an extra bowler was needed.
That could happen sometime in the future, but not in this series.

Nothing more intimidating than a guy coming in at No.7 who averages more than 50 and likes to score as quick as possible

Agree with all the above comments. Logic says the 2nd best batsman in the world should be promoted, but he's doing so well at #7, so why change a winning formula?
