I am lucky enough to be home today and finally 9 is showing the Oscars live :thumbsu:
Just started. Hugh Jackman's opening number - very good but he was laughing at parts of it. He really looked reallly puffed out doing it too. All of the nominees are very close to the stage. Impressive so far.
i agree...they are close!
go adams! she looks fantastic!

Penelope Cruz wins best supporting actress.
I liked the introduction they did with the 5 former wins, even if it were time consuming.
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 10:49
Mickey Rourke - what was he thinking? An all white suit, he looks like he is going to the high roller club in a Las Vegas casino.
:thumbsd: Viola Davis should of won it.

23 Feb 2009, 10:56
Well that "Leaked Oscar Winners" thing is already wrong. They had Adams as the winner.

Well that "Leaked Oscar Winners" thing is already wrong. They had Adams as the winner.
And they got the screenplay wrong too -went to Milk.

Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 11:02
Well that was just... gay :p

It hasn't been too bad to be honest. It has hit a flat spot because of the awards they are giving out. I do like the montages they are doing.

Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 12:10
Great speech by his father - both his parents have spoken so well for such a big stage
AzzaBuck
23 Feb 2009, 12:12
Well done Heath, thoroughly deserved! Parents and sister spoke very well considering the occasion.
Bomber32
23 Feb 2009, 12:18
Very emotional stuff. The Ledger family spoke really well, I thought.
Ludwig van Bertstare
23 Feb 2009, 12:30
Well deserved Oscar for Heath.
Slumdog scooping it so far.
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:15
That was annoying - they are showing the montage of those who have passed on. It is one small screen showing it and they can't stay still on it. Either way too close or two far away that you couldn't ready the names.

Peter Boyle wins best director for Slumdog Millionaire
Can Slumdog win best picture? Up against some very good movies.
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:26
Best Actress is up - Nicole Kidman is one of the 5 stars who are reading the nominations.
oh god....nicole 'i can't move the muscles in my face anymore' kidman

I have to say the five nominees in the acting role and having 5 previous winners read them out and describe thier performance is really good.
Can Slumdog win best picture? Up against some very good movies.
i don't think it'll win...
think 2002....pianist won best director (polanski, not american)...pianist loses to chicago of all things.
2006.....brokeback won best director (lee), not american)....brokeback loses to crash, what the???
2009....slumdog wins best director (boyle), not american.....slumdog loses to milk
the academy likes to give it to their own....
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:32
And the winner is Kate Winslet............
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:32
This speech should be interesting!
and kate gets it....looks like the upset is gonna be in the best actor category
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:33
I love how the women are basically hyperventilating when they are making the speech!
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:34
I still think the upset could happen in the picture - don't write of Benjamin Button.
Rourke is a shoo-in isn't he?
..as well as best film of course
bringbackschwarter5
23 Feb 2009, 13:37
Heath Ledger? didn't even show up to collect the award, bloody arrogant if you ask me
I still think the upset could happen in the picture - don't write of Benjamin Button.
Rourke is a shoo-in isn't he?
not sure....do the academy want a winner that'll go up on stage and swear his butt off??
penn won't win....won too recently
pitt....just, no
jenkins and langella the dark horses
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:38
LOL at Michael Douglas - look at his tie!
richskee
23 Feb 2009, 13:38
When stiller did that pheonix stint, the guy who won that award seemed to have a go at him. Did anyone understand what he said?
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:43
Winner is Sean PENN!!!!!!!!!!!
Ludwig van Bertstare
23 Feb 2009, 13:43
Sean Penn wins the best actor!

23 Feb 2009, 13:43
Penn wins!
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:44
So there is the upset- I thought he was in with a shot, the second favourite is always a good chance.
just got odds of 65/1 on milk.....whacked 20 on, probably won't win but i wont miss 20 :P
Ludwig van Bertstare
23 Feb 2009, 13:53
Slumdog Millionaire wins best picture!!!
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:53
Best Picture goes to............Slumdog Millionarie
booooo.....god what a bad best picture winner
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 13:53

ZedCrow
23 Feb 2009, 13:55
booooo.....god what a bad best picture winner
Well deserved for mine...I loved it. Watched before the hype though.

SLUMDOG gets it Best Picture. :thumbsu:

23 Feb 2009, 13:57
Why on earth would Reese Witherspoon have been chosen to present the Best Director award?
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 14:00
Not a bad ceremony. 3 and a half hours - it really gets boring in the middle with the awards no one cares about.
Two surprises were Penn and Cruz getting up.
Hugh Jackman - did a great job but besides the two dance numbers, he was barely sighted.
Penn was a bit of a suprise. Slumdog not at all/
Ludwig van Bertstare
23 Feb 2009, 14:10
Penn thoroughly deserved his award. Milk was an excellent film.
DonMania#5
23 Feb 2009, 14:15
I thought Mickey Rourke had it in the bag, Penn was a surprise.
Slumdog Millionaire was obvious..
really you could toss a coin between Penn & Rourke. Both great performances and equally deserving of the Oscar. Penn had the current politics in America with the Prop 8 vote and the Gay equal rights movement to help give his role a push. That would have influenced the Academy somewhat.
Kate Winslet - thoroughly deserved
Slumdog - meh!
Penelope Cruz - I thought she was excellent in Vicki Christina Barcelona so I am not unhappy
Heath Ledger - finally beat Phillip Seymour Hoffman out. RIP Very touching with his parents accepting on heaths behalf.
Overall I liked how they did that past winners coming out and speaking to each nominee. Good idea. Hugh did a bang up up job but I didn't understand that "Fake Australian accent" jibe at Steven Spielberg?
I won $2 as I bet Jerry Lewis would pull a stupid face and he did...Jer-ree, Jer-ree, Jer-ree!
Both Penn and Rourke would have been worthy winner. I thought Penn was amazing in Milk.
Personally, I love Slumdog Millionaire so I was glad to see it win and especially Danny Boyle winning Best Director.
Even though he was never going to win it- Langella was incredible as Nixon.
Personally, whilst I enjoyed Slumdog- I didn't think it was a "best picture" winner- over films like Milk. The movie had a nice (sentimental) aspect toward it- but it wasn't exactly groundbreaking cinema, especially in comparison to some of the past winners.
if 'there will be blood' was this year it would've won against that competitiion
SunKing
23 Feb 2009, 15:20
shakespeare in love winning
And that is not nearly as bad as the horrible Gwyneth Paltrow beating Cate Blanchett for best actress.
Mr Magoo
23 Feb 2009, 15:58
I only caught bits & pieces of it on the net. Mickey Rourke looked like he was dressed to go to Vegas :D. As for the awards, Sean Penn thoroughly deserved to win it (as much as Mickey did) & gave a very humble acceptance speech. He's a very gifted actor that's for sure. Seeing Rourke miss out reminded me so much of when Samuel L Jackson missed out for his role as Jules in pulp fiction.
Slumdog winning so many awards.... well after watching slumdog a second time recently, i think while it was an enjoyable film (the first time) it is very over hyped/rated. It reminds me of when Life is Beautiful won a couple of awards except that movie is so much better than slumdog.
Bombers_Forever
23 Feb 2009, 16:34
Yeah, Rourke looked like he had just turned up to the ceremony late after spending the night at Vegas!
And that is not nearly as bad as the horrible Gwyneth Paltrow beating Cate Blanchett for best actress.
don't get me started on that ....yep, was a shocker that year :)

well yeah, he played a gay Jew, pretty much covers all the bases in Hollywood. :D

23 Feb 2009, 20:17
Yeah, Rourke looked like he had just turned up to the ceremony late after spending the night at Vegas!
Mickey Rourke's old enough that he doesn't have to pretend not to care when he doesn't win. He can wear what he wants and look pissed off.
it was pretty obvious he wouldn;t win, after his speech at the globes. Didn't think penn would win though

I wondered what 9 would edit out - Martin/Fey and Stiller were the funniest parts. For all those who stayed up for the replay, you should have recorded the live version and then skip ahead that way!
I honestly couldn't see what they would take out (besides the ads)
